Who are the children? WHO CAN ADOPT FROM CHINA*

WACAP delivers
reliable, personal adoption services
to bring a child into your family.
ADOPTIONS FROM CHINA
WACAP understands that adoption is a big decision, and we’ll be here for you every step of the way. Since 1990, we’ve brought over
2,000 children from China into loving adoptive families across the United States. We’d be delighted to help you bring your child home.
Who are the children?
Chinese children of all ages need loving homes.
WACAP’s personal adoption guides will get to
know your family and help you find your son
or daughter. You can adopt an infant or young
child with minor to more serious medical needs
that are typically manageable and correctable, or
an older child with no identified health concerns.
Some Chinese children waiting for families have
been assigned a Promise Child grant of $1,700–4,200. Many of these kids are
part of the Chinese government’s “Special Focus” program, which seeks to find
families for kids who are older or have more serious medical needs. For more
information, visit www.wacap.org or contact us.
Adoption Process From China
Once your family has submitted your application and joined our China
program, your personal adoption guide can help match your family with a child,
or you can select a child from one of our waiting child lists. China has different
paperwork requirements for different children. Some children can be matched
with families immediately; others, typically the youngest with the most minor
needs, can only be matched with families who’ve completed their dossier.
Regardless of the type of child you hope to adopt, you’ll complete a homestudy.
If you live in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Wisconsin, Connecticut, New Jersey,
Iowa or New York, WACAP can do your homestudy. If you live outside our
service area, you must select a Hague-or COA-accredited homestudy agency
in your state. Next, you’ll gain clearance from U.S. Immigration and complete
your dossier. The dossier will be logged in 2–4 weeks after it reaches China.
Wait Time
The wait time to bring a child home from China varies. Your wait time will
depend on what your family is open to (e.g., child’s age, gender, medical needs,
etc.) Most of our families are matched in 1–12 months of submitting their
dossier paperwork, and the average wait is six months or fewer. If you’re hoping
to adopt a child 12 months or under or a girl under age 2, the wait tends to
be closer to 12+ months (particularly if you’re requesting to be matched with
a child whose individual needs don’t include cleft lip/palate or other, more
complex conditions). If you’re matched with a child before dossier log-in, you’ll
wait 5–8 months from log-in to travel. If you’re matched after dossier log-in,
you’ll wait 4–6 months from match to travel.
