Norma Jensen passed away
on Wednesday, November
12, 2014 at the age of 90
years.
Snooky loved walks
and rides into the west
country close to the nature
that she loved as her mom
and grandmother did before
her. She enjoyed picnics, family
gatherings, traveling and a day at the casino.
Snooky cross-stitched, crocheted, and pettipointed for her children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Everyone enjoyed her
homemade jam from berries picked. Norma
volunteered at the Olds Hospital Tuck Shop
and was a member of the Royal Purple.
Snooky is survived by her six children,
Don (Betty) Kilpatrick, Sherry Kjorsvik,
Marilyn Donovan, Vicki Kilpatrick, Jim
(Joanne) Kilpatrick and Janis (Bert) Berkley;
daughter-in-law Marion Kilpatrick; thirteen
grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren
and numerous nieces and nephews. She
was predeceased by her first husband Vic
Kilpatrick; second husband Einar Jensen; son
Roger Kilpatrick; granddaughter Karen Hindes;
sons-in-law Allan Kjorsvik and Alec Donovan;
two sisters Illa (George) Lowen and Francy
(Ray) Helm and by her parents Hilland Miller
and Daisy Pedersen.
A gathering will be held at Royal Canadian
Legion Branch 105 (Olds, Alberta) on Friday,
November 21, 2014 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00

Born and raised in Calgary,
Bryan always had a dog
by his side. Growing up
in Canyon Meadows,
he found his other best
friend, Jay Westman.
From their early start
together with paper routes,
cutting grass, gas jockey
at the neighbourhood Shell
station, Bryan and Jay were a team that was
never broken. Bryan was the very proud first
employee of Jayman Homes, working by his
dear friend’s side for 30 years.
All of Bryan’s friends and family knew that
if you had a project to build, a car to fix, or a
new deck to build, Bryan was the “I’ll show
you how guy”, working by your side teaching
what he knew. Clara, his wife of 10 years,
recently commented that they would give
each other new decks or a new project to build
for their anniversary gifts. Even in his last
months, Bryan made sure that Clara had all
the womanly tools and equipment to maintain
their happy place, their home, (recently
referred to as a “Disney Frontier land”), in the
Garrington area west of Bowden.
In the winter, Bryan and Clara travelled south
in their motorhome, with their dogs by their
side to Pine, Arizona, where they spent time
with his Arizona family, Kathy and Roy. Of
course, there were more projects there too, and
a new deck to build!
In the past two years, Bryan achieved all
his wishes. He had all his children on an
unforgetable family legacy cruise. He
completed his dream cabins at his home for his
and Clara’s children, with the help of family
and some very kind neighbours. He travelled
to places he wanted to see and he leaves us a
content and happy man.
Bryan was a loyal friend, a helpful neighbour,
a loving and giving husband, father, stepfather,
brother, and uncle. He leaves behind his wife,
Clara; his sons, Ryan and Devan; Clara’s
children, Colin and Adelle; and his daughterin-law, Jami. He also leaves behind his
brother, Todd, as well as Todd’s wife, Wanda,
and children: Meagan, Lauren, and Luke.
Also, his brother, Guy, and neice, Avalon.
Bryan also leaves behind his neice, Tiffany,
whom he always considered one of his own.
Bryan will be missed and loved from here to
the moon!
Donations can be made in Bryan’s honour to

Dodd, Ruth
Early in the morning of
November
15, 2014
Ruth Dodd passed away
peacefully at her home in
Olds at the age of 99 years.
She was predeceased by
husband, Earl, eldest son,
Stanley and daughter-inlaw, Angelina. Ruth was born
on March 26, 1915 to Sophia and Andrew Aune
at Anthill near Morrin, Alberta. She was the
middle child of eleven. She has two surviving
siblings, Doris and Gordon, both of Hines
Creek, Alberta
The end of life begins a memory, a memory
that lasts forever. Her children Dorothy, Twyla
(Neil), Burdette (Merrill), Raymond (Beatrice),
Beverley (June), David, Marion (Al), and
Douglas (Vicki) will treasure all the memories.
Ruth delighted her grandchildren David (Sheri
Jean), James (Kendis), Stuart, Marsanne
(Andrew), Mark (Karen), Marla (David),
Joanne (Scott), Anita (Brad), Les (Pam), Keith
(Zita), Treena (Martin), Tanya (Colin), Teresa
(Ryan), Sheryl, Lindsay (Aaron) and Darin with
her Norwegian culinary, creative needlework
and many good games of Smear. Her great
grandchildren Meaghan (Brandon), Lesley,
Owen, Dylan, Taylor, Cassandra, Violet, Theo,
Grayson, Ronan, Michael, Steven, Maddox,
Sophia, Vanessa, Norah, Jesse, Mateus,
Madelena and one great great grandchild,
Emma, have many legacies to cherish.
Ruth enjoyed a full life. Her adventuresome
spirit and warm nature earned many friendships.
Curling was one of her favorites, (she curled
into her 80th year), she travelled far and wide
and lovingly made quilts for every member of
her family and for friends too. Her needlework
was outstanding. But her crowning glory was
her homemade buns (Granny Buns).
She always knew there was a miracle called
“friendship” that dwells within the heart and
you don’t know how it happened or when it gets
its start, but the happiness it brings you always
gives a special lift. Ruth always realized that
family and friendship are God’s most precious
gifts.
A celebration of Ruth’s life will be announced
at a later date.

Fred Notley (1919-2014)
Fred Notley of Olds passed
away peacefully at the Olds
Hospital, surrounded by
his family on November 13, 2014 at the age
of 95 years, after a rich
and rewarding life. He
is lovingly remembered
by his son Robert (Sharon)
of Olds, his daughter Leslie
(Gary) Jefferies, of Olds, 7 grandchildren,
10 great grandchildren, 1 sister Jean (Ralph)
Richards of Olds, and numerous extended
family and friends. Fred was predeceased
by his wife Faye, brothers Walter (Francis),
Horace (Helen), Mac (Alvina), sisters Maude
(Jim) Wolford and Peg (Bill) Grange. Born
on the family farm west of Olds on November 2, 1919, to Walter and Lila Notley, Fred
lived and worked most of his life on the family farm. During WW II Fred served with the
Royal Canadian Air Force. Fred married Faye
Roberts in 1950 and farmed for 3 years in the
Innis Lake district, before moving to Fairview,
Alberta to manage an International Harvester
machinery dealership with long time friend
Don Keen. After 3 years in Fairview, Fred and
Faye moved back to Olds, eventually taking
over the Notley family farm. In July of 2001,
the Notley Farm was presented with the Alberta Centennial Farm Award, an award that
Fred was immensely proud of. Fred and Faye
moved to town in 1988 but he continued to
help on the farm for many, many years. Fred
lost his beloved wife Faye in 1994. He was
able to stay in his home until his passing and
continue his active involvement in the Olds
Community. Fred loved to curl and was a lifetime member of the Olds Curling Club along
with his brother in law, Ralph Richards. He
was involved in many community activities;
Olds Co-op Association, United Farmers of
Alberta, Foothills Natural Gas Co-op, Royal
Canadian Legion Branch #105 (lifetime member), and Family Housing for Lower Income
Albertans. Fred was an active golfer and especially enjoyed his Seniors Golf League. He
also treasured his church home of St. John’s
Anglican Church where he was a loyal and active member. He was a person you wanted to
associate with, always willing to help others
by lending a hand with kindness and generosity. A memorial service was held November
17, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian
Legion Branch #105, Olds with Reverend
Joan Schellenberger officiating. Memorial
tributes may be made to a charity of choice.

Heinz & Louise Mertins
10 years have gone by so quickly. The sadness, the anger, the emptiness
in our hearts seemed to be endless. The tears would not stop, and the only
memories we could muster were those of our grief stricken goodbyes to our
parents. We held each other tight, like scared children in the dark. We were
imprisoned in our grief, and wondered if it would ever end. Moving forward
felt like a betrayal, and looking back would remind us only of our heart
breaking loss…….
We don’t know when or how, but a glimmer of light started shining for us,
slow but steady, (it pushed the dark and heavy shadow off our hearts). It
shone a light on the memories of our past and the possibilities of our
futures. Our journey was a hard and long one, it still continues but instead
of trepidation, we embrace it. This 10 year journey has taught us that our
parents did not leave, they did not abandon their children, and they are with
us always. Their whispers, and warm embrace is eternal, and their smiles
visit us during times of reflection, tokens of their presence surround our
daily lives, and when discovered bring us much joy! They have given us
strength through this overwhelming time, and reassured us. There is joy now,
instead of anger, we laugh instead of cry, we celebrate instead of grieve, we
are thankful instead of angry, we can go on now, without anger, resentment,
and sorrow.
We thank the many special people in our lives that have walked beside us
on our journey. We also thank the Albertan for publishing our very personal
words ,for the last 10 years. This venue has greatly helped to heal our hearts
and we thank you. We can move forward now, we will continue to honor and
memorialize our Mom and Dad, each of us in our own way………..
