Transformations Happen at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis
Welcome to a transformative summer
at The Children’s Museum! In line with
our mission to create extraordinary
family learning experiences that have
the power to transform lives, we offer
two new exhibits—Terra Cotta Warriors:
The Emperor’s Painted Army and Take
Me There:® China. Both provide unique
insights into Chinese culture, ancient
and modern.
Take Me There: China examines life
in contemporary China, with its
fascinating mix of modernization and
tradition. Children and families can
explore family homes, Chinese arts,
the marketplace, the environment
(represented by China’s efforts to
conserve a much-loved national symbol,
the Giant Panda), and more. The exhibit
also allows us to connect with our local
community: many of Central Indiana’s
10,000 Chinese residents provided
artifacts, assistance, and advice as we
developed the exhibit.
Terra Cotta Warriors combines history,
archaeology, art, and science as it
explores the creation of the thousands
of clay figures buried near the tomb of
China’s first emperor more than 2,200
years ago. It is the only exhibit featuring
the warriors in the United States in 2014.
Transforming Lives
Transformational Support
The museum recently received the
National Service Medal from the
Institute of Museum and Library
Services for our longstanding
commitment to transforming lives
through community service. Such
programs as Access Pass and
Neighborhood Club, and our
enthusiastic participation in initiatives
such as the Mid-North Neighborhoods
Quality of Life Plan, led to a White
House ceremony on May 8 at which
First Lady Michelle Obama presented
the prestigious award.
Finally, none of these extraordinary
transformations would be possible
without the support of our generous
donors. Terra Cotta Warriors:
The Emperor’s Painted Army is presented
by Eli Lilly and Company Foundation.
Take Me There: China is made possible
by lead gifts from Lilly Endowment, Inc.,
Eli Lilly and Company Foundation,
The Lilly Family, Mrs. Yvonne Shaheen,
Sarah and John Lechleiter, the U.S.
Institute for Museum and Library
Services, Jane and Steve Marmon,
Susan and Jim Naus, and Polly Hix,
with additional support from the
Confucius Institute. And our community
initiatives, like our day-to-day operations,
are supported by the thousands of
donors who contribute to the Children’s
Museum Fund.
The museum also took part in another
Washington, D.C., ceremony earlier in the
year when 8-year-old museum member
Spencer Hahn was named one of two
Great American Museum Advocates by
the American Alliance of Museums.
Spencer’s extraordinary story—
detailed on page 19—is of a life
literally transformed by his experiences
at The Children’s Museum.
One more honor I’d like to highlight is
the fact that The Children’s Museum
was named Best Family Museum in
the nation by the readers of USA Today.
Thank you to all who voted for us. It’s
further proof that our commitment to
presenting transformative family
learning experiences has a lasting impact.
To all whose support made these exhibits
and programs possible: xiè xiè (thank
you)! Your generosity transforms ideas
into extraordinary realities.
Terra Cotta Warriors: The Emperor’s Painted Army, directly from China’s Shaanxi Province
A Boy King Becomes China’s First Emperor
Everyone knows the story of the boy king! He was Tutankhamun, who became
pharaoh of Egypt when he was just 9 years old. He died 10 years later and was buried in a
tomb filled with gold and riches. He’s THE boy king, right?
Not so fast! It’s time to tell you the story of another, even more
powerful boy king—Zhao Zheng, who took the throne of the
ancient kingdom of Qin when he was just 13. He took power at
a time when his own kingdom and six others were constantly
at war. Over time Zhao Zheng defeated them all and united them into a single empire.
Then he changed his name to Qin Shi Huang, which means “first emperor of Qin.”
Pronounced “chin,” Qin is the forerunner of the word China. And for the next 2,000 years,
China’s rulers would bear the title of emperor.
An Underground Army
Soon after taking the throne of Qin in 246 B.C., the future emperor ordered the building of
a huge tomb complex to be his home in the afterlife. His tomb has not yet been excavated,
but an ancient Chinese text offers one tale of its splendor—rivers flowing with mercury,
palace replicas, and the re-creation of Xianyang, the capital where the first emperor lived.
He also ordered the creation of a life-size army made of terra cotta (baked clay) to protect
him in the afterlife. His Terra Cotta Warriors were placed in vast underground pits
surrounding the tomb mound. For 2,200 years they lay forgotten—a secret—
until they were accidentally discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well.
Jeffrey H. Patchen
President and CEO
Chinese archaeologists were quickly notified of the discovery, which was
the first of 2,000 warriors figures to be unearthed so far, representing
about one-fourth of the estimated 8,000 warriors that guard the tomb!

The Real Warriors Arrive!
The Emperor’s Painted World
You are probably familiar with the warriors from
National Geographic Treasures of the Earth, which
features several replica soldiers representing the
emperor’s Terra Cotta Army in the museum’s permanent
exhibit about three world-class archaeological sites.
See a bronze replica of the emperor’s chariot.
In addition to telling the story of China’s first emperor and his
underground army, the exhibit explores the science being
used to study the original brilliant pigments that once
adorned the warriors, helping us envision how the Terra
Cotta Army originally appeared.
Now REAL Terra Cotta Warriors—ambassadors of
the emperor’s underground world—are featured at The Children’s Museum in the exhibit Terra
Cotta Warriors: The Emperor’s Painted
Army, directly from China’s Shaanxi
Province, May 10 through Nov. 2. Eight
warrior figures from the burial site in Xi’an,
China are among more than 100 ancient
artifacts featured in the exhibit including
ceramics, bronzes, and pieces in precious gold. It
will be the warriors’ only appearance in the U.S. in 2014, and
the first time that the warriors have ever been exhibited in a
children’s museum.
The Terra Cotta Warriors
Meet Today’s Technology!
Interactive technologies
to help you explore
the warriors:
Problems arose from the very beginning. Within minutes
of exposure to air, any pigments remaining on an unearthed
warrior would flake away. In recent years, scientists have
developed techniques to preserve pigments on newly
excavated warriors. The exhibit features one warrior head
with a significant amount of pigment (though faded) still
apparent, offering an extremely rare opportunity to see a
painted warrior outside of China.
1. Virtually “paint” a Terra
Cotta Warrior, general,
horse, or cavalryman,
or swan.
Strike the bell in the
exhibit area devoted to
the emperor’s musicians.
An Interactive Experience
Terra Cotta Warriors: The Emperor’s Painted Army features
a variety of hands-on interactives to engage children and
families in the science and artistry of the warriors. Visitors
can virtually paint warriors and horses, enjoy pretend play
dressed as warriors, mold their own miniature clay warriors,
sculpt warrior faces, and more.

It’s Time for
Take Me There: China!
Ní hăo! It’s time to say “hello” in Mandarin—China
has come to The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis
in the new exhibit Take Me There:® China.
As museum members you no doubt remember the
popular exhibit Take Me There: Egypt, the first in our
series of in-depth explorations of contemporary life
in a single world culture. Take Me There: China
delivers the same fun and family learning with new
immersive experiences focused on life in the world’s
most populous country! Here are a few of the many
exciting things to see and do in Take Me There: China.
“Touch Down” in Beijing
“Fly” aboard a modern Chinese airliner and see iconic
Chinese sites like the Great Wall and the Forbidden
City before touching down in Beijing to begin your
journey through China.
Meet Jackie Wang and His Family!
Explore the re-created living spaces of four
generations of a real Chinese family—the Wangs.
Jackie, 11, and his parents live in a modern urban
high-rise apartment. His grandparents live in a

The Power Of Giving
Dave Lawrence, president and CEO of the Arts Council
of Indianapolis, praised the museum’s contributions to the
city’s cultural community, as well as its commitment to serve
the community’s youth through initiatives like the Museum
Apprentice Program and StarPoint Summer Camp.
Museum to Receive National Service Medal
In a ceremony scheduled on May 8 at the White House,
The Children’s Museum added to its long list of
accolades and awards when First Lady Michelle Obama
officially presented Jeffrey Patchen, the museum’s
president and CEO, with the prestigious National Medal
for Museum and Library Service.
Citing the museum’s key role in the formulation and
implementation of the Mid-North Neighborhoods Quality of
Life plan, Bill Taft, executive director of the Local Initiatives
Support Corporation, stated “this initiative has provided
strategies for creating and leveraging existing educational and
workforce development opportunities for the community.”
Awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library
Services (IMLS), the medal is the nation’s highest
honor for service to local communities by museums
and libraries. One of 10 institutions honored in 2014,
The Children’s Museum received the award for its
longstanding commitment to improving the quality
of life in the neighborhoods
surrounding the
museum, as well
as to raising the
profile of
Indianapolis as a
destination
for high-quality
cultural experiences.
But neighborhood resident Jowanna A. Peterson put the most
personal face on the museum’s
contributions to community.
She talked about “the awesome
atmosphere [at the museum] that
is so nurturing to families,” noting
how much it inspired her
daughter, who grew up volunteering at the museum.
“I cannot think of a more
deserving museum for such
an honor,” she wrote.
Transforming Lives:
Spencer Hahn and
The Children’s Museum
I
including his language center. Spencer
also had cerebral palsy and, Erica was
told, might never walk or be able to
process information normally.
Spencer was there with his mother,
Erica Hahn, and Jeffrey H. Patchen,
president and CEO of The Children’s
Museum, to be recognized by the
American Alliance of Museums
(AAM) as one of the nation’s two Great
American Museum Advocates of 2014.
But Erica decided that Spencer would
be the one to decide what he could
do. She began taking him to The
Children’s Museum every week.
“Provide children with an environment
where they feel happy and safe,” she
told those gathered in the Kennedy
Caucus Room, “and add to that
stimulation and milestone-building
museum adventures, and you
find success.”
n February, 8-year-old Spencer
Hahn, whom doctors had once
said would never walk or talk,
charmed a roomful of politicians
and museum professionals on Capitol
Hill in Washington, D.C., convincing
them of the transformational role that
museums can play in our lives.
It was honor that no one would have
expected Spencer to achieve given
the devastating diagnosis his mother
received when he was just nine months
old. He had suffered a stroke in utero
that destroyed the left side of his brain,
Defying Expectations
According to his mother, The Children’s
Museum provided Spencer with a safe
place to explore his abilities. He took his
first steps at the museum, proving he
could walk. And he said his first word—
“Mama”—while riding the Carousel.
The museum is where Spencer learned
about creativity through his newfound
love of theater. It is where he gained
confidence by leading more than 100
end-of-day parades. And it is where he
discovered the power of friendship by
interacting with the museum’s mascot,
Rex. The museum stimulated his brain,
Erica told the crowd, building neural
pathways where none existed.
In a letter to Patchen, Ford W. Bell,
AAM’s president, wrote that the Hahns’
visit was unforgettable. “It is a great
story about a wonderful mother who
never gave up, about a little boy whose
courage and determination are almost
unimaginable, and about a museum that
nurtured impossible dreams and then
helped them come true.”
Your Gift Changes Everything!
Eyes wide with excitement. Contagious smiles and laughter. Those unforgettable moments when new connections are made,
curiosity is sparked, and family memories are etched. This happens daily at The Children’s Museum, and lives are transformed.
“In Spencer’s case, The Children’s Museum
of Indianapolis literally changed his life
and the lives of his family. What better
public service can there be?”
—Ford W. Bell

Introducing
Terra Cotta Warriors: The Emperor’s
Painted Army features eight of the
world-renowned figures among more
than 100 ceramics, bronzes, and works
in gold from Shaanxi Province that invoke
the splendor of ancient China.
Eli Lilly and Company Foundation
Presents Terra Cotta Warriors Exhibit
An International Effort
Ever since farmers unearthed a
2,200-year-old, life-size clay soldier
near Xi’an, China, in 1974, the
Terra Cotta Warriors have been an
international sensation. With the
opening of Terra Cotta Warriors: The
Emperor’s Painted Army, directly from
China’s Shaanxi Province on May
10, The Children’s Museum will have
the distinction of being the only U.S.
museum to host the warriors in 2014.
There was a lot of work to do to
prepare for such a high-profile
opportunity. It started with a
coordinated effort among the museum,
Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s Terra Cotta
Army Museum in Xi’an, China, the
Shaanxi Cultural Heritage Promotion
Center, and the Shaanxi Provincial
Cultural Relics Bureau. Working in
partnership, the four institutions
created an exhibit custom-made
for its Indianapolis venue.
Eli Lilly and Company
Foundation Funding
Early on, The Children’s Museum
searched for a sponsor willing to
support such an important undertaking.
It found one close at hand. Recognizing
the exhibit’s educational and cultural
value, Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and
Company Foundation awarded the
museum a $1 million grant to help
present the exhibit.
“Education about the diverse cultures
that make up our world is essential,”
said Robert L. Smith, president of the
Eli Lilly and Company Foundation.
“Lilly is honored to be a lead sponsor
of this one-of-a-kind exhibit as we
know thousands will learn about the
extraordinary finds associated with
the Terra Cotta Warriors site. Members
of our Chinese Culture Network at
Lilly are particularly excited to see
this significant discovery spotlighted
in Indianapolis.”
Jeffrey Patchen, president and CEO
of The Children’s Museum, is equally
enthusiastic. “The Eli Lilly and
Company Foundation grant allowed us
to curate our own Terra Cotta Warriors
exhibit focusing on new research on
the way the warriors originally were
painted,” he said. “What’s more, for the
first time we are bringing the warriors
to the world’s largest museum for
children and families. All this was made
possible by the extraordinary support of
Eli Lilly Company Foundation.”
to the warriors and other artifacts, the
exhibit emphasizes the relationship
between cultural heritage and scientific
exploration. The flexibility that the
grant provided allowed museum staff
to visit the dig site in Xi’an, China to
see the interplay among historians,
artists, archaeologists, and scientists
working there.

for Families and Schools
Then, with the assistance of
international consultants, the museum
created an exhibit that, in addition to
its more than 100 ancient artifacts,
includes educational programs and
materials for school groups and families.
The funding is also making it possible to
offer free tours to an estimated 17,000

Have you ever wondered what it would be like
to be an astronaut?
Coming Soon—
Beyond
Spaceship
Earth!
The Children’s Museum is developing a
new exhibit that will allow you to have
out-of-this-world experiences without
ever leaving Earth’s surface! With the
help of a prestigious $675,000 award
from the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA), the museum will
create Curious Scientific Investigator (CSI):
Beyond Spaceship Earth, a multifaceted
exhibit based on living and working on the
International Space Station.
Scheduled to open in 2016, Beyond Spaceship Earth will combine artifacts,
interactive experiences, and hands-on
activities to connect spaceflight with the science, technology, engineering, and
math (STEM) disciplines that are key
to education today. Among the experts
consulting on the project is former NASA
astronaut and Purdue University alumnus
Dr. David Wolf, who is also the
museum’s first Extraordinary
Scientist-in-Residence.
“We will also bring to bear Indiana’s strong
history in spaceflight,” said Dr. Wolf,
“ranging from people and technology
development to science applications.”
“Young people are particularly captivated
by space exploration,” said Dr. Wolf, who
took part in four missions aboard the
International Space Station (ISS).
“The museum staff and I will develop
activities designed to ignite the passion
of our visitors in a way that’s useful
for whatever future they choose.”
Dr. Wolf’s involvement in the exhibit’s
planning and design ensures that it will be
accurate, said Becky Wolfe, the museum’s
science programs manager. “Very few
people have ever been to the Space Station;
we have someone helping us who has!”
What’s more, the exhibit will highlight the
fact that American astronauts continue to
be involved in Space Station missions, even
though NASA’s space shuttle program has
ended. To create the exhibit, the museum
is partnering with NASA’s Johnson Space
Center, Purdue University, the Indiana
Space Grant Consortium, and Space
Exploration Technologies Corporation
(SpaceX) to ensure access to scientific
findings, photographs, video, drawings,
and educational materials from manned
and unmanned space expeditions, both
past and ongoing.
What is it like
to live aboard the
International
Space Station?
To explore
outer space?
The exhibit will include four components:
• Early Inspirations and Early Missions, which will explore such influences on
astronauts as the history of human
flight and space-related toys from the ’60s to today.
• Inside the International Space Station, which will immerse visitors in a replica interior of the Space Station, including a research facility, food, clothing, and crew quarters, along with opportunities
to do some of the astronauts’ tasks.
• Through the Hatch, which will feature equipment and technology used on space walks.
• Outside the Airlock, which will
include the Russian spacesuit that
Dr. David Wolf wore during one of his four missions, as well as a partial recreation of a SpaceX capsule used
to ferry cargo to the Space Station.
“Our partnership with NASA will enable
the exhibit to capture the spaceflight
experience in a realistic and up-to-date
manner,” said Dr. Wolf. “This will allow us
to create a compelling perspective of the
magical experience of space exploration.”
The museum staff and I will
develop activities designed
to ignite the passion of our
visitors in a way that’s
useful for whatever future
they choose.
