There has been so much proactive and valuable work going on at Rouge Valley in recent weeks that I felt compelled to update you about it today. We got off to the right start in our Ebola preparedness by putting several measures in place well before the province introduced directives for Ebola preparedness in mid-October. Management has been providing regular updates to our Board on Ebola since April 2014. You will be glad to know that the following safety protocols and actions have been put into place at both our Ajax campus and our Centenary campus in Scarborough: • Ongoing training of staff and physicians since late July on Ebola protocols, including new personal protective equipment; • Educating staff through internal bulletins, Town Hall meetings and other communications; • Proactive ordering of the latest personal protective equipment to Page 4 ensure we have effective equipment in sufficient quantity to prevent transmission of the disease when and if it arrives at our hospitals; • Creation of an Ebola public information webpage on October 3rd, which is updated regularly; and • Establishment of an Incident Command Centre on October 15th consisting of hospital leaders, who meet daily to discuss Ebola preparedness. This collection of strategies will help keep our patients, visitors, staff, physicians and midwives safe. Emergency preparedness has also been a major theme for us in other ways. The most clear and recent example of this occurred on Monday, October 20th, when 192 residents of Whitby’s Fairview Lodge were safely evacuated following a fire. The Region of Durham and the Central East Local Health Integration Network quickly assembled local health care leaders to help with this community crisis. We were pleased to be able to offer assistance without hesitation. By late afternoon on Monday we had created and staffed designated units at each of our campuses ready to accept Fairview Lodge residents who arrived later that evening. We are currently looking after 27 residents: 16 of them at our Ajax campus; and 11 of them at our Centenary campus. I’m proud to say that Rouge Valley has accepted more residents than any other hospital in the Central East LHIN. The Region of Durham and the Central East LHIN are to be commended for the excellent work in the sudden evacuation and transition of residents – from our perspective; it went quite well given the urgent circumstances. We also recognize the tremendous efforts of the Whitby Abilities Centre, St. John the Evangelist Church, Lakeridge Health, Ontario Shores and area long-term care and retirement homes such as The Village of Taunton Mills, which itself has been accommodating many residents since the fire. As community volunteers, the Board members are very proud of the work of our staff, physicians, midwives and volunteers at our two hospital campuses. We also believe that we have For Advertising Information please call: 905.420.4123 or 416.779.2523 exceptional community partners and elected leaders, and are inspired by the community members who have stepped forward to donate essentials and bring comfort the Fairview residents who have lost so much. We will continue to update you on matters of critical interest and look forward to continuing our collaborative work with you. Warm regards Joan M. Don’t be afraid to plan a sit-down dinner. A beautiful buffet will make the evening just a little less stressful – and the right décor and serving dishes can enhance even the most elegant affair. Also consider a little something special for each guest at your table to make them feel welcome. Favourites include party crackers, ornaments or mini-wreaths at each place setting. If you’re more of a mingler and want to extend the invitation to a larger group, go for a come-and-go cocktail party. Start by ensuring that you have enough stemware for all of the guests, easy access to food on a variety of serving dishes and plates of festive appetizers for snacking. Then it’s time to have some fun at the bar. Make everything look super-special by investing in a glamorous tray, and don’t forget bar accessories, such as a cocktail shaker, ice bucket with tongs, festive towels, bottle opener and jigger. Set the mood with seasonal fragrances No matter your party style, the perfect holiday candle, with names like Apple Crisp, Holiday Forest and Silver Snow, all from Pier 1 Imports, will get guests into the spirit as soon as they walk in the door. Don’t be a party procrastinator The more you plan ahead of time, the more likely you will be able to enjoy your holiday party with ease. Start picking out and setting up decorations at least a week ahead of time. If you space the tasks out, you won’t be racing against the clock on the actual day. Support a local business with your holiday shopping “Our neighbourhoods are full of small businesses that give our communities their unique character,” explains François Ramsay, senior vice-president, corporate affairs, at Yellow Pages. “Every purchase from a local merchant has a direct impact on the surrounding neighbourhood. We take neighbourhood vitality and prosperity to heart at Yellow Pages. That’s why we believe it’s important to support small businesses across the country and simplify their interactions with their community.” Not only do they make life easier with their product offering and their proximity, as well as contribute to the overall growth of the Canadian economy, Ramsey points out that these local businesses also enhance the vitality of their specific SUDOKU INTERMEDIATE SUDOKU CHALLENGING S U DOKU ANSWERS SUDOKU EASY 2 8 1 4 7 5 1 5 6 4 3 9 6 8 9 2 7 3 7 6 9 5 6 4 5 1 3 9 3 8 2 7 2 6 3 7 8 7 2 9 8 1 8 5 1 4 2 5 9 7 3 4 1 8 4 5 6 4 1 2 6 9 3 YOUR COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER Page 12 1 8 9 2 6 4 5 9 4 3 7 6 2 1 3 7 8 5 1 3 8 9 9 4 6 3 5 2 7 1 8 7 3 4 2 9 4 6 6 5 1 8 4 8 9 2 7 1 2 5 3 6 5 7 5 4 6 2 2 7 1 5 8 6 9 4 9 1 5 6 3 5 8 7 7 2 4 3 6 3 7 1 4 8 3 9 1 9 2 8 Advertising doesn’t have to be expensive… just EFFECTIVE! 7 8 3 2 1 9 5 6 4 7 9 2 8 5 3 4 6 7 9 1 5 6 2 8 1 3 4 3 6 1 5 8 2 5 1 2 8 3 9 8 7 6 7 4 3 7 2 9 1 1 4 3 5 8 6 5 4 7 2 3 1 9 4 9 5 7 6 9 4 8 6 2 4 6 1 5 9 2 6 8 2 9 7 3 8 4 3 1 5 7 Download your current issue at: www.retailpages.ca For pricing information email us at: rates@retailpages.ca For Advertising Information please call: 905.420.4123 or 416.779.2523 neighbourhoods. Whether for gifts, clothing, decorations, alcohol or food, it is estimated that in 2013 households spent an average of $1,800 in preparing for these few days of festivities.
