Scouting Yale
Yale is led by former Husky head coach Chris Gobrecht. Gobrecht is the all-time winningest coach at 243-89,
leading the Huskies to nine NCAA Tournaments in her 11 years at UW. She won two Pac-10 titles, including
the 1989-90 team that went 28-3 and advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament. Yale fell in its season
opener to St. John’s, 61-50. The Bulldogs will play Holy Cross before heading to Seattle to take on the
Huskies. Senior guard Sarah Halejian led the team with 15 points against St. John’s. In the 2013-24 season,
the Bulldogs ended their season with a 13-15 record and finishing 7-7 in the Ivy League. Halejian was the
leading scorer as a junior last year.
Previous Matchups
Washington is facing both South Dakota and Yale for the first time. The Dawgs do have connections with
both teams, however. South Dakota assistant coach Tandem Mays was one of Husky head coach Mike
Neighbors' first big recruits when he was an assistant coach at Tulsa. Mays played for Neighbors with the
Golden Hurricane where she was a three-year starter and eventual team captain. Yale is coached by Chris
Gobrecht who is considered a huge region for the success of women's basketball in Seattle.
Huskies Fall In Opener
Washington fell, 90-80, in the season opener at Oklahoma. The Dawgs fell behind early 11-0 and failed to
ever fully come back, despite a couple runs. Trailing by as many as 18 in the second half, the Dawgs cut
the lead to six in the final minute, but could get no closer. Kelsey Plum scored 45 points to lead Washington,
while Talia Walton and Jazmine Davis had 12 each.
Pac-12 Player Of The Week
Husky guard Kelsey Plum was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the first time after scoring 45 points
in a 90-80 loss to Oklahoma. It was Plum's eighth all-time weekly honor from the Pac-12 after being named
Freshman of the Week seven times last year.
Record Performance
Kelsey Plum scored 45 points at Oklahoma on November 14, 2014 to break the 11-year-old Husky singlegame scoring record. Giuliana Mendiola scored 43 points against UCLA back in 2003 for the previous record.
The 45 points also ranks tied for sixth all-time for a single game in Pac-12 history and was a facility record at
Oklahoma's Lloyd Noble Center. Plum shot 15-27 from the floor, 3-7 from 3-point range and 12-12 from the
foul line. She also had five assists, four rebounds, three steals, two blocks and committed only one turnover.
What To Look For
Washington has three-straight 20-win seasons and trips to the WNIT. This season, the Dawgs will be looking
to take the next step to the NCAA Tournament. Washington returns four starters, including All-Pac-12 guards
Jazmine Davis and Kelsey Plum, which should be one of the most dynamic backcourts in the nation. The
Dawgs also return forwards Aminah Williams and Talia Walton, both two-year starters. The only loss to the
starting lineup is do-everything guard Mercedes Wetmore. The Dawgs scheduled a difficult non-conference,
including the opener at Oklahoma, followed by Florida State and Texas A&M later this winter. That combined
with the always difficult Pac-12 season and the Dawgs feel they can build the resume to return to the NCAA
Tournament.
2013-14 In Review
Washington was a bubble team down the stretch of the season after defeating then-No. 3 Stanford at home
and upsetting then-No. 18 California on the road. The late season push was abruptly ended in the first round
of the Pac-12 Tournament when 11th-seeded Utah upset the Huskies. The loss secured Washington's fate to
the WNIT where the Dawgs would advance to the quarterfinals and eventually fall at UTEP in a thrilling game
that went to the final horn.
Backourt Duo
A main reason for optimism is the return of the nation's second-highest scoring backcourt from a year ago
with Jazmine Davis and Kelsey Plum. Plum averaged 20.9 points per game on the way to setting UW and
Pac-12 freshman scoring marks with 712 points on the season. She was named Pac-12 Freshman of the
Year and was a Freshman All-American by several media outlets. Davis made it three-straight All-Pac-12
honors, averaging 18.8 points per game along her new running mate in the backcourt. Both guards return
this season, although it will be without the third part of the three-guard offense Mercedes Wetmore. All three
of Plum, Davis and Wetmore played nearly every minute of every game, meaning the Dawgs will need to
replace the minutes and production of Wetmore.

Frontcourt Depth
Washington also returns both starting forwards, including leading rebounder Aminah Williams and thirdleading scorer and top shot blocker Talia Walton. Williams again played well above her size, averaging 10.4
rebounds per game. Walton battled through injuries to average 11.1 points and 7.8 rebounds, while also
blocking 47 shots. The Dawgs also welcome back depth in the front court as Chantel Osahor and Katie Collier both gained valuable experience as freshmen. Osahor is the Huskies top passing post, while Collier has
now finally had a full offseason since illness and injury to reach her impact potential.
Newcomers
Washington welcomes four freshmen, while also seeing the return of Brianna Ruiz who redshirted her
freshman season due to injury. Ruiz will play on the wing where she'll adding shooting and athleticsm. Also
battling for minutes at that third guard spot will be true freshmen Kelli Kingma and Khalia Lark. Kingma is the
younger sister of Kristi Kingma and provides some of long-distance shooting of her sister, but is considered a
better athlete. Lark is a combo guard/forward that could also play right away. The other newcomers are post
Hannah Johnson, a rebounder and worker, along with walk-on point guard Mackenzie Wieburg.
Record Watch
Husky guard Jazmine Davis enters the 2014-15 season with a chance to rewrite the Husky record books.
Davis is already fourth on the all-time Husky scoring list with 1,752 points and is well above pace to set the
all-time record at UW. Jamie Redd currently holds the Husky record with 2,027 points set back in 1999. Davis
has scored over 500 points in each of her first three seasons, so another year of the that production would
put her well above the record. In addition to scoring, Davis is also on pace to break the Washington records
for field goals, field goals attempted, free throws, free throws attempted, 3-point field goals and 3-point field
goals attempted. Washington forwards Aminah Williams and Talia Walton are also on record watch this
season. Williams is approaching the all-time rebounding mark at UW after back-to-back historic seasons.
The senior is currently fourth on the all-time list with 835 rebounds after becoming just the second Husky to
post two-straight 350-rebound seasons. Washington’s all-time rebounding leader is Amber Hall with 1,003,
but that mark should fall with a healthy season from Williams. Walton is after the Washington shot blocking
record, which she is on pace to eclipse. The redshirt junior has 105 blocks in her career, while the record
belongs to Liz Chicane with 144. Walton surely will surpass the record with two seasons left at UW, but more
than likely it will happen this season.
Plum's Historic Season
Sophomore Kelsey Plum returns after a historic freshman season, leaving the question of how she could
get better. Last year, Plum set nearly every Husky freshman record, but also became Washington’s all-time
single-season scoring leader with 712 points. That mark was also a Pac-12 freshman record. Noted for her
work ethic, Plum appears to be improved again this season and should enter the All-America conversation.
Plum was a Freshman All-America last year, but could challenge for the main award with a successful season from the team. The loss of point guard Mercedes Wetmore could put more ball-handling duties on Plum,
but don’t expect her scoring to suffer. Plum averaged 20.9 points per game last season, including 81 made
3-pointers and a Husky single-season record of 203 free throws, while shooting nearly 85 percent.
2014 Pac-12 Honors
Jazmine Davis and Kelsey Plum earned All-Pac-12 honors with Plum being named the Pac-12 Freshman of
the Year. Davis became just the fourth Husky to earn First Team All-Pac-12 honors, joining Rhonda Smith,
Jamie Redd and Giuliana Mendiola. Plum was the third Husky to be named All-Pac-12 joining Davis in 2012
and Kared Deden in 1988. Also being honored were Mercedes Wetmore and Aminah Williams who were
named Pac-12 All-Defensive Team honorable mention.
2014 Pac-12 All-Academic
Mercedes Wetmore earned Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team honors for her work in the classroom. The
senior carries a 3.46 GPA as a communications major. Aminah Williams and Mithilde Gilling were also honored by the conference with honorable mention honors.
Pac-12 Tourney In Seattle
Seattle will once again be an epicenter of women’s basketball as the Dawgs have a great home schedule
this season, while the Pac-12 Tournament will be played at KeyArena for a third-straight year. The Pac-12
Tournament is set to begin on March 5 and will continue until the final on March 8. The Dawgs were unexpectedly ousted early from last year’s tournament and have yet to make a long run at the Pac-12 Tourney
since it has come to Seattle. Washington hopes 2015 will be the year to do just that in front of their home
fans.

Mike Neighbors enters his second season as the head coach at Washington and fourth
with the Huskies overall. He was promoted to head coach on April 21, 2013. He had
previously worked as the top assistant coach under Kevin McGuff for two seasons with
the Huskies.
In his first year at the helm of the Husky program, the 45-year-old Neighbors led the
Dawgs to a third-straight 20-win season and trip to the quarterfinals of the WNIT. Washington finished 20-14, including 10-8 in the Pac-12. The Dawgs defeated five teams that
were ranked at some point during the season, including an upset of then-No. 3 Stanford
at Alaska Airlines Arena in front of a nationally televised audience. The win ended the
58-game road conference winning streak of the Cardinal.
Neighbors oversaw the development of several individuals, inclduing Jazmine Davis
who was named All-Pac-12 First Team for the third consecutive season. She has a
chance to become the first four-time All-Conference player at UW, while also being on
pace to break the all-time scoring record. Neighbors also has continued to develop two other players on pace to
break major school records with Aminah Williams and Talia Walton projected to take down the school's rebounding
and blocked shots records this year.
In addition to the continued development of his returning players, Neighbors guided his prized recruit Kelsey Plum
to arguably the best season in Washington history. Plum set the single-season scoring record at UW with 712
points, while also earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and Freshman All-America honors from several news
outlets.
In his final year as an assistant, Neighbors helped the Huskies to a second-straight 20-win season and a return trip
to the WNIT. Washington finished 21-12, including 11-7 in the Pac-12, good for a fifth-place finish.
Neighbors worked with the team's guards, including Jazmine Davis who through two seasons has scored more
points than any Husky in school history. Neighbors is also regarded as one of the country's best defensive and
player-development specialists.
In his first year at UW, Neighbors assisted the Husky women to a 20-14 season and trip to the quarterfinals of the
WNIT. It was the first 20-win season for UW since 2002-03. Neigbors also saw the development of guard Jazmine
Davis, who was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year after averaging 15.7 points for the season.
Neighbors' accomplishments in women's basketball speak for themselves. He's helped sign eight McDonald's AllAmericans, seen eight of his players drafted in the WNBA, including three who have won WNBA Championships.
Everywhere Neighbors has coached, he's overseen the development of either the No. 1 or No. 2 all-time leading
scorer in program history. Neighbors is a regular speaker at coaching conventions and clinics around the nation,
and his weekly newsletter is popular with coaches at all levels.
Neighbors came to Seattle after four seasons at Xavier, where he worked with former Huskies coach Kevin McGuff.
During Neighbors' tenure in Cincinnati, he helped mold a Musketeers program that established itself as one of
the best in the nation. Neighbors was named one of basketballscoop.com's "Rising Stars" in 2009, an award that
recognizes assistant coaches who are some of the best in the business.
While at Xavier, Neighbors was a part of a coaching staff that produced some of the best seasons in school history.
During the 2009-10 season, the Musketeers posted a 30-4 record, including a flawless 14-0 season in Atlantic-10
Conference play. Xavier ended the season ranked No. 5 in the polls. In addition, Xavier advanced to the Elite Eight
of the NCAA Tournament.
In his final year at Xavier, Neighbors helped lead the program to a 29-3 record and an appearance in the NCAA
Tournament's Second Round. During his tenure at Xavier, Neighbors was part of a staff that compiled a 61-5 nonconference record (108-22 overall), captured three A-10 Tournaments, three A-10 Regular Season Champs, and
competed in four straight NCAA Tournaments.
Neighbors is also considered an excellent recruiter, and helped the Musketeers ink the No. 18 rated class of 2010
according to ESPN Hoopgurlz.
As the coach responsible for developing post players, Neighbors was instrumental in the growth of Amber Harris
and Ta'Shia Phillips, two of the best players in Musketeer history. Harris, a 6-5 forward, was a two-time State Farm
All-America selection and was drafted fourth overall by the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx. Meanwhile, Phillips was noted
as one of the premier defensive players in the nation. The 6-6 center was the leading rebounder in XU history, in
addition to her numerous national accolades.
Neighbors came to XU from the University of Arkansas, where he was an assistant coach for a season, his second
stint in Fayetteville. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Neighbors was an assistant coach at the University of
Colorado and the University of Tulsa, both under Kathy McConnell-Miller. In Boulder, Neighbors helped develop
the school's all-time leading scorer in Brittany Spears, a 2011 WNBA draft selection. At Tulsa, Neighbors was an
assistant on the up-and-coming Hurricane's program that enjoyed back-to-back postseason appearances.
A native of Greenwood, Ark., Neighbors received his bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas in 1993.
Following his graduation, Neighbors was a director of basketball operations for the women's basketball program,
serving under legendary coach Gary Blair, who won the NCAA Championship in 2011 with Texas A&M. Before
moving into the collegiate ranks, Neighbors was a highly successful head coach in the Arkansas girls' high school
ranks. His most notable achievement was taking a 1-24 Bentonville team to the State Championships two years
later.
Neighbors has two children, one daughter Abby (17) and a son Alec (11). He lives in Seattle.
