Parents in all grades are encouraged to attend this informative meeting to learn how
to navigate the Naviance system. This on-line program will become a highly valuable
resource for parents and students as the years move along.
Some highlights of the program allow students to:

View voice-recorded videos on thousands of career possibilities

Consider a wide variety of scholarship opportunities

Search for potential colleges based on personal preferences

Keep an ongoing electronic log of extracurricular activities
In addition, an overview of Method Test Prep will be given. This is also an online
program available to Hewlett students that focuses on ACT and SAT preparation. It is
a wonderful tool to help students become familiar with these standardized exams.

graduation ceremony, students are
honored who have made significant
community service contributions. To be
eligible for this recognition, students
must complete a total of 30 hours of
voluntary and unpaid community service
for each year of high school — totaling
120 hours prior to graduation. Visit the

Choices and Consequences:
The District Attorney’s Office of Nassau
County presented a very powerful
program to our senior class related to
distracted and drunk driving. The
statistics of young people involved in
fatal accidents far surpasses any other
age group.
The message became very clear as the
presentation came to a close, when a
young man took the podium and shared
his story of driving
erratically under the
influence and the harsh
consequences he faced.
Practice ACT: Saturday, December 13th
An online registration will open for a Practice ACT on November 12th. Students will be informed of this new test
administration and our new registration procedure in their English classes. Admission tickets will be given to each
registered student the week prior to the exam. This admissions ticket must accompany the student on test day.
Students will be asked to report to the Hewlett High School Auditorium no later than 7:45 a.m. on the morning of
December 13th, where classroom assignments will be posted on large screens. Students must have two #2 pencils, a
graphing calculator, photo ID, and their admissions ticket. Students will not be permitted to take exam without
proper photo ID and admissions ticket! Snacks must be packed in clear zip-lock bags with name clearly labeled.
Labels must be removed from all water bottles.
Acceptable Photo ID documents include:

Valid driver’s license or driver's permit

Test Preparation:
Hewlett is pleased to partner with Method Test Prep in helping our kids prepare for the PSAT, Practice ACT, SAT and
ACT exams. We are excited to share multiple ways to prep for these standardized exams.

All Hewlett Students have access to an innovative online program through their Castle Learning Accounts. Method
Test Prep provides evaluation exams, lessons, and full-length exams for both the ACT and SAT. This is a valuable
tool for all students.

Method Test Prep hosts evening classes at Hewlett HS prior to an ACT and/or SAT exam. Click here to view the

As our youngest students approach the end of the first
marking period in high school, they will have time to
reflect on what works best and/or what’s not working in
relation to their study habits or organization skills. This is
the ideal time for a presentation of Study Skills.
Students will be introduced to numerous tips and
techniques that have proven successful with older
students. Freshmen will also be asked to share any of
their study habits that have been beneficial to them.

Please help us extend invitations to our alum from the
Class of 2014 to return to HHS for a breakfast in their
honor, beginning at 9 am.
The Five Components of an Admissions Folder
This lesson focuses on guiding our students through
high school with a clear understanding of what
elements go into making admissions decisions. Our
goal is to expose students to an early awareness of
these components, which should help keep them
focused as they move through years. Discussion

College Admissions Reminders:
1. Student must be CLEAR with their recommending teachers about their college application deadlines. The
teacher form must be completely filled out with the correct information needed in this process.
2. It is the student’s responsibility to check his/her application status for missing documents. Wait approximately
one/two weeks for documents to upload on status screen from the time of Naviance submission.
3. Students must send their ACT and/or SAT from their online accounts. PPS does not send scores.
4. Transcript Release Requests for colleges with January 2015 deadline must be submitted to PPS no later than
December 6th.
5. Be mindful of what you post on your social networking sites. Click here to read more!
6. Follow up with your emails! Colleges may request additional information such as your 1st quarter grades or
submission of the CSS Profile. (see below)
7. Email Mrs. Keller at gkeller@hewlett-woodmere.net to make a request to send 1st
quarter grades.
8. Keep up your grades the entire year! Admission to every college is contingent on successful high school
completion! Your final GPA must be similar to the GPA at acceptance time!
9. Communicate with your counselor and teachers if you apply to additional colleges!
10. Check websites and/or call admissions office to learn method of releasing admissions decisions.
College Scholarships and Financial Aid:
Once the college applications have been submitted, students and parents should immediately turn their
attention to researching scholarships. There is a great deal of scholarship money available for students, but it
does require research! Popular scholarship websites are Schoolsoup.com, Collegeboard.com, Fastweb.com and
Scholarship.com. Also view your Naviance Account for additional scholarship opportunities!
CSSProfile is requested by many private colleges and has a much earlier deadline date than the FAFSA.
Pay close attention to what each school requires from you once your application is submitted!
Each month, the PPS Newsletter will post the most recent scholarship information delivered to our office. It is
important to be knowledgeable of the different scholarship programs available to high school students:

Need Based Scholarships: Money awarded based on financial need; as demonstrated on the FAFSA.
Packages are mailed home in early spring of senior year after electronic submission of FAFSA form.

Merit Scholarships: Money awarded based upon academic achievement during high school and standardized
test scores. Generally, no additional work is required and notification comes with (or shortly after) admissions
offer.

College Based Scholarships: Money awarded by a specific college. Many competitive colleges award money
based on additional requirements that are fulfilled on separate scholarship application.

General College Scholarships: Many organizations offer scholarship money based upon a variety of factors.
Each scholarship will require a separate application with varying degrees of additional work.


Our senior students have a wonderful opportunity to meet with local college representatives and have an instant
admissions decision made at our on-site program. There are many benefits to participating. Among them are:

Check the bulletin board outside the PPS Office for eligibility. If you qualify, please make an appointment ASAP
with Mrs. Martillotti for an interview and to obtain an application for your selected college.
The following information must be submitted to your School Counselor at least 10 days before your appointment.
It is important to discuss what materials are needed and verify what is already on file in our office. While we may

Our newly created website contains departmental
information and specific college admission testing
information and applications. There is a section
containing articles of interest for parents and a
calendar with upcoming events. In this page there is
also a blog titled: Events, News, Information & Updates
from the LC. It provides descriptions of
current events and upcoming academic,
social or extra-curricular information for
students and parents.
The Bellmore-Merrick School District SEPTA is
sponsoring their annual college and trade school fair at
Calhoun High School on Thursday, November 6th.
Hewlett parents and student are invited to participate in
this highly informative evening. Registration begins at
6:30 pm and presentations begin at 7:20 pm. This
presentation is appropriate for students and parents
who are interested in learning about the many post high

Pen Pals:
Ms. Shanahan and Mrs. Wozniak’s students are making friends across the country! Students in their
Learning Center English class are now communicating with pen pals from New Jersey, Georgia, Montana,
and California. The students are writing and receiving monthly letters, postcards, and pictures as they learn
about other students and their towns and states. Reading, writing, and overall communication skills are
worked on while students are building meaningful friendships!
Senior Seminar News:
The students enrolled in Mrs. Valdez’ Senior Seminar continued to have activities that enrich their classroom
learning. Ms. Julie Yindra from the Hofstra PALs Program along with a former Hewlett graduate (who is also a
Hofstra graduate) conducted a presentation about the PALS program at Hofstra and its support services. This
presentation was very well received by the students and was bountiful with important and relevant information. Dr.
Ruiz Quintana also conducted a presentation during Senior Seminar on October 20 th as a way of assisting
students in the transition process and further understanding their IEP and exit documents. This presentation
focused on the shift from high school to post-secondary services. Students participated in an engaging session
regarding their advocacy skills and ownership of their post-secondary exit plan and how to manage this change.
Burning Bases Kickball Fest/Fall Bash Dance: Members Wanted: Bulldog Buddies!
On October 28, the Life Skills Class participated in a
county wide activity, Burning Bases Kickball Fest at
Garden City. This day is devoted to the enhancement of
social and recreational skills for all students in life
skills programs. The students were accompanied by
Mrs. Samlin, and a group of High School Leaders and
Bulldog Buddies. We are also looking forward to our
Fall Bash Dance -sponsored by the Leaders Club. This
dance will take place on Monday, November 3rd from
6:00 to 8:00PM at the High School. Several
neighboring school districts will be in attendance. Put
on your dancing shoes and join us as we welcome the
autumnal weather!
The Bulldog Buddies mission is to teach our children the
importance of friendship, compassion and the
embracing of all people no matter what their differences.
This is a great peer program and opportunity for
students. The Bulldog Buddies program connects
students with all abilities with students with disabilities
as a way of enriching social interactions, friendship and
peer assistance in social, academic or extra-curricular
events. All students are welcome and encouraged to
become a Bulldog Buddies. Applications can be
downloaded from the Special Education Blog or obtained
at Ms. Cornell’s Classroom (Room 110) or at either Dr.
Fulton or Ruiz Quintana’s office (LC-1). For more
