Today’s Gospel
Gospel : Luke 1:26-38
Let us pray that we, like Mary, may be open to
God’s Spirit when it comes into our lives in ways
we do not expect.
Blessed are you among women!
Daily Readings
Sunday, December 21

How do we know the date of Jesus’ birth?
I’ve checked my Bible, and I can’t find any
mention of the date.
Wednesday, December 24
2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-11, 14a, 16, Luke 1:67-79
Thursday, December 25
Isaiah 52:7-10, Hebrews 1:1-6,John 1:1-18
You’re right: The Bible doesn’t say Jesus was
born December 25. The Gospels of Matthew
and Luke are the only Scriptures to give much
detail about Christ’s birth and infancy. They
name the key political figures of the day, but
not much else (Luke 1:5 and 2:1–2). Neither
evangelist included specific information
about the dates.
Dates were apparently not important to
the earliest Christians. Besides, the first
few generations of Christ’s followers were
far more interested in celebrating Christ’s
resurrection each Sunday, and eventually
on Easter, than they were in celebrating his
birth.
Christians started to associate December 25
with Christ’s nativity centuries after the
fact: the year 336, according to the earliest
evidence.
The most popular theory is that the Church
chose to replace a popular pagan Roman
sun festival celebrating the winter solstice
(December 21 or 22) with a Christian feast
that could overtake the pagan festival and
use its sun imagery to speak of Christ as the
unconquered “Sun of Righteousness.”

Pray the rosary
Choose one of the following activities as a way to
further reflect on the Sunday readings:
•
Mary said "yes" to God’s call without knowing what it
would mean. Her story shows that nothing is impossible
with God. Think of one area of your family life that you
think is impossible. During prayer time this week, ask God
for assistance with that family situation.
•
Gather with your family and say the Joyful Mysteries of the
Rosary together. Ask Mary to give you the courage to
listen to God as she did.
•
history. How have you carried on the story of faith in your
family?
Review the Hail Mary with your children. Make sure they can
each say it from memory.

A Family Gift
In the spirit of our Parish Theme, “The Family”,
Mary Queen Catholic Church has an incredible gift
for you this Christmas. Following each of the
Masses on December 24th & 25th, every family at
Mary Queen Catholic Church will receive a
complimentary copy of a great Catholic book.
Parish Family Christmas Tree
The beautiful Christmas tree in the
narthex of the church is a fitting
symbol of our holiday season and
an opportunity to share your gifts as
families in our parish community.
Please feel free to bring an
ornament to decorate the tree,
which is designated as our "Parish
Family Christmas Tree." We invite
all our parishioners and friends to
donate one ornament per family to
our Christmas tree this year.
The Parish Office and Parish Center
will be closed December 24th, 25th
and 26th due to the Christmas
Holiday.
Fr. Jim, Fr. Benny, Fr. Lamartine, Fr. Moe,

STEWARDS AMONG US
Floyd & Ann Bartsch
Floyd and Ann joined Mary Queen in
1974. They have been married 43
years, have three children and five
grandchildren. In the past, they were
sponsors for engaged couples in the
Marriage Preparation program, were
Eucharistic Ministers, taught CCE and
helped with the festivals. Currently they
both volunteer on Tuesdays in the Food Pantry. Floyd
serves as an Instituted Acolyte since 2007, is a founding
member of the Knights of Columbus Council 8494 and is
a member of the 4th Degree Assembly 2084. They both
continue to give of their time and talents to the Lord!
All members of Mary Queen are encouraged to explore and find a ministry
that interests you. If you give your time and talents then through God’s
grace you will be rewarded tenfold.
Update Your Parish Information
Do we have your up-to-date personal information? If
you have moved, lost or added a family member,
changed your name, phone number or email address,
please provide your updated information to Rhonda
Hansen at rhansen@maryqueenchurch.org or 281-4821391. This will help to ensure that you receive
communications from the church.
Women’s Ministry Retreat
Plan ahead and keep February 6th (evening) and 7th (daytime)
open for the Annual Women’s Ministry Retreat at Mary
Queen. Invite friends and family to join us as we learn and grow
from the biblical Woman of Proverbs 31. Come and be blessed
as we study Scriptural Principles and skills for daily living from
God’s Word. This is a beautiful retreat for women - including
older teens – of all ages.
