M USIC N OTES
Today men from the choir will sing the Kyrie and Agnus Dei “Rex splendens ”
from the Gr aduale Romanum, a book of chants for the litur gy. This volume was
compiled by the monks of Solesmes Abbey in France.
During Communion, the choir will sing “A Song to the Lamb ” by Calvin
Hampton (1938-1984). Hampton was organist of Calvary Episcopal Chur ch in
New York City for many years. He was k nown for a s eries of or gan r ecitals he
founded which occurred on Friday evenings at midnight. Today the choir will sing
a joyful anthem of his, the text of which comes from R evelation.
The organ piece after High Mass is a setting of the Te Deum by Jean Langlais
(1907- 1991). Te Deum is an ancient hymn of praise; the English translation can
be found in the front of the hymnal at S282. In the beginning Langlais presents
the original melody in slow octaves, followed by cr ashing, dr amatic harmonies.

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray.
Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your
well¯beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the
peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together
under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
First Reading—Ezekiel 34: 11-17
Thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out.
As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I
will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have
been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the
peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own
land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all
the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the
mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good
grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself
will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord
GOD. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the
injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I
will feed them with justice. As for you, my flock, thus says the Lord GOD: I shall
judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and goats:

Come let us sing to the Lord; let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation. Let us
come before his presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to him with
psalms.
All repeat the refrain
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hands are the
caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he
made it, and his hands have molded the dry land.
All repeat the refrain
Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord our maker.
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand,
oh that today you would hearken to his voice.
All repeat the refrain
Second Reading—I Corinthians 15: 20-28
In fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.
For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also
come through a human being; for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in
Christ. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those
who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to
God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power.
For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to
be destroyed is death. For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But
when it says, “All things are put in subjection,” it is plain that this does not include
the one who put all things in subjection under him. When all things are subjected to
him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who put all things in
subjection under him, so that God may be all in all.

Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Jesus said, “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him,
then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be gathered before
him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep
from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left.
Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, you that are blessed by my
Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for
I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to
drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me
clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.'
Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and
gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we
saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave y ou clothing? And when
was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' And the king will answer
them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are
members of my family, you did it to me.' Then he will say to those at his left hand,
'You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil
and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you
gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and
you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they
also will answer, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger
or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?' Then he will answe r
them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did

 Lord, in your mer-cy,
 Hear our prayer.
Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the w ays of justice and

Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its
resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory.
Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ
in them, and love one another as he loves us.
Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage
and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your sa lvation.
We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be
fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom.
The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect.

Confession of Sin
Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word,
and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not
loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We
are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have
mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.
The Celebrant says
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus
Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you
in eternal life. Amen.

The people remain standing. The Celebrant continues
We acclaim you holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your
wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into
our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your
10
creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to
the power of death. In your mercy you came to your help, so that in seeking you we
might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through
the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation.
Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your
only son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin M ary, he
lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of
salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he
gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the
whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him
who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who
believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the
sanctification of all.
When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father,
having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper
with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and
gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and
when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This
is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death
and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to you
right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you
have give us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you.

We praise you,
we bless you,
we give thanks to you,
and we pray to you, Lord our God.
Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend
upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts
for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood
of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become
one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name.
Remember, Lord, your one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, redeemed by the
blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace.
Remember all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those
who seek your truth. Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those
11
whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light.
And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Bles sed Virgin Mary, with
patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and all the saints who have found favor
with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through
your Son Jesus Christ Our Lord.
Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours,
Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever.
AMEN.
