WADESTOWN SCHOOL Community Newsletter Principal: Sally Barrett Website: www.wadestown.school.nz Thursday 20 November, 2014 Dear Parents Celebrating Success Our assemblies at the Side and Main Schools are a special time for staff and students to come together to share music, class items, forthcoming events and celebrate all the wonderful achievements of our students. Everyone at Wadestown School looks forward to assembly time, starting from the Side School assemblies each Friday morning and continuing at the Main School on Mondays. At this week’s Main School assembly we welcomed George Nepia from the Wellington Rugby Union who presented George Sims with two medals for his outstanding contribution to the Wellington Primary Schools Rugby Team. The Wellington team won the recent Southern North Island Primary Schools Tournament held in Otaki and George was also named in the Tournament Team. George spoke about how much he enjoyed being part of a great team environment and one of his highlights was beating the Hutt Valley team in a close match. This year 10,000 students from around New Zealand participated in the Otago Problem Solving Final Challenge Maths Competition. Students took 5 tests over the year and those who gained the highest marks were invited to sit the final challenge test and we were thrilled that 13 students from Wadestown School were eligible. At our assembly this week we congratulated Hamish Baguley for winning second place in the Problem Solving Final Challenge for New Zealand. This is an outstanding result that the school celebrated with Hamish on Monday. We are very proud of him and this wonderful achievement. George Nepia with George, Anna and Andrew Sims Hamish Baguley News from the Side School Both Year 1 and Year 2 classes are currently visiting the ASB Stadium on a weekly basis. The children are revelling in the opportunity to practice their gymnastic skills as well as football and basketball. Pipitea Marae Visit Year 5-8 students visited Pipitea Marae in Thorndon where they took part in a variety of learning experiences. Kaumātua, Koro Monty, speaking at the pōwhiri Poi (games and songs with poi) Whaea Pekaira explaining the history of Pipitea Marae Raranga harakeke (hand weaving with flax) Tītī tōrea or ti rakau (stick games and songs) Mahi whai (string games) Te Papa Marae Visit Rooms 9 and 10 recently visited the marae at Te Papa and learnt about waharoa (gateways) and the meaning of patterns in Maori art such as koru, poutama (stairs), and patiki (flounder). Student Council Leaders visit to Ronald McDonald House Last Wednesday we visited Ronald McDonald House to present them with the money we raised from the sausage sizzle last term. We met up with Courtney, the fundraising manager, who took us around the house and showed us some of the things donated money goes towards. It was really cool to see that lots of different companies volunteer to cook dinner for the house. On the wall next to the kitchen was a roster for who was cooking dinner each night of the week and it was almost full. In this picture we are standing in front of a wall they have in the foyer. Each balloon has a sticker with the name of the company who donated the money on it. The bigger balloons symbolise a bigger donation and the smaller ones, a smaller donation. It was really great to see where our fundraising money was being spent. The Friends of the Botanic Garden are helping to raise funds for the planned new Children’s Garden to be situated in the Wellington Botanic Garden. To promote this wonderful initiative our school orchestra is taking part in this concert which will also involve other schools in the region. Once the funds for the garden have been raised and the garden built, Wellington City Council will maintain the Children’s Garden as part of the main Botanic Garden and employ a professional educator to work with school groups and other visitors. The concert begins at 1.00pm and will conclude at 3.00pm. Families are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy the musical entertainment throughout the afternoon. A special thank you to Rupa Maitra for organising the involvement of the Wadestown School orchestra. Her commitment and enthusiasm in leading our orchestra is much appreciated by us all. This is to familiarise you with the school layout and have a refreshment before the PTA meeting (which you are welcome, but not obliged, to attend). Tea towels Thank you for all of the tea towel orders. The organisers are expecting delivery next week, so they will hopefully be home to parents by Friday 28th of November. Class Christmas presents for teachers and staff It has become a tradition for the PTA to organise Christmas presents for all the school staff. We are planning to do this again so that we can thank both the teaching and the support staff for all that they have done to provide another great year. The presents are partly funded by donations from families. The donation is completely voluntary, and the amount of the donation is up to each family, but we suggest $5 per child. If you would like to contribute towards these presents you can do so by: - placing your donation in the "elephant box" outside the office at the main school; - placing your donation in the ice cream container on table in the hallway at the side school (this will be cleared every day);or - by internet banking. The PTA account is 12-3140-0348889-00. Reference: GIFTS (Please don't use the school bank account number). Of course children may still bring in cards or small/homemade gifts for their teachers if they wish, but there will be no other "organised" presents for teachers. We hope this helps to make the "end of year" run smoothly and reduce some of the stress for everyone. Next meeting Wednesday 26 November, 7.30pm main school staffroom.
