NATIONALLY RECOGNISED TRAINING (NRT)
An accredited program of study that leads to vocational
qualifications and credentials that are recognised across Australia.
Only registered training organisations that meet government quality
standards can provide nationally recognised training. It includes
accredited courses and endorsed training package qualifications.
SKILL SETS
Skill sets are a plan of study made up of specific units of
competencies customised to meet an identified need or industry
outcome. Because the units are nationally recognised, you can gain
credit towards further study in the competencies achieved.
UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER (USI)
From 1 January 2015, all students participating in Nationally
Recognised Training in Australia will need to have a Unique
Student Identifier, or USI. This includes students completing an
apprenticeship or skill set, certificate or diploma course.
How to get a USI
It is free and easy for you to create your own USI online at
usi.gov.au. Your local Customer Service office can also provide
further information and assistance. If you already have your
USI you can enrol with TAFE WSI. (see page 10, step 4 for more
information).

CREDIT PATHWAYS – RECOGNITION OF PRIOR
LEARNING (RPL)
You may have previous learning and/or experience that can count
as credit towards your qualification. This means that you will not
have to study what you already know and you can complete your
studies faster.
You could qualify for a credit pathway if you have:
>>
completed relevant study with TAFE NSW or another registered
training provider
>>
completed relevant study in Australia
>>
relevant skills and qualifications from overseas
>>
relevant work and/or life experience.
THE ONLINE RECOGNITION E-KIT ON OUR WEBSITE IS
A GREAT TOOL TO HELP YOU ASSESS YOUR ELIGIBILITY
FOR CREDIT [RPL].
Apprenticeships and traineeships are the best way to combine training and
employment and they can lead to a nationally recognised qualification.
Many apprenticeship and traineeship qualifications are offered. You can be
a school leaver, or someone re-entering the workforce or simply wishing to
change careers.
Apprenticeships and traineeships are available in a variety of certificate
levels in more than 500 occupations across Australia, in traditional trades
and in a diverse range of emerging careers in most sectors of business and
industry.
No matter what industry you might be interested in, there is likely to be an
apprenticeship or traineeship to meet your needs.
For more information visit training.nsw.gov.au

wsi.tafensw.edu.au
TVET
The TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program
allows Year 11 and 12 students to study units from TAFE NSW courses as
part of their HSC.
TVET courses give you credit towards your HSC and towards an Australian
Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualification which is recognised by
employers, TAFE NSW and other vocational education and training
providers across Australia. TVET courses offer opportunities to gain
traineeships and apprenticeships whilst still attending school and post
school.

HOW TO GET STARTED AND ENROL
HOW TO GET STARTED AND ENROL
APPLYING AND ENROLLING FOR TAFE WSI COLLEGES OR OTEN:
We understand choosing the right course or qualification to match your desired career outcomes can be a tricky decision. We are here to help. At any time
during your course selection or enrolment process, you can call our Service Centre on 131 870 for assistance or email us at askwsi@tafensw.edu.au or pop
into us at 117 Henry Street Penrith. We are open Monday–Friday 8am–8pm and Saturdays 9am–1pm.
Alternatively you can visit any of our college locations. See page 35 for our college locations.
STEP 1
CHOOSE HOW AND WHAT YOU WANT TO STUDY:

STEP 2
IDENTIFY ANY RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) OR CREDITS
Do you think you may be eligible for credit or RPL for any previous study or experience? Our Service Centre staff or college Customer Service can help you
with RPL when you enrol. In most cases RPL can be processed after you have enrolled.
If you have previous study or work experience relevant to the course you are enrolling in, we encourage you to apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) when
you enrol. This means you could be exempted from studying some units in your course and you may get your qualification sooner.
The online Recognition e-Kit for Students is a great tool to help you assess your eligibility for RPL. Go to wsi.tafensw.edu.au/rpl or for OTEN go to
oten.tafensw.edu.au/rpl.
STEP 3
YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE A UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER TO ENROL
From 1 January 2015, all students participating in Nationally Recognised Training in Australia will need to have a Unique Student Identifier, or USI.
This includes students completing an apprenticeship or skill set, certificate or diploma course.
A USI gives you access to your online USI account and will contain all of your nationally recognised training records and results from 1 January 2015
onwards. Your results will be available in your USI account in 2016.
When applying for a job or enrolling in further study, you will often need to provide your training records and results. One of the main benefits of the
USI is that you will have easy access to your training records and results throughout your life.
How to get a USI
It is free and easy for you to create your own USI online at usi.gov.au. Your local Customer Service office can also provide further information and
assistance. If you already have your USI you can enrol with TAFE WSI.
