Bubbling Machines are allowed along seawalls and around individual boat dock
pilings at a distance not to exceed 12”. Any such machine must be electrically
driven to avoid noise. No water pumps or devices are permitted.
There are several good reasons for this regulation:
1
Safety- Ice that is weakened or open is a serious
potential safety hazard to families, neighbors, and all
members of the community that may wish to use the ice in
the wintertime. I am sure that no member of LMCC would
want to be even remotely connected with a winter accident
on Lake Mohawk.
2
3
Liability-
In addition to safety risks to persons
there is the potential for liability both for property own-
ers and the Country Club. An incident occurring after knowledge and warning could be difficult and costly to defend.
Lake Quality-
Our consultant from Princeton
Hydro advises us that we need a significant winter
period of ice with snow cover on it to help control weed pro-
duction in the following growing season. Areas of open ice
allow sunlight to reach the bottom of the lake through the
winter and promote weed growth.
4
Winter Recreation-
Many residents enjoy
cross-country skiing, ice boating, ice-skating, and
other winter activities on the lake. Areas of open ice interfere with the enjoyment and privileges of all LMCC residents.
The regulation mentions two methods that can be used to
protect the seawalls and structures in water lots. The permissible method is a bubbler system that introduces compressed air through small holes or slits in a submerged tube.
The release of the compressed air prevents ice formation in
the immediate vicinity of the perforations in the tubing. This
method is highly effective over the range of weather conditions experienced in this area as well as in far colder
regions. If used properly this method fully complies with all
requirements of the regulation.

Neighbor Helping Neighbor
Do You Know Them???
They live down the street...
have for a long time, so I have heard.
They are older, not outside much,
but always seem friendly, wave as
they walk by.
Do not want to intrude.
Wonder if they are ok on this
95 degree day? They must be,
or we would have heard,
wouldn’t we? Right?
Rarely see other cars in their
driveway or family, grandkids.
If they needed help, wouldn’t
they call someone?
Hire someone?
Notice that the grass is getting a
little long... leaves on the ground
until winter, snow on the driveway
for days
Maybe I should knock on their
door and say hello. Maybe?
I guess it is not really any of
my business, is it?
Wonder if they are home?
I gues I should ask around...

Sleepy Lagoon
Hello Sleepy Lagooners! Autumn is
in full swing. Please consider lending
a hand at Fall Beach Clean Up. See
the sandwich board for date and time,
usually 9 a.m. until the punch list is
complete. Other housekeeping items:
• Any items found in the shed or
fridge/freezer and not claimed at
Beach Clean Up will be donated or
trashed.
• If you have a kayak or two laying
on the lawn by the launching dock
or the lawn by the new tower rack,
please come down and retrieve to
stow it away for the winter.
• Dock Day is this month. Who still
thinks its summer and has their
boat in the water? Do not make the
men removing the docks work
around it.
December is around the corner.
Any holiday-related events will be
communicated via email and posted
on the sandwich board as long as an
early snowfall does not deter the
Tyburs from getting to it. Thank you
Tom and Tanya for doing this
tedious, yet important job, keeping
everyone informed all year long!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

It is hard to believe that it is November
already! From all of us at Beach 4, we
wish you all a wonderful and happy
Thanksgiving. We all have so much
to be thankful for, including our
community of friends and family in
Lake Mohawk. Once again we have
been blessed with another addition
to our beach family, the fourth of our
seven babies. Welcome Tyler James
Curd, and congratulations to proud
mom and dad, Allene and Tyler. We
are all looking forward to the arrival
of the rest of our sweet little babies. I
cannot wait to see them all playing
on the beach in 2015.
We would like to give a big “thank
you” to all of those who attended and
helped with dock day. We were sad to
see the boats come out and the toys
packed up, but you all worked so
hard and we appreciated the effort.
Remember to check your email or

getting ready to prepare for the winter ice on the
lake. Ice plays an important part of our lake quality.
It also plays an important part of safety as well.
Over the past few years, we have had some
problems with members using unapproved ice
retardant systems such as ice bubblers, “ice eaters”
and ice fans. In order to clarify the use of these
devices, we revisit some of our long standing Club
regulations and articles over the past 25 years.
of the lake through the winter and promote weed
growth. Last winter, we had about 18 inch thickness
of ice on the lake and this greatly reduced our weed
growth this past summer. This also greatly reduced
the algae bloom we experienced last year on the
lake during the hot summer.
The regulation regarding this issue is published in
the Marine Rules and Regulations under Winter
Activities.
Bubbling machines
“Bubbling machines are allowed along the sea
walls and around individual boat dock pilings
at a distance not to exceed 12 inches. Any
such machine must be electronically driven to
avoid noise.
No water pumps or devices are permitted.”
There are several important reasons
for this regulation.
4. Wildlife Management:
Large amounts of open water provide another
place for the Canada geese to winter. These birds
pose a serious threat to the lake’s water quality.
1. Safety:
5. Winter Recreation:
Ice that is weakened or open is a serious potential
safety hazard to families, neighbors and all
members of the community that may wish to use the
ice on the lake in the winter time. We are sure that
no member of LMCC would
want to be even remotely
connected with a winter
accident on Lake Mohawk.
Many of our members and children enjoy cross
country skiing, ice skating, hockey, ice boating and
other winter activities on the lake. Areas of open ice
interfere with the enjoyment and privileges of all
LMCC members and residents.
2. Liability:
In addition to safety risks to
persons there is the potential for liability both for the
property owners and the Country Club. An incident
occurring after knowledge and warning could be
difficult and costly to defend.
3. Lake Quality:
Our lake management consultant (Princeton
Hydro) advises us that we need a significant winter
period of ice with snow cover on it to help control
weed production in the following growing season.
Areas of open ice allow sunlight to reach the bottom
16
The Papoose
The regulation mentions two methods that can be
used to protect the seawalls and structures in
lakefront water lots. The permissible method is a
bubbler system that introduces compressed air
through small holes or slits in a submerged tube.
The release of the compressed air prevents ice
formation in the immediate vicinity of the perforations in the tubing.
This method is highly
effective over the range
of weather conditions
experienced in this
area as well as in far
colder regions. If used
properly, this method

the Lake
fully complies with all
the requirements of the
LMCC regulation.
The non-permissible
method consists of a
submerged pump or
propeller that lifts “warm”
water from the bottom of
the lake and directs it to
the surface. Not only do these devices create
uncontrollable areas of open ice, but the ice is
weakened for several hundred feet extending
beyond the open area. Sometimes these devices
become dislodged and tip over on the bottom of the
lake and then cause open channels of either
weakened ice or open water across the lake. These
devices are not permissible and are dangerous.
Timing is everything in
running any ice retardant
system. Limit the time that the
ice bubbler runs by using a
timer and thermostat. The
bubbler does not need to run
all day. Usually 4 hours per
day is sufficient, even on the
coldest days of the season.
There is also no need to have it run when
temperatures are above freezing and ice cannot
form. This saves you money and energy.
Before the ice starts to melt, turn off your ice
bubbler. Usually around the first week of March is
good. This allows a thin sheet of ice to connect to
your dock or seawall with the rest of the ice on the
lake. The ice is too thin to cause any damage and
the connection helps keep your dock and sea wall
safe. Open water acts as a runway for thick ice
sheets to be blown across and crash into your dock.
Having your dock connected to the ice matrix
protects it from moving ice sheets in open water
areas. Keeping the ice bubbler going as the ice
The Papoose
melts and breaks up on the lake may make your
dock a target for these ice flows.
Due to the serious nature of ice safety for our lake,
especially with non permissible devices, the
Trustees of LMCC have implemented an inspection
program. All ice retardant equipment must be
inspected and approved by Marine Services before
installation in the lake. Marine Services will monitor
the performance of the bubblers during the winter
season to ensure that they do not create open ice
more than 12 inches from any dock. Installation of
non-approved devices or persistent operation of a
device in a non-compliant manner will result in the
loss of all lake privileges for offending members.
Since this regulation has been in effect for more
than 25 years, there will be no exceptions for
existing non-permissible devices.
The Marine Services Committee would be pleased
to provide assistance to property owners with
questions regarding their present systems or with
criteria and suggestions for future systems. Please
do not hesitate to contact the LMCC office for
additional information on permissible and nonpermissible equipment, for assistance with
selection of permissible equipment and/or for
inspection of existing facilities.

International Tengo League
Lake Mohawk is the birthplace of
a new sport. It is called TENGO.
This exciting and fun to play game
is the brain child of Clubmember
Hugh Hauck.
TENGO tournaments are two day
events consisting of combined golf
and tennis competitions.
A TENGO tournament was held in
September at Hidden Acres Golf Club
and the Lake Mohawk Tennis Club.
The participants were Clubmembers
Tony Sigler, Rick Scotti, Tom Sudol
and the organizer Hugh Hauck.
The winner of the event was Rick
Scotti and the runner-up was Hugh
Hauck.
The first of this two day event is golf

and the rules and scoring system are
fairly simple. Four players take part
and are made-up of two pair teams,
the names are drawn out of a hat. Each
player plays six holes after which the
partners switch for the next six holes
and switch again for the last six of the
eighteen holes. This way all the
players have a different partner for
six holes and all players get to play
with each other evening out any
different levels of competence. For
each hole won each partner is
awarded two points. For a hole won
at par three points accrue to each
partner and if the hole is won with a
birdie, four points are awarded each
partner of the winning pair. At the
end of the day all the points that
each player has won are added up
and recorded.
The following day is the tennis
event and the same pairings play
three regular sets with a tie breaker at
six all. As with the golf event the
players switch partners after each
set. The games won by each pair
accrue as points for each individual
player and are added up at the end of
the third set, this is then added to the
previous day’s golf score and the
player with the highest total
combined score is the winner.
We plan to hold further competitions and it is our hope that other golf
and tennis enthusiasts will sign up
for future events at hhauck@century
link .net.

Dylan Panicucci Earns the Rank of Eagle Scout
Clubmember Dylan Panicucci was
awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on
April 27th at a special Eagle Scout
Court of Honor held by Sparta NJ
Troop 150. The son of Jeffrey and
Denise Panicucci, Dylan is a 2014
graduate of Sparta High School and
is now in his first year of study at The

hard work. To earn the rank of Eagle,
a scout must show leadership, service,
outdoor skills, citizenship, character
and personal fitness by earning at
least twenty-one merit badges and
he must complete a special
community service Eagle project.
Dylan’s Eagle Project was to build a
concrete block lacrosse rebound wall
at Station Park. The project took a
total of 245 man-hours and benefits
the residents of Sparta Township and
local lacrosse players. Dylan wanted
to specifically thank Sparta RediMix, RS Phillips Steel, Route 23 Patio
and Masonry, Drs. Panicucci and
Ouimette, Kuiken Brothers and

Last month’s Papoose article
incorrectly reported the results for
the Lightning spring series. The
correct results are Rich Miner in first
place, Perry Anderson second and
Chuck Chute third. Apologies to
Perry and Chuck for the error.
On September 7, three Lightning’s
did one race with Rich Miner coming
in first followed by Chuck Chute
second and Perry Anderson third. On
September 14 the Lightning’s did not
race but the Snipes held two races
with John Marx taking two firsts and

On September 21, the Lightning’s

Calling All Men to MOW IT OFF!
“Movember” is a global project
which is sweeping the nation. It has
to do with mustaches and falls
during the month of November,
hence “Movember.”
Started in Australia a number of
years ago as a way to call attention
and awareness to men’s health
issues, men would shave off their
mustaches and collect sponsors to
benefit charities of their choice.
With a little twist to this idea, the
local Xi Beta Rho Chapter of Beta
Sigma Phi International, known as
the Friendship Sorority worldwide,
will ask men to MOW IT OFF for a
special cause, in this case the
charity of choice will be NAMI
Sussex County, National Alliance
on Mental Illness and its programs,
to aid those with Post-traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD), such as
Veterans and first responders.
The local sorority chapter, Xi Beta

project is holding a fundraiser for

Grill and Bar, White Deer Plaza in
Sparta, on Sunday,November 2nd from
5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The admission
charge would entitle attendees to
three tickets, allowing them to select
two beers and a brat, two brats and
a beer or any combination. Trays of
cheeses and potato salad will
complement the offerings.
Guitar music for your listening
pleasure will be provided by a friend
of the organization.
Men and women attending will
learn about a new documentary
movie now being filmed called “Code

deals with dangerous situations
police officers and first responders
are often placed in on a daily basis,
which can bring on PTSD, especially
after years of keeping emotions in

Bob Cubby of Sparta, a retired Jersey

in this movie, will be on hand at St.

Art Show and Sale
“An Evening of Beauty,” a local
artists’ art exhibit and sale will be
held on Saturday evening, November
8, at 7:00 p.m. at The Institute of
Spiritual Development, 15 Sparta Ave.
This event is a wonderful opportunity
to celebrate some of the remarkable
artistic talent in and around Sparta.
Many pieces are for sale and the
prices are very reasonable.
The evening includes a complimentary
wine and cheese tasting, a silent
auction of many of the artists’ works
and a 50/50 raffle. There will also be
dessert and coffee.
Patricia Lazzara, a professional
flutist, will provide live musical
accompaniment during the event.
Patricia, a distinguished soloist as
well as a chamber and orchestral
musician, is a three-time winner of
the Artists International competition
in New York City.
Among the talented local artists are
Marge Reynolds, who paints in
acrylics; Anna Marie Ludwig, an
innovative local pottery designer;
Leslie Parkin, who paints in both oil
and watercolor; and Susan Cahill and
Claire H. Groeber, both watercolorists.
One of the specially featured artists
is Frances Phillips. Fran is an adjunct
professor of art and an instructor of
folk and decorative arts at Seton Hall
University. She is a celebrated jewelry
designer and also works with fabrics,
paints in oil, watercolor and mixed
media. Another of the featured
artists is Robin Lennon. Robin is a
mixed media painter and an apparel
and accessory designer. Known for
her interior designs and functional
art, she owns and operates the
boutique, Inner Designs, which is
located on Spring Street in Newton.
Also featured is Joseph Losavio.
Joseph is a visionary painter who
combines oils, collage elements
and sculptural materials. He uses
landscape as the metaphor for
exploring his place in the world.
Come and just enjoy the evening
or get a jump on your holiday
shopping. Cost for the evening is $5
in advance or $10 at the door. For
additional information or to register
in advance please call Rev. Susan at
973-729-1064.
Top 5 Fall Home Cleaning Projects
Now that fall has arrived, and
you've officially put away your grill
and cleared out that patio furniture,
it is a great idea to clean for fall. The
following article offers five tips for
prepping your home for the fall
season.
1. Wash your windows. Spring and
summer may have left a film of
pollen and other debris over your
windows. Give them a rinse inside
and outside to watch the leaves
change through sparkling glass.
2. Clean chimney and flue. If you
have a fireplace, you may already
be stocking up on wood for those
chilly fall nights. However, it is a
good idea to hire someone to clean
out your chimney and flue before
lighting up, to rid your home of old
28
The Papoose
ash and creosote that could be an
irritant, and cause unwanted fires.
3. Have a dust party. During the
winter months, we spend a lot
more time indoors. To prep, give
your home a good dust to rid your
walls, baseboards and even your
ceiling of pesky dust particles.
4. Update your window treatments.
Swap those airy summer curtains
for your heavier winter window
garb. This will keep drafts at bay
and help lend your home a cozy
fall feeling.
5. Clean your oven. Fall and winter
are for roasting and baking. Make
sure your oven is in tip-top shape
by giving it a good scrub.

Soon the luminary candle lights
will be flickering throughout Sparta
and surrounding Sussex County
communities!
As many families have found that
during the holiday season it is fun
and rewarding to join together and
participate in the Saint Kateri Squires
Luminary Night project. Saint Kateri
Squires, Ed Weaver and Ben Insley,
two Sparta High School students,
are leading the Luminary project
again this year. Together, with the
Saint Kateri Squires, the young men
are preparing for the 5th Annual
Luminary Night which will be held
on December 13, 2014. The young
men have prepared more than 500
kits which are ready to be purchased
and used for this special night.
A luminary kit consists of ten white
bags, ten vigil candles and some
sand and is being sold for $10.
Families can line the edge of their
driveway or front stoop on the
evening of December 14 and enjoy
the soft flicker of light while helping
those in need. Profits will benefit
Family Promise of Sussex County,
Samaritan Inn, as well as the Sparta
Food Pantry.
Looking for ways to make a
difference in our town during the
holidays? Please join us on Saturday,
December 13th, all participants in
Sparta, Byram, Andover, Newton and
surrounding communities will light
their luminaries in a show of support
to the homeless.
Kits are available to be purchased
anytime at Greene’s Beans, 31 Theatre
Center, Sparta NJ. For more information: Please email sweave@embarq
