ROSE CITY MOTORCYCLE CLUB
Welcome to all you new members who have just recently joined Rose City Motorcycle Club. We hope you will feel welcome and join in
on the activities and fun we schedule for you throughout the year. We encourage you to come to our monthly breakfast meetings on
the third Saturday of each month at HomeTown Buffet, 3790 SW Hall Blvd, Beaverton, OR. There is usually at least a half-day ride after
breakfast for those who want to ride with some friends.
PREZ SEZ
Wow!!Wow!!! and WOW!!!!WOW!!!!!
What a great summer & Early Fall. AND>>>>>>>> We still have
more activities coming up (Toy Run “First Sat. in Dec.), Seattle
Bike Show, Xmas Dinner & White Elephant Exchange(12-14). Contact Virginia for all the fun details. I hope to see everyone there.
We have had some very successful member events “campouts”
“Breakfast-To-Lunch-To-Dinner-To-Pie” run, Packed room (120+)
at the Grand Tour Banquet, etc.
My thanks to our hard working Social Director, Virginia Berkey. In addition I want to THANK all the RCMC Members and all
the Plus 1 & 2s’ who came early and stayed late to set-up, teardown, & clean up the Grand Tour Banquet. I also want to take a
moment to give my SPECIAL THANKS to all current and previous
RCMC Board members for all their hard work and dedication to
RCMC. Building this great organization has taken soul & good will
from all of them and I want each and everyone of them to know
how special they are.
Thank You All… Char
FROM THE ROAD CAPTAIN
From the Road Captain
by John Goff
So 2015 is approaching fast! The short list of coming RCMC activities:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
The annual Grand Tour Banquet for our participants
(RCMC members are encouraged to attend - Dutch treat.)
And the 2014-15 Seattle Bike Show - this year is UN-usually early on November 22, 2014.
The annual ABATE Toy Run (see info from Den Bair on
this.)
The annual RMC Christmas Dinner and White Elephant
Exchange
(Look to Virginia Berkey for more info)
And the New Year’s day Polar Bear Run hosted by Trinity
Road Riders.
I will be organizing the annual “Van Pool” junket up to the Seattle
Bike Show, November 21 thru 23, 2014. http://www.motorcycleshows.com/seattle
So assuming there is enough interest to do it again (12 or more),
we can do the Vanpool / carpool up and back to the Seattle Bike
Show. This traveling gab fest is always a lot of fun, and at today’s’
fuel prices, a cheaper way to accomplish the trip. So if you are
interested in vanpooling up to the Seattle Bike Show this year on
Saturday, November 22nd, _PLEASE_ send me an email and let
me know.
Also – I see that Bill Flannery has sent the annual request for your
miles ridden in 2014. I invite EVERY one to please send in your
miles ridden for this year. I would really like to see a higher percentage of Club members participate in this annual tabulation.
Once again Bill Flannery has offered to assist me with this. “Thank
you Bill !” And you will be sending your mileage to him. You may
report to him in early December at: Billflan@comcast.net.
The Boeing Air Museum of Flight (Jan / Feb time frame) I have been talking about revisiting this winter time group activity
that we have not done for over 10 years. We have done this twice
separated by 4 years back then. And a good time was had by all
then. This is an all-day adventure to do. And in the last 10 years
major changes and additions have happened. We can Vanpool up
and back on that Saturday. I would like to start building a participant list. So if you have this interest too, please send me an email!
With change of season, our weather changes the condition of the
roads on which we ride. Lots of summer accumulated oil that will
be washing off each time it rains, which we have not had much of
this Fall. So take care out there. I have always felt that Autumn in
the great Pacific Northwest is a spectacular season to ride in as
the leaves change color and fall closes in on us. Just remember
that all those loose leaves make for a poor traction surface while
you are enjoying the scenery! And I find a certain seasonal fixation
about turkey gravy is growing with eager anticipation!
FROM THE SOCIAL DIRECTOR
Well, I guess fall is really here with all the rain today. That means
that the Christmas party is only a couple months away. It will be
held on Sunday, December 14 with sign-in beginning at 4:00 p.m.
It will be a pot luck meal with dinner at 5:00 p.m. and the awards,
ornament exchange, and white elephant gift exchange following.
We should be done by about 8:00 p.m. You will need to bring your
favorite dish to feed about 10 people, whatever drinks you want,
your wrapped ornament and your wrapped white elephant gift.
The club will provide spiral-cut ham, coffee, tea, and hot choco-
late. The party will be held at Clark College in Vancouver in Gaiser
Hall. This is the same place it was held last year. See the flyer and
a map of Clark College later in this newsletter. Remember NO ALCOHOL is allowed at the party since it is at Clark College. We will
need anyone who can to stay afterward to help clean up and get
stuff loaded back into John and Char’s truck and into John’s and
my car. Any help will be much appreciated.
If you plan on attending and will not be at breakfast in November
to sign up, you can call me at 503=964-5229 (H) or 971-344-0832
(C). You can also email me at virginiaberkey@yahoo.com.
I really hope a lot of you will attend. It is really a fun time and a
great time for fellowship to meet and talk with other club members.
Neither John Kitzhaber nor Dennis Richardson responded. In District 1 Jason Yates was in full support of AMA’s positions on motorcyclists rights. In District 5 Tootie Smith was was supportive
of more than half of AMA’s positions for off- highway riding, and
in full support of AMA’s on-highway positions. There was no response from candidates from any other districts. If you are and
AMA member you can access the 2014 AMA Voter Guide here:
http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/rights/issueslegislation
If you haven’t received your ballot yet or need to locate a ballot
drop box, go here: http://sos.oregon.gov/voting/Pages/myballot.

Fellow RCMC Members:

Social Director
As you know, each year we compile mileage information for all
RCMC members. There are two reasons for this:
FROM THE MEMBER BENEFITS OFFICER
Club dues are going up $5 to $30 per year on January 2015. We
will be taking renewals at the Christmas Party and November &
December Breakfast Meetings. Save $5 and renew before 12-3114! New members joining RCMC from now to end of the year are
paid through the end of 2015, tell your friends! Renewals are being mailed out to your home address by November 15th.

1) Many members are eligible for the high mileage award presented at our annual Holiday party.
2) The number of miles the entire club rides during the year (all
member miles combined) is quite impressive. We take pride in
not only being one of the largest clubs but also one that collectively rides the most.
Please take a moment and send an e-mail (or call if necessary)
with the following information regarding your bike(s):
- Year, make and model of bike(s)
- Odometer reading on bike(s) as of 12/7/13. If you don’t have a
record or recollection of odometer reading from 12/7/13, please
provide an estimate. This will be used to calculate your 2014
miles ridden. Please note: if you provided this odometer reading
info to Bill Flannery via e-mail or phone call last year we already
have a record of it, so no need to resend.
Happy November Birthdays to:
John Berkey, Tim Correia, Randy Craig, Nacy DiNovo,
Dan Dishongh, Michael Gies, Carol Haertlein, Richard Howard,
Michael McDonald, David Norris, Bruce Schwindt
and Del Walters!
FROM THE LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVE
Time to Vote!
The America Motorcyclist Association reached out to all candidates for Congress and to all gubernatorial candidates to encourage them to complete an AMA questionnaire concerning motorcyclists’ rights. Some responded, but many did not.
- Odometer reading on bike(s) as of 12/6/14 (or sooner please if
you are done riding for the year). This will be used to calculate
your 2014 miles ridden.
Even if you didn’t ride as much as you wanted to this year, please
send in the info.
Again, please take a moment and advise above info to Bill Flannery as soon as possible (by 12/6/14 at the absolute latest).
Please note Bill’s e-mail address listed below:

End of Year, Notable Riding Quotes, 2014
Bill Flannery
Now that the glorious 2014 summer is over and the rainy season
has begun here in the beautiful Northwest: It’s time to take a moment to reflect on our motorcycling experiences and highlights
from the year. One of the things I remember about riding each
year are the memorable, insightful, compelling comments made
by fellow riders. All have special meaning and conjure truly awesome ride memories. Here are just a few quotes that all of us have
most likely heard at one time or another. This month’s installment
revolves around weather, roads and misc. Next month’s installment revolves around fuel, end of day lodging, tires, fun/mischief
and misc. If you come up with any additional ones please holler:
Weather related:
* “Rain Drill”: Geno LeSieur whenever we stop to put on rain gear
* “The fog is gonna burn off, it’s gonna get better”: Meylan Thoreson: On an early a.m. ride in thick fog.
* “It’s probably clear at the top of the mountain”: Ken Hattan:
As we rode within 5 miles of Windy Ridge on Mt St Helens and
turned around as the fog/clouds were thick, was pouring rain and
visibility was virtually non-existent.
* “It’s snowing but it’s not gonna stick: Idiot Bill Flannery on the
way to a checkpoint in Utah by himself on a Gold Wing riding
through 2-3 inches of snow on the road.
* “Here, take these gloves and jacket”: Mike Flannery to a Lawman 1000 ride/event participant who was riding the event without gloves or any other appropriate riding gear for the EXTREMELY cold weather conditions.
* “You may want to bring your electric gear”: Geno Lesieur to Bill
Flannery just 5 minutes prior to leaving for a ride to Alaska. I’d be
a part of the frozen tundra if I hadn’t taken Geno’s advice.
* “If we leave right now, we can beat that storm”: Ken Hattan: After checking radar on his cell phone. About 5 miles later we luckily
got off the road to a safe and warm location as all hell broke loose
and a MAJOR storm rolled through.
* “I see blue spots”: Geno LeSieur: The ultimate weather optimist.
* “Maybe we should just stay in this town tonight”: Eric Gittings:
Upon checking out the weather system ahead.
Road related:
* “This road is paved all the way, right? Ron Clarno to Tee Wan
and Bill Flannery when looking for new, untraveled roads. By the
way, it wasn’t…
* “Let’s turn around and ride that road again”: Everyone who has
ridden Rte 1 in California.
* “I wonder where this road comes out…”
Misc:
* “It’s all part of the adventure”: Meylan Thoreson: Whenever
something unexpected arises during a ride. Even if it’s an unwanted something…..
* “This place would make a GREAT Grand Tour Checkpoint”: Many
riders at many locations.
* “Even a bad ride is better than NO ride”: Ken Hattan: After a ride
in crappy weather conditions… How true it is, eh?
* “I could ride ALL night”: Bill Flannery in the middle of many
beautiful, warm summer evenings.
* “Did you ride this weekend?”: Co-workers asking this same
question every Monday morning…. The answer is almost always
“Yes”…
* “My hiney hurts”: Eric Gittings after riding all day on any bike
other than his HD.
* “Where should we go?” Common question when meeting for a
ride with no predetermined destination.
* “Where are you guys going?” Question from “Army Dan” to
Mike Flannery (somewhere along the Oregon coast when stopped
for fuel): a stranger riding an Aprilia who rode with us down to
Laguna Seca and back one year. He had a blast riding with us and
they’re now good friends.
* “Did you see that deer?”: Nope, I didn’t… Yikes….
* “What town is this?”
* “Where the hell are we?”
