Rabbi’s Report by Rabbi James Rosen
Hail to the Editor
The title "editor” seems to depict a rather simple job. It describes the task of
someone who has apparently assumed the role of grammatical expert, a matter of simply
excising a word here or there, suggesting a couple of possible additions or deletions and
making some text fit into prearranged spaces.
But to consciously and consistently shape a final written product is like giving birth
to a new creation. In the case of Temple Topics, a new "baby" is born every month. And
the labor pains involved are many: reminding writers to submit their work, fitting
everything into tight parameters, choosing the best way to highlight upcoming holidays and Beth El
events, and coordinating the many different contributors, proof reading again and again and much more.
All of this in a way that will be appealing to our members’ eyes and demonstrating honor and respect to all
who write.
For the past 14 years Francine Stier has performed this task with remarkable patience, creativity,
ingenuity, and a passion for her work. It is no exaggeration to suggest that for Francine this is been a work
of religious commitment. As one who is so involved in Beth El and cares about every aspect of our
congregation’s work, one who herself identifies so totally with the daily rhythms of our religious life, she
has fashioned for us the essence of Beth El each and every month.
We are taught in the Talmud that one who engages in the work of the community is as one who
teaches Torah. Tradition such as ours uses words as the central way of conveying religious truths, and our
deep passion for real community. Francine has made a huge difference in shaping us all. In her able hands,
Francine has made communication, the use of words, the vehicle for making Beth El part of the lives of so
many.
Thank you Francine for all that you have done on our behalf. Because of you we are a stronger
congregation and a better community.
Editors Note: Please allow me one last indulgence—I wanted to repeat one
of my favorite editorials from 2002, ”Reading Torah.”
I started to read Torah shortly before my adult Bat Mitzvah. The awe and apprehension I felt was a
combination of avoiding embarrassment for myself and my family as well as a fear of committing an
unpardonable affront to those knowledgeable in Torah. Now I realize (after having read Torah for awhile)
that the fear and trembling has more to do with the awesome task of standing before our sacred scrolls, on
the Bima of our Sanctuary-a holy place. At this point the jitters and pounding heart remind me of the
covenant I chose to make with Judaism.
Learning my Torah portion has become an activity that centers me when I feel under particular stress.
I feel grounded in a purpose beyond myself, toward something which has guided the Jewish people for
generations. Just the daily repetition of the words and trope in an effort to learn the reading has a certain
calming effect.
I remember a story about my grandfather, whose father (Yudel) was the most religious and respected
Hasid in their small shtetl. Yudel used to come to my grandfather’s home every Shabbat to prod him out
of bed to go to schul. This was after my grandfather was already the father of four young children and a
business man. I think he probably just wanted to sleep late and rest in bed most Saturdays but Yudel
would have none of that.
My mother had a very special relationship with Yudel. She always wanted to accompany him to
schul and in fact attended services nestled close to him while she was young. But when she came of age,
she was unable to be downstairs with him. She wanted so desperately to learn Torah. Now, both she and I
are coming full circle to join the generations of Torah readers before us. [Ed. Note: My mom passed away
in 2009. She read Torah monthly with such great joy.]
When I first came to Beth El on my quest toward Judaism, it was as an outsider. By that I mean that
because I couldn’t read Hebrew or follow the service, I felt distanced from my religion. And for a long
time I was comfortable there-it kept me invisible-I did not have to align myself with the intimidating and
mysterious aspects of the language, rituals and choreography. But, like Dorothy in Oz, pulling back the
curtain on the great and mysterious can sometimes reveal intense beauty, magic and truth.
Standing up on the Bima behind the unfolding Torah scrolls is something magical. The words are
revealed like a road map– one upon which my yad (Torah pointer—a gift from Sisterhood) travels. The
Hebrew letters appear to me like hills and valleys to traverse-my voice going up and over the hills or
down and under the valleys. When I finish reading, my heart stops pounding and I am so relieved that I
traveled through the reading with only minor bumps in the road. Sometimes, what I am given to read has
much resonance to my daily life. At other times, the reading remains a mystery to be unlocked at some
later point.
Rabbi Rosen once mentioned that one of his goals for Beth El was to have “too many Torah readers.”
I think that he is well on his way-several Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah classes have assured that many more
members are acquiring the skill and expertise needed to step up to the Bima. I look forward to meeting
you there-we can tremble together!

Exclusive Premiere of Lifetime’s,
“The Red Tent” Miniseries
Monday, 12/ 1 7:00 pm
The world premiere of Lifetime’s miniseries “The Red Tent,”
isn’t until December 7, but the Women’s Network of Beth El
Temple has acquired Part I of the miniseries (running length
approximately two hours) to show at an exclusive preview. This
screening is open to the public and is being shown as a fundraiser for
The Lillian Fund and My Sister’s Place.
Lifetime’s miniseries “The Red Tent,” based on the best-selling
novel by Anita Diamant, is a sweeping tale that takes place during
the times of the Bible, told through the eyes of Dinah, the daughter of
Leah and Jacob. The all-star cast includes Academy Award, Golden
Globe and Emmy nominee Minnie Driver (“Return to Zero,” “About
a Boy”), Emmy nominee Morena Baccarin (“Homeland”), Golden
Globe nominee Rebecca Ferguson (“The White Queen”), Iain Glen
(“Game of Thrones”), Will Tudor (“Game of Thrones”) and
Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Debra Winger
(“Terms of Endearment”).
The miniseries begins with Dinah’s (Ferguson) happy childhood
spent inside the red tent where the women of her tribe gather and
share the traditions and turmoil of ancient womanhood. The film
recounts the story of Dinah’s mothers Leah (Driver), Rachel
(Baccarin), Zilpah and Bilhah, the four wives of Jacob (Glen). Dinah
matures and experiences an intense love that subsequently leads to a
devastating loss, and the fate of her family is forever changed.
Winger portrays Rebecca, Jacob’s mother while Tudor stars as
Joseph, Dinah’s brother.
“The Red Tent” has sold millions of copies worldwide and has
been translated in 28 languages. The novel is a New York Times, Los
Angeles Times, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, USA

Endowment News
Why Endowment?
Honor the Past. . .Cherish the Present.. .Assure the Future. . .
The Talmud teaches us, “I did not find the world desolate when I entered it, and as my fathers planted for me,
so do I plant for my children.”
Each of us has the opportunity to do something for the future of Beth El Temple. We can make a difference. We can Aim Chai. This is
our community and it is our responsibility to preserve what has been created and help it flourish. A secure Endowment will enable us to
realize the future and meet the ever-changing needs of our congregation. We honor our past, as we support today’s strength’s, in order to
secure tomorrow’s possibilities.
Everyone has a unique family and financial situation but your legacy gift can be designed to match your personal circumstances. With
your support, we will secure a sound future for Beth El Temple. Contact endowment@bethelwh.org or one of the Endowment Trustees.

Fast of the Tenth of Tevet
1/1
The Tenth of Tevet marks the day on which the Babylonian siege
of Jerusalem began in the year 588 BCE, an event which eventually led to the
destruction on the Temple in 586 BCE and the first exile from Israel. The
Tenth of Tevet is considered a "minor fast" from sunrise to sunset.
