Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish • 2
The Advent season that begins today is a joyful time of anticipation, a season in which Christians relive liturgically the long Old
Testament period. For some two thousand years the chosen people awaited the culmination of God’s salvation, the coming of the
Messiah. An ideal figure to represent the people of the Old Testament is the prophet Isaiah. By definition, a prophet is one called
by God to speak the mind of God to the prophet’s contemporaries. That is exactly what Isaiah did. He guided this people through
one of their most critical periods (742-701 B.C.) The prophet and
his disciples have produced one of the greatest inspired booksone that is also a literary masterpiece.
Today’s reading from Isaiah is most appropriate for all followers
of Jesus Christ as we begin the season of Advent. Advent is a joyful season precisely because it manifests God’s great love for us,
being willing to send the Son into the world as our savior. Advent
should also be a time of reflection on our relationship to God, to
the incarnate Son. The Gospel of Mark tell us today to be vigilant
as we await the coming of Christ- his first coming at Christmas
and his second coming at the end of human history. Isaiah suggests how we can be vigilant. We should admit, first of all, that we
are sinners. “Behold, you are angry, and we are sinful; /all of us
have become like unclean people, / all our good deeds are like
polluted rags” (Isaiah 64:4-5).
Secondly, we should listen to Isaiah and turn to God and beg divine merciful forgiveness. In dramatic fashion the prophet says,
“Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, / with the
mountains quaking before you” (63:19). The prophet’s plea to
God relies on the fact that God is our father: “Yet, O Lord, you are
our father; /we are the clay and you the potter: / we are all the
work of your hands” (64:7). Advent is a special opportunity for all
to turn to God, admitting sinfulness but with great trust in the
loving forgiveness of God our father.
Dios nuestro padre.

Stewardship Reflection
“Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the
time will come.” - Mark 13:33
We all take things for granted. In particular, we take time for
granted. Our lives are so busy, many of us are planning our time
- our days, weeks, months, even years in advance. Remember,
our time on earth is a gift. None of us knows how long we will be
here. Start today and begin thanking God for each and every day.
Take time in silence, everyday, and listen to what God is saying
to you.

OLGC GIVING TREE
It is the Advent season and once again the OLGC Giving Tree
at OLGC are decorated with brightly colored ornaments. It
has been tradition here at OLGC to help those in need,
especially at this time of year.
Please take an ornament tag from the tree.
Purchase a new gift for the person listed on the tag.
Do not wrap the present and attach the tag.
Keep the ornament.
Return the gift to Church December 20th. & 21st.
The tags are coded to go to a specific person and it is important that these tags be taped to the outside of the present, so that
it will get to the proper person.
Many of you in the past have been very generous in taking tags
from the tree, but if you are new to OLGC or just haven’t taken a
tag in the past, won’t you consider taking just one of the tags and
returning a gift. One tag can make a big difference in the success
of this tradition.
Extras gifts and gift cards are always appreciated and should be
marked with appropriate age and gender.
Thank you for your continued generosity, and for sharing your
gifts with another during this Advent season.

“The courage and grace shown by those women who choose
life—in the face of fear, uncertainty, parental or partner
intimidation, seemingly insurmountable odds—make them
today's heroes. They are joined by the many who counsel,

of their child. Such self-giving love…is powerfully transformative of mother, of child, of families, of cultures.”

Vocations Corner by Rev. Keith Romke
Growing in Virtue
One of the best ways to grow in holiness and in our ability both to
recognize and to follow God’s will, is to strive to grow in virtue.
This of course may seem like an obvious statement, but allow me
to explain it a little deeper. Virtue can be defined as “Habituated
good action.” In other words, virtue is a good action that has
been chosen and performed over and over to the point that it
becomes habitual or second nature. This then allows us to just
naturally act in such a way that would please God, sometimes
without even being all that tempted to turn the wrong way simply
because the good action has been engrained in us. Virtue is a
really good thing! Here comes the hard part: performing the actual habituating! In order for something to become a habit it has
to be something that we do over and over and over again. Thus,
growing in virtue begins with saying Yes to God and His will in
lots of little things, because it helps us practice and engrain how
to say yes. If on the other hand we frequently let little opportunities to serve or please God go by, simply because they seem insignificant, guess what we’re in fact doing? We’re habituating saying No. This is never a good thing. So, if you want to grow in virtue and in your ability to say yes to God’s ultimate plan for your
life, begin by saying yes in little ways today so that you can continue to grow in virtue!
2015 Guide Book & Directory
Advertising Opportunity
We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the Church. This book will be the Who, What,
Where, When, Why and How of our Congregation. The
book is being provided at no cost to our Church, including the
mailing to each family, and again is being subsidized by local
businesses that advertise in it. If you own or manage a business
and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please
call the Church Office.
Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1%
of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our
new Guide Book & Directory.
