Vol. XLI I No. 4 THE NEWS OF DELAWARE’S FIRST CONGREGATION DECEMBER 2014 FROM THE PEN OR KEYBOARD OF RABBI SAKS Shalom Chaverim, The question below was recently posed to me. Do you find the December Dilemma to be particularly stressful? The December dilemma is not simply a December dilemma, it is a yearround dilemma. We are a minority that has been warmly embraced by our fellow Americans, a testament to America's goodness. However, being handed the keys to mainstream American society has made it very easy to forget our Jewish identities. It is not uncommon for Jews in this country to consider themselves to be simply Americans, not American Jews. However, most Americans do not consider themselves to be simply American but to be Christians, Muslims, etc. Most Americans crave a religious identity, and people who are not raised with one will embrace the religious identity of the majority. Therefore, it is not surprising that often American Jews who are not raised with a strong Jewish identity celebrate Christmas. I once heard a grandmother say that she would be upset if her grandson was sent to a Jewish school because he would not be exposed to enough diversity. A few years later I heard her lament the fact that her grandson was raised with virtually no Jewish identity. Needless to say he was not attending a day school. Being exposed to diversity is important, but one’s Jewish identity should not be sacrificed for it. Just by raising a child in America he/she will be exposed to diversity. As a minority we must make a sustained effort to safeguard our identity. Three things in particular have been found to be effective in inculcating children with a sense of Jewish identity: day schools (especially as teens), Jewish camps and trips to Israel (especially as teens and young adults when they are forming their adult identities). It has been said that "The Jews have not kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept DECEMBER, 2014 SHOFAR 1 ADAS KODESCH SHEL EMETH the Jews," for it has provided us with an identification. Finding ways to observe Shabbat with 4412 Washington Blvd. your family is enjoyable and crucial in preserving Wilmington, DE 19802-1226 our identity. It is also easy. In fact you can become Synagogue Office (302) 762-2705 Shomer Shabbat (Sabbath observant). We think E-mail to office@akse.org FAX (302) 762-3236 being Shomer Shabbat means being fully Shabbat Delaware Community Hebrew School observant but the word Shomer means to “guard.” If (302) 762-3618 we can find ways to make Shabbat special we are AKSE Website www.akse.org being Shomer Shabbat. It can be as simple as Steven Saks, Rabbi having a Friday night dinner with your family Yehoshua Redfern, Cantor Gail Weinberg, Educational Director without the interruption of electronic devices or setting aside time on Shabbat to read a Jewish OFFICERS Jonathan Jaffe, President book. By embracing our identity December will cease Max Rosenberg, Executive VP to be a dilemma and become simply the month in Neil Rosen, VP Finance which many of our American friends celebrate one of Harriet Ainbinder their major holidays. Please consider contributing to a campaign that has been established to help the families that have been devastated by the attack. Four families in the community, all from the same street in Har Nof, no longer have a father and husband. A website has been setup to accept donations: http://jewcer.com/project/do-something-for-the-families-of-har-nof All donations will go directly to the affected families. This attack was personal for one of our members, Barbara and Joel Roisman. Their son Ari lived in Har Nof for a year when he began learning in Yeshiva and davened regularly at the shul that was attacked. He still has many good friends in that community. Ari and his business partners were instrumental in establishing the donation website. It has already been mentioned in the Israeli press: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/187609#.VGvyTVfF_R9 Please give what you can to the campaign - all amounts help. Thank you. Ken Kamm in college or MicroSoft clip art? 1-4 pm at AKSE So many ways to Purchase Gift Cards! 1) Want to buy gift cards but are not able to get to the synagogue? No problem! Just call the synagogue office, tell them what you need, and they will mail the cards to you. You will be required to pay for them, by check, as soon as possible, but no later than seven (7) days after placing your order It's that simple! You might be asking .... why can't I just use my credit card to purchase gift cards and not have to write a check? Answer: The synagogue needs to pay a service charge of up to 4% on credit card transactions, so, as you can see, this would eat into the 5% we would earn on the sale of gift cards. We are implementing this on a trial basis. We feel that this is a process we must try, to make it easier for AKSE Congregants to obtain gift cards. The synagogue will assume the liability on the remote possibility that gift cards are not received. 2) Come to the synagogue during normal business hours and purchase them directly from our friendly office staff 3) Come to the synagogue on Sunday mornings when the gift shop is open and purchase directly from Dianne Seidel. 4) Call AKSE Members: Marty Zukoff—302 478 4734 Chalfonte Dianne Seidel 302 479 0490 Green Acres GIFT CARDS AVAILABLE: ShopRite, Superfresh, ACME, Super G ($50, $100 denominations) Walgreens ($100 denomination) Since we all make purchases from supermarkets and drug stores, there is really no reason why we should not be able to get greater than 90% participation from AKSE Congregants. There is absolutely no cost to you, and a great way to support one of AKSE's ongoing fundraising projects. To order your gift cards: Call the synagogue office at (302) 762-2705, or email your order to the office at office@akse.org For any questions about this program, please contact Marty Zukoff, at martyzukoff@gmail.com, or (302) 478-4734 Thank you for your support! 8 SHOFAR The Gift Card Committee DECEMBER 2014 An evening of learning at the Sixth Annual AKSE ACADEMY featuring Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth’s own knowledgeable and engaging experts!
