28TH NOVEMBER 2014 - Goulburn Valley Grammar School

-
28TH NOVEMBER 2014
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Student Leaders 2015
The school is rapidly approaching the end of the 2014 year. The Class of 2014 have departed the school and moved onto the next stage
in their lives. The Class of 2015 are now the most senior students in the school and we look to them to lead the school.
Our firm belief is that all our Year 12 students are leaders. The example they set, the standards they model will influence our younger
students. It is through them that the school culture and values are expressed and reinforced. During the Early Commencement
Programme, the Class of 2015 accepted the responsibility of being senior student leaders of the school. They have already commenced
leading some school activities including coordinating and running the HUG fundraising day, managing the Tuckshop queue and
supporting Orientation Day.
While all our Year 12 students are leaders, a number of students are appointed to the official leadership positions of House Captains,
Prefects and School Captains. Students are selected for these positions regarding their potential to model a positive example to the
school and to complete the duties and expectations of each specific role.
A rigorous selection process was used to appoint students to these positions. The process is completed confidentially by a selection
panel. The selection panel was comprised of Mr McLeod – Deputy Principal, Ms Lawless – Director of Students, Mr McDonald – Director
of Co-Curricular and Mrs Pohlner – Year 12 Coordinator.
During today’s assembly we introduced our 2015 House Captains and Prefects to the student body. A formal Leaders Induction assembly
will occur early in 2015. We congratulate the following students and look forward to their positive leadership in 2015.

Recent School Events
Since last Friday, a number of significant events have occurred at the school. On Saturday, we welcomed back the Class of 2009 for
their 5 year reunion. The Class have remained in close contact since they departed the school. We were delighted with the attendance
with over 50 of their cohort attending the reunion. They are a lovely group of young people, many of whom are already making an impact
in a diverse range of fields.
The Junior Concert was held on Wednesday evening. The performances from our youngest musicians were wonderful with many exciting
and talented musicians entertaining and impressing the audience. Thank you to the Music Department for their tuition of our students.
Yesterday the 2014 Grandparents Day saw (insert number of guests) attending the school to express their interest in their grandchildren
and special friends. On behalf of the school, I thank all those who made the effort to attend, with many also attending the Junior Concert.
The wonderful weather and the catering provided by the Mothers Club ensured the day was a great success. We thank our fine musicians,
the Stage Band, who entertained the enthusiastic audience.

INDONESIAN SISTER SCHOOL
STUDENT VISIT
Over the previous twelve months GVGS has been able to
establish a sister school relationship with a Muslim school based
in Surabaya, Indonesia. The school is Muhammadiyah 2, and it
is part of a large network of schools throughout Indonesia. The
school has 900 students from Years 10 to 12 and is committed
to developing positive relationships with schools from many
countries throughout the world. The school has a genuine
commitment to its students learning not only English, but
Japanese and Arabic. It also has a relationship with Lorne-Aireys
Inlet P-12 and these two schools have had student exchanges
for the past 4 years.
Two of our students from Year 10 have just returned from a six
day visit to Muhammadiyah 2 having been billeted with students
from that school. They were certainly treated to a unique
experience that will have given them the opportunity to develop
friendships from within that school’s community and build their
confidence in Indonesian language.
Students from Muhammadiyah 2 are very keen to visit us from
February 15th to 19th next year. The number of students who
come is very much determined by how many of our families are
in a position to offer to host the students. The students from
Muhammadiyah 2 would be selected to attend GVGS by their
school based on a range of criteria, one of which is the student’s
ability to speak English.
If you are able to offer a place to one or two students it would be
a wonderful opportunity for your child to broaden their
understanding of cultural diversity and for our visitors to practise
their English while experiencing Australian culture. An offer to
billet is not limited to students from Years 10 – 12. If you feel you
would be able to host any of these students in February 2015,
then please contact me at school either by phone or email.

The Presentation Evening this year will be held on Wednesday,
10th December at Eastbank Centre, Welsford St, Shepparton at

who have achieved excellence in many elements of their
schooling this year.

Subjects, Academic Achievement Awards, Progress Awards,
Encouragement Awards and Major Awards focusing on

award winners will be notified and allocated their individual
ticket separately. Further tickets can be requested, but will only
be allocated if available, and after initial allocations are finalised.
Please read the Order Form for closing dates and ticket
distribution dates.

LOTE AWARDS
At the assembly this week the LOTE Department presented
certificates to those students who received a Distinction or High
Distinction for the ALC (Assessment of Language Competence)
tests completed earlier this year. In total 48 students were
awarded certificates. This result is very pleasing. For Indonesian
Certificate 1 for example 44% of students (Year 8 students)
gained a Distinction against an average of 31% for all
participating schools. Many students from VSL also undertook
the test which was a reading and listening test. Each year
students in Year 8 and 9 undertake the test. Overall results from
the testing does give teachers good feedback. Next year the ALC
test will be done online.
Several Year 11 students entered the 2014 Sayembara Bahasa
Indonesia writing competition. This took place in the form of a
journal. Also at the assembly, we were pleased to be able to
present two students with acknowledgement for second and third
place in this competition. Congratulations went to Henry Fox,
third place and Isabelle Torriero, second place.

CHANGES TO THE SECONDARY
SCHOOLS TAX FILE NUMBER
PROGRAMME IN 2015
Over the past few years the school has been involved in the
programme which allowed secondary students to apply for a Tax
File Number and the school would endorse their application.
We have been notified by the ATO that the Secondary Schools
Tax File Number (TFN) Programme will not continue beyond 31st
December 2014. This means that School TFN forms will no
longer be processed beyond this date.
How students can apply for a TFN from 1st
January 2015
The Australian Taxation Office in partnership with Australia Post
is making it easier for individuals to apply for a TFN. Students
can now apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified
through an interview at a participating Australia Post office.
Applying online is the fastest and most convenient way for
students to get a TFN. More information on applying online can
be found at ato.gov.au by searching for 'QC27248'
Students who are unable to visit a participating Australia Post
office will need to complete the application form Tax file number
- application or enquiry for individuals form (NAT 1432). More
information about lodging this form can be found at ato.gov.au
by searching for 'QC22604'

FAMILYCARE CHRISTMAS
APPEAL
For a number of years GVGS has supported the FamilyCare
Christmas Appeal through our tutorial system. Students are
asked to make a small donation and to either buy a present or
donate the money. GVGS students have always given
generously to this appeal and FamilyCare and the local families
they support gratefully appreciate and acknowledge their
contribution in supporting those in the community in need at
Christmas. Donations are presented to FamilyCare at our
Christmas Service held at St Mels Catholic Church on
Wednesday 10th December at 11:30 am.
Towards the back of this Newsletter is information about the
FamilyCare Christmas Appeal – if any members of the school
community wish to make a contribution there are drop off points
in Shepparton or you are most welcome to leave your donation
at Student Reception and we will ensure that it gets to
FamilyCare.

2015 YEARS 10 – 12 LAST DAY
ACTIVITY
On the final day of school, Wednesday 10th December, all
students in 2015 Years 10 – 12 will be going to Village Cinemas
following the Church Service. The Year 10 students will be
watching a pre-release screening of ‘Penguins of Madagascar’
(PG) and the Year 11 and 12 students will be watching
‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day’
(PG). Students will be accompanied by Tutors from their year
level.
All students will need to bring their lunch to school as there will
be no time to purchase lunch or snacks at the cinema. To reduce
the number of school bags being moved around on the day, we
will not be allowing all students to take their school bags with
them to the Church Service and cinemas. We would encourage
students to make plans to share a bag with a number of friends
to accommodate their lunch.
On this day students will be transported between venues and
functions by Shepparton Transit buses. Following the movie
students will be back at Goulburn Valley Grammar School in time
to catch their normal buses.
If students are intending to leave school early, depart from the
Church Service or from the cinema, they must provide their Tutor
with a signed note during Tutorial on the day.
If you have any questions about the arrangements on this day,
please feel free to contact me via e-mail
pohlnerc@gvgs.vic.edu.au or via phone (03) 5821 8155.
“ILLEGAL DRUGS – WHAT YOU
NEED TO KNOW” DRUG
EDUCATION RESOURCES
Research suggests the teenage years are when alcohol and
other drugs are first initiated. This highlights the importance of
intervening early to prevent drug use uptake and associated
harms. To achieve this, there is a critical need for accurate and
credible evidence-based information that can be accessed by
young people, their parents and teachers.
To meet this need the National Drug and Alcohol Research
Centre and the National Drug Research Institute were funded by
the Australian Government Department of Health to develop an
illegal drugs resource package for use by teachers, parents and
students, the booklets in this series have been developed to:

Provide accurate, up to date information about illegal
drugs, their use, effects and potential harms

Help students to make informed choices and deal with
pressure from peers

Provide guidance about how to talk to a young person
about illegal drugs, or help someone who has taken a
drug

LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP
This year we are holding a Goulburn Valley Grammar School –
Student Leadership Workshop on Tuesday 9th December
(8:45am–3:20pm) at school. This is Orientation Day and a pupil
free day for most of the student population. On this day the Class
of 2015 Student Leaders (School Captains, Prefects and House
Captains) and 2015 Year 8 Middle Years Leaders will be
attending school as per normal, including wearing their summer
school uniform.
The aim of the workshop is to allow the Student Leadership
group to work collaboratively on many of the wonderful ideas
which students have shared with peers and staff. During the day
the students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of
people on further developing these initiatives. Some of the
activities during the day will be facilitated by Values for Life.
Values for Life are a highly engaging group from Melbourne who
work with students in a school environment on issues that are
important to Year 12 Students and Year 8 Students regarding
Leadership.
During lunch students will be joined by the Chair of the Board,
Mrs Prue Dobson and the 2015 Staff Leadership Group including
the Principal, Mr Mark Torriero. Students who are required at this
workshop received an invitation regarding the function and
should have already indicated their intention to attend. If this is
not the case, please see us on Monday morning.

LIBRARY BYTES
Wars that has wiped out everyone between the ages of twenty
and sixty. They live on scraps of food and hide in abandon
buildings to survive. Callie stumbles upon a way to find them a
roof over their heads and ultimate safety - she would rent her
body out to an elderly person for a time and make some money.
The process is done by the Prime Company that swaps the
minds of young and old for a time so the old can re-experience
their youth with the aid of a young body. Callie must do this to
save her brother and give him a future.
Over the past two weeks our library lunchtimes have been
extremely busy with the Christmas decoration activities. The
students have made Angels, Reindeer and Christmas trees with
Ms Dunham and Needlepoint stars and decorative Baubles and
Christmas trees with Mrs Keady. Also, as my photos show, I am
pleased to say that some of our senior students have also
become involved with these activities.
All goes well until, during a swap, Callie wakes up via a
malfunction in her implanted microchip and finds herself in the
life of Helen, an older lady who is trying to expose Prime for
stealing teenagers to rent out. Who can she trust and who is
living in the body of her ‘young’ friends. She needs to expose the
truth, while trying to escape the evil clutches of the boss of Prime,
the Old Man. Can she survive and find her brother and reveal
what the real Prime is up to?
There is a sequel to this heart-stopping novel, called Enders, well
worth a read for those who like futuristic fiction.
Reviewed by Mrs Jodie Keady, for Year 7 and up.
Once more Mr Ray Eldridge has kindly established a display of
antique toys in our display cabinets in the library foyer. These
miniature items in some cases are replicas of their larger
counterparts, and the General Hospital even has a moving lift.
His collection is extremely interesting and it brought back fond
memories for our Grandparents when they visited the school on
Thursday.
Book Review:
Starters By Lissa Price
Imagine your body when you get old. You
can’t run, jump, dance, ride horses like
you use to because of arthritis. Imagine if
you lived until you were 200 years old,
not being able to do all the things you
loved to do. Well this book offers a rather
dangerous and mysterious answer to this
aging problem. Rent the body of a young
person! Written in the first person this
novel about body renting is fast paced
and action packed. Callie is left alone to
look after her little brother in a world that
has been all but destroyed by the Spore

TUCKSHOP 2015
At GVGS we operate a tuckshop for the preparation and sale of snacks and lunches for students and staff. The policy of the Tuckshop
is “to offer a range of nutritious food and snacks to students and staff at reasonable prices and to produce a surplus for the purpose
of improving and providing school equipment and facilities”.
In order to produce a surplus we depend on people who are able to voluntarily assist the staff in the tuckshop with preparing food
and serving. You will not be required to handle any money. Volunteers usually feel quite comfortable doing these tasks and also
have a chance to meet and chat with other Parents, grandparents your child and their friends and also interact with staff. All
involvement with the Tuckshop is greatly appreciated. The suggested time is from 9:30am until approximately 1:30pm, or any time
that suit you.
If you are able to assist us at any time at the tuckshop, we ask that you fill in the information below and return it to the school office
or tuckshop as soon as possible. A roster will be drawn up and forwarded to you early in the new school year.
Thanking you.
