PHILA
The GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon is well on
its way to becoming America’s leading “green”
marathon.
This year we mark our 21st and usher in a new
decade of marathoning excellence with more than
30,000 people participating in the Full and Half
Marathon and the Rothman Institute 8K. The Kids
Fun Run returns to engage families in the healthy
fun of running and the Health & Fitness Expo
remains a one-stop destination for registration
and the source for all the gear and expert advice
necessary to maintain a running lifestyle.
This year, November 21 – 23, the GORE-TEX®
Philadelphia Marathon turns 21. In a lifetime,
the 21st year comes with positive connotations.
It’s a benchmark year that denotes a coming of
age, maturity, experience and self-confidence—
all characteristics intrinsic to the GORE-TEX®
Philadelphia Marathon—and Philadelphia’s love of
running continues to fuel our achievement.
In 2013, the Marathon made great strides. We
racked up a record-breaking cross-race registration
and secured a built-for-success partnership with
GORE-TEX® Running Footwear. We also “took home
the Gold” with Gold Certification awarded by the
Council for Responsible Sport in recognition of
our innovative and successful recycling initiative
produced in cooperation with the Mayor’s Office of
Sustainability and Waste Watchers volunteer corps.

We want you to experience all that our historic,
vibrant City of Brotherly Run and Sisterly Endurance
has to offer with this Official Race Guide and our
2014 Marathon Fan Pass to show you how—on
or off the course. Celebrate the GORE-TEX®
Philadelphia Marathon Weekend with us…we’re
turning 21 and you’re all guests of honor. Join me
and Mayor Michael Nutter for a first “high five” at
the start line and meet us just across the finish
line at the new GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon
Finisher Festival. We have a great race to celebrate!

Desiree Peterkin-Bell

FROM TH
As an event that hits the mark from start to finish,
I don’t think it gets any better than the GORE-TEX®
Philadelphia Marathon. In 2013, the inaugural
year of our partnership with GORE-TEX® as title
sponsor, the GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon
achieved a new level of performance excellence.
In 2014, we’re pushing off with that momentum to
propel us forward.
As one of the few city-owned and produced
marathons in the country, the GORE-TEX®
Philadelphia Marathon is held to a higher mission:
the Marathon must maintain Philadelphia’s
reputation as a compelling year-round running
destination; underscore the importance of running
as a healthy exercise for citizens; support benefit
programs for local and national charities—last
year 34 partner charities raised nearly $1.3
million for great causes; engage more than 3,000
volunteers to assist runners and spectators in
having a first rate Marathon experience; and
deploy thousands of Waste Watchers volunteers
to support an award-winning model recycling
program.
longstanding partnership with the outstanding
physicians of the world-renowned Rothman
Institute to safeguard their running health
throughout Race Weekend.
This year, we’re going for the gold again. The
Marathon has established a personal best in
sustainability practices that’s going to be hard to
beat but at 21, we’ve got the tools, the talent, the
experience and the drive to raise the “green race”
bar even higher.
Each year, the GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon
stages a panoramic showcase highlighting the
breath-taking beauty, proud history, and unrivaled
hospitality assets of this great City.
On behalf of the City of Philadelphia and the
hard-working administrators, staff, volunteers
and dedicated sponsors that help make the
GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon one of the
nation’s top ten races, have a great run, the very
best time, and come back to visit us again, soon
and often.
And, the more than 30,000 runners registered
in the Full and Half Marathons, the Rothman
Institute 8K and the Kids Fun Run can count on our
Sincerely,
Michael A. Nutter

MORE FOUNDATION uses a bottom-up approach to eradicating poverty by collecting used athletic shoes
on a large scale. A donation of 600 pairs of sneakers helps lift a family from poverty through the M.O.R.E.
(Modular Organic Regenerative Empowerment) program, a microenterprise model designed to increase small
farm productivity in the poorest rural farm areas in Africa. Last year, the GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon
was able to adopt families in Ghana, Africa by collecting 1,000+ pairs of gently used sneakers at the 2013
Health & Fitness Expo. We look forward to helping even more families this year. Bring Shoe Donations to
Booth #202 at the Health & Fitness Expo.

ABOUT THE gore-tex ® philadelphia marathon
COURSE INFORMATION
PhiladelphiaMarathon.com
The course is fast, with digital splits at the 10K, 13.1 mile and 30K marks. Hydration stations are set
up throughout the length of the course – as are spectator areas and Cheer Zones. Portable toilets
will be located at the start/finish area and at each hydration station.
The GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon, Half Marathon and Rothman Institute 8K are all certified by
the USATF and RRTC. The GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon
and a member of AIMS.
RULES
• Participants must follow and stay on the course.
• Unofficial entrants are not permitted on the course.
• Only runners, walkers and push-rim and handcycle wheelchairs are allowed on the course. All chairs
must be equipped with brakes, and wheelchair competitors must wear helmets and attach two
fluorescent flags (orange preferred) to the back of their chair, 6 feet high from the ground.
• No participants going backwards, animals, bicycles, baby strollers, baby joggers, roller skates,
scooters or skateboards allowed.
OUR HISTORY
• All participants must maintain at least a 16-minute per mile pace throughout the course.
• Bib numbers must be worn on the front of your shirt at all times, secured at all four corners.
The roots of the current GORE-TEX Philadelphia Marathon can be traced to 1954, the race’s
unofficial inaugural year. Those efforts were largely independent ventures, and the marathons
went by many different names: the Greater Philadelphia Independence Marathon (1981-82) and
the Fairmount Park Marathon (1988-89).
®
The Marathon, as we know it today, was established under the name of the Philadelphia Marathon in 1994
by the City of Philadelphia and a group of dedicated runners and physicians at the Rothman Institute.
In the past, the race was mainly a suburban event, but the new focus under the City of Philadelphia and
then-Mayor Edward Rendell was to shift the race to a course within the city limits and to showcase the
many assets of the city. In 2013, GORE-TEX® joined The Philadelphia Marathon as title sponsor during the
race’s 20th anniversary year.
The Philadelphia Marathon started out modestly with approximately 1,500 participants. In 2014, over
30,000 people will take part in our races.
• Timing device must be worn as instructed to ensure accurate results (see Page 33).
• SAG Vehicles will rove the course and be located at water stops. Please go to a water stop when you
want to board a SAG vehicle.
• Participants agree to follow the instructions of race, medical and police officials.
• Participants in violation of these rules will be disqualified and removed from the course.
COMPLETING ANOTHER DISTANCE
Registered runners will be officially timed in the event for which they registered OR any shorter
distance. You will wear your originally-assigned bib and receive the appropriate shirt for that
original event. We will use the times recorded by your score tag as you cross each timing mat in
the shorter event to calculate your time. Participants who run a distance that is longer than their
registered event will NOT be included in the official results.
Today, the Marathon remains true to one of its founding goals of promoting health and fitness. Over
the years, we have developed a Health & Fitness Expo and a noncompetitive Kids Fun Run to add to the
experience.
Over the years, the Marathon has experienced many changes. One thing remains the same: The
Philadelphia Marathon is the race of choice for many participants.

COURSE INFORMATION

TIME LIMIT
RUNNER TRANSPORT (SAG)
The time limit for the Marathon is seven hours (7:00). The time limit for the Half Marathon course
is three hours and 30 minutes (3:30). For safety purposes, participants not maintaining at least a
16-minute-mile pace will be asked to use sidewalks/paths along the course.
SAG will provide a ride to the medical tent in the start/finish area near 22nd Street & Benjamin Franklin
Parkway, and emergency medical responders will attend to any medical needs.
If Full Marathon participants have not reached the 13.1 mile mark within 3 hours and 30 minutes from
the start line, they will be directed to finish at the half marathon finish line.
EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION
Write your full name, emergency contact information and any allergies or health conditions you have
on the back of your race bib. Please be sure to print information clearly.
WEATHER
The race weekend falls within an especially beautiful time of year, with autumn well underway and
temperatures averaging around 45°F/7.2°C at start time and about 54°F/12°C at the finish.
RACE SCORING & TIMING
KELLY DRIVE MEDICAL MARKERS
This year’s races, the GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon, Half Marathon and Rothman Institute 8K,
will utilize the Chronotrack B-Tag—a single use bib tag—to record each runner’s official time. In order
to receive an accurate time, please make sure your bib is:
If you have to call 911 to report an incident while on Kelly Drive, look for the medical marker signs to
relay your location to emergency responders.

RACE DAY PREP & INFO
Before the race
PhiladelphiaMarathon.com
Dress for success. Race day isn’t for experiments, so wear your tried and trusted gear – not something
new. Dress in layers. If you plan on wearing a “throwaway” shirt, toss it into the receptacles marked for
clothing to the left of the corrals. All discarded clothing will be donated. If you decide to bring extra
clothing, pack it in your runner bag and check it into the UPS gear check trucks in Eakins Oval.
Race day is more than just the race itself. It’s also about what you
can do leading up to the start that will allow you to have a great
experience throughout the entire 26.2 mile, 13.1 mile or 8K distance.
BEFORE THE RACE
Pick up your bib number and race packet. There is no race day bib number pick up. Race packets can be
picked up at the Health & Fitness Expo on Friday (Noon to 9:00 p.m.) or Saturday (10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.).
Visit the start area and Marathon/Half Marathon split. If you are driving, you’ll want to map your route
and select a parking location in advance (partial list on Page 37). The 23rd Street entrances from Route
676 will be closed, so please plan an alternate route. If you are staying in one of the 8,000 hotel rooms in
Center City, do a test walk from the hotel to the start line. Your pre-race visit to the start area is also a
great time to run the famed “Rocky” steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and take a picture with the
Rocky statue!
Review your corral placement. Participants will be started in waves by color corrals (map on Page 28)
to reduce any bottlenecks. Your wave corral will be walked to the start line, and once the horn for your
color sounds, you can take off! Please bring any corral placement issues to the Solution Center at the Health
& Fitness Expo.
Eat a good meal. The GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon is excited to offer runners many delicious
dining options through Choose Your Course – a partnership with some of Philly’s best restaurants, which
allows participants to experience the city and carbo-load before the big race on Saturday, November 22.
A list of participating restaurants and their menu offerings, along with reservation information can be
found on our website, www.PhiladelphiaMarathon.com, and at the Health & Fitness Expo.
Review the 2014 security procedures. Be sure to read over all of the details and view an enhanced start/
finish area map on Pages 40 and 41. Only clear bags will be allowed in the Secure Zone - this applies to
runners and spectators.
34
gore-tex® philadelphia marathon 2014 race guide
Join our pre-race stretch. A pre-stretch hosted by lululemon athletica is designed so you can easily
drop in for a few minutes on your way to gear check and the start line. The pre-stretch will be offered
before the GORE-TEX® Marathon/Half Marathon (Sunday) from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. on the grassy part
(southwest corner) of Eakins Oval. Drop your bags at the gear check. Only clear bags will be allowed inside the race area on the Ben Franklin
Parkway. Gear check is provided free of charge to all race participants near the start line in Eakins Oval
beginning at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 22 and 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 23. UPS gear
trucks will be in alphabetical order by last name. Only clear bags will be accepted, and your bib number
is required to drop off and pick up your runner bag. The GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon is not
responsible for any lost or stolen items.

Plan your post race. The start/finish area map in this guide (Pages 26 & 27) will help you select a
meeting place with your family and friends. Landmark fountains, museums and hotels surround the
finish area, so there are plenty of places to meet up. Free massages are available for race participants
in the heated tent near 21st Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Be sure to check out our new
Finisher Festival, which includes the family meeting area, food trucks, music, merchandise and more!

Enjoy the sights of Philadelphia along the course. LOVE Park, City Hall, Ben Franklin’s burial site,
Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the Philadelphia Zoo, Boathouse Row, the “Rocky” steps and more
are within the first 13.1 miles. The final half of the Marathon will take you along Kelly Drive, through

Recycle and compost. Water bottles are being recycled in blue bins. Heatsheets® are being recycled in
marked bins. Cups, as well as banana and orange peels are compostable in yellow bins. Excess clothing
should be discarded on the outside left edge of the corral so it can be collected and donated following

Stay hydrated. One of the most important steps for runners to take on race day is to properly hydrate,
both before and during the race. On Sunday, take advantage of the pre-race water located in Eakins Oval
near the UPS gear check trucks, as well as the water, Gatorade and CLIF GELS available at hydration
stations throughout the course (see full list of hydration stations on Page 39).

FOR THE LOVE OF RUNNING
PhiladelphiaMarathon.com
competed in well over 100 marathons. Arthur Scott, of Charlotte, NC, is reaching a major milestone, as
the 2014 Philly race marks his 50th marathon. Chip Bearden, of New York, has run 17 total Philadelphia
Marathons, but not consecutively (illness and injury broke his streak). Kudos to our LEGacies who give
true meaning to the word marathon!
If you qualify, we encourage you to inquire about our LEGacy Runner’s Club. Celebrate your
achievements and connect with the GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon family.
MAYOR’S HIGH FIVE AWARD
A LOOK AT SOME OF OUR PHILADELPHIA MARATHON
LEGACY RUNNERS
There is a special group of runners who have been with our marathon every (or
nearly) step of the way. They belong to the LEGacy Runner’s Club, which is based
on the concept that this is not a sprint but a marathon! They are road warriors.
Our LEGacy runners, informally known as “LEGacies,” represent a perfect union
of loyal GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon participants who have competed in at
least 15 of our marathons.
In 2014, Maria Schaller and Jesse Robbins join Bob Koen, Mark Sullivan, Arthur Scott and Joseph
“Chip” Bearden in the LEGacy Runner’s Club. Bob and Mark have both run all 20 (now 21) GORE-TEX®
Philadelphia Marathons, Arthur has completed 18, and Chip has finished 17.
Jesse and Maria enter our honor roll as participants in 19 of our marathons. The low-key Schaller, 68
of Philadelphia, is a historical tourism guide who knows how to make a little bit of history herself as
our first female LEGacy runner. Her brother Frank inspired her to start running decades ago, and she
has not stopped since. Jesse, 55, a construction manager, is a Bordentown, NJ resident who boasts
3:40 as one of his best times in 1996.
For the last several years, Mayor Michael A. Nutter has been a fixture at the GORE-TEX® Philadelphia
Marathon start line, high-fiving runners as the set out on the 26.2 mile course. This year, the fifth
annual Mayor’s High Five Award will be given to an outstanding participant whose journey to the start
line on Sunday, November 23, is as much of a success as crossing the finish line. Mayor Nutter announces the High Five Award recipient at our Race Weekend kick-off press conference,
and acknowledges him/her at the Philadelphia Marathon start line on the morning of Sunday,
November 23.
“The High Five Award adds to the race
excitement by honoring the training and
hard work it takes for participants to get
to the competition,” said Mayor Nutter.
“That might mean overcoming obstacles,
running for a loved one, raising money for
charity, or some other accomplishment.”
Past High Five Award Winners:
•2010: Kathleen Wrigley
•2011: Jude Dinan
•2012: Kim Pohas
•2013: John Ciccione
These newcomers join our other LEGacy Runner’s Club members who are fixtures at the GORETEX® Philadelphia Marathon each year. Bob Koen was born in Philly and now lives in Cherry Hill,
NJ. His Philadelphia Marathon best was 3:41 in 1995. Bob’s LEGacy colleague is Mark Sullivan, of
Freeburg, PA. Mark, a graphic designer and illustrator who went to art school in Philadelphia, has

GORE-TEX ® PHILADELPHIA MARATHON’S STEPS
TOWARD SUSTAINABILITY
With the GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon exceeding 30,000 competitors, 60,000 spectators and 3,000
volunteers, we are also increasing our sustainability efforts. Thanks to you, we are at a 86% diversion rate
and climbing
HELP MAKE THIS A MORE SUSTAINABLE EVENT BY:
• Recycling cardboard and plastics on the course.
• Throwing your cups in composting bins set up along the route.
• Recycling your Heatsheet®, which is made of metalized polyester film.
• Using public transportation to get around Philadelphia.
SOME OF THE EARTH-SAVING STEPS WE ARE TAKING BEHIND THE SCENES:
• Encouraging runners to register online.
• Using 100% recycled paper and eco-friendly inks in Race Weekend materials.
• Eliminating the use of Styrofoam throughout the event.
• Using formaldehyde-free, nontoxic alternative to traditional chemicals in portable toilets on site.
• Stocking all portable toilets with recycled toilet paper.
• Recycling excess runners’ medals and bags.
• Recycling discarded runners’ clothes at the start line, filling more than 200 55-gallon bags.
• Donating excess food products such as water and/or runners’ snacks to local shelters, charitable
organizations, recreation programs, school groups and other competitive race organizations.
• Monitoring course and emergency functions primarily through the use of bicycles, scooter units,
and ATV’s, minimizing the carbon footprint as compared to fuel-guzzling vehicles and ambulances.
In 2013, the GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon earned Gold Certification from
the Council For Responsible Sport for our sustainability efforts.
