Come, thou Father of the poor, Come, with treasures which endure; Come, thou Light of all that live! Thou, of all consolers best, Thou, the soul's delightful guest, Dost refreshing peace bestow. Thou in toil art comfort sweet; Pleasant coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe. Light immortal, Light divine, Visit thou these hearts of thine, And our inmost being fill. If thou take thy grace away, Nothing pure in man will stay; All his good is turned to ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour thy dew, Wash the stains of guilt away. Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray. Thou, on us who evermore Thee confess and thee adore, With thy sevenfold gifts descend. Give us comfort when we die; Give us life with thee on high; Give us joys that never end. It’s called the Pentecost Sequence and it contains line after line that speaks about the gift of the Holy Spirit. It describes the Spirit as Lord of Light, Father of the Poor, Best Consoler, Sweet Comfort, Healer, Giver of Strength, Renewer, etc. I n today’s Gospel Jesus says he will ask the Father to send the “Advocate”. We tend to think of an advocate as someone who campaigns on a particular topic: an advocate for equal rights or an advocate for better housing conditions. In fact, the word advocate really means someone whom you call to stand by your side in solidarity. It’s the equivalent of the other strangesounding word, Paraclete. Pentecost rounds off Jesus’ saving work on earth as the Spirit completes the action of Jesus in taking on our humanity and humanising it to the point where it can glimpse the divine. What we see happening at that first Pentecost is that Jesus has not left us alone like and nation. S omeone once said that we should pray as if everything depended on God but act as if everything depended on us. Certainly this is true of the Spirit. We are only too aware of our weakness and our inability to “go it alone” when it comes to living out our faith and telling others about it. That’s why we pray constantly for the outpouring of the Spirit in our lives, that we may be transformed, strengthened, inspired and supported in our orphans; he has sent the Christian lives. Holy Spirit, the Advocate, to ne thing that we canbe by our side. And the not do is to restrict effects are immediate. From being a frightened the Spirit. If we ask for the bunch of weak men, hud- Advocate then we agree to dled for safety behind a an adventure in faith that locked door, the apostles has no boundaries. After are transformed by the all, we call on the Spirit just Spirit’s presence, are em- to make us feel good; we boldened to go out and ask for the Spirit to come confront their fears, pro- and transform creation: claiming their faith in Christ Lord, send out your Spirit to people from every race and renew the face of the earth! A record amount due both to increased Gift Aid donations and also some changes in HMRC rules. This 'free money' certainly helped offset the cost of running the parish and carrying out the recent improvements to the church and parish hall. Over the next few weeks, Mike Bunting will be in the church porch with the new envelopes for those signed up for the scheme and if there are any existing or new parish members who pay tax and would like to join then he has the forms and can answer any questions that you may have.
