Hunter Sports High Spectator TERM 4 – WEEK 11 BALANCING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT A Message from the Principal What a fantastic end we’ve had to the 2014 school year – as well as interesting lessons in the classroom we’ve had magical school performances, fun runs, many exciting and engaging excursions, orientation day, presentation day and a lot of end of year fun. These exciting final weeks have capped off a great year at Hunter Sports High School and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated staff for the fantastic job they do each and every day to provide a quality education for our 800+ students. I would also like to thank all our parents and carers for your efforts throughout the year to support and guide your kids in their education, and for your support of our school. Our students took to the stage recently, performing The Real Story of Neverland, the first school production seen at Hunter Sports High in over 20 years! Congratulations to all students and staff involved, in particular Ms Outred for her passion and determination to provide this wonderful opportunity for our students. Thanks also to the hundreds who came to watch. It was a great night and we can’t wait for next year’s show! Students say thank you to Ms. Outred for all her work, support and dedication to stage The Real Story of Neverland production. We also had some special visitors to the school, with approximately 120 Year 6 students joining us for Orientation Day to help prepare them for life as a Year 7 student at Hunter Sports High. We saw lots of smiles on their faces and we are looking forward to welcoming them all to our school next year. Our Presentation Day assemblies held on Friday were a great showcase of the talent and abilities of our students and to be able to acknowledge their successes and achievements in front of their families and the whole school is a highlight of our year. Congratulations to everyone who received awards and to all students for the efforts they make on a daily basis. A wrap up of the major awards is included further in this newsletter. Hundreds of family, friends and community members were captivated by the new take on the classic Peter Pan story and our students shone in their roles of cast and crew. Creative Director and drama teacher Ms Outred was extremely proud of the students involved. “It was magical to see some of our kids up on stage for the first time singing and performing for their friends, families and community members,” she said. “It may have been a small production, but the self-confidence and life lessons that our students gained in the process were priceless. The students got such a buzz from the performance and I encourage them all, and more, to get involved again next year.” Some of Miss Outred’s favourite moments from the performance, which was the first school production at Hunter Sports High School in over 20 years, included: • • • • Standing in the wings backstage trying to calm a student down from stage fright, then watching her march confidently out to a pirate song. Watching all of the younger kids and siblings in the audience lining up to get photos with Tinkerbell. Seeing the cast and crew’s smiling faces as they took a bow at the end with a sense of accomplishment. Hearing the last minute whispers backstage before the curtain opened as all of the students were wishing each other luck and giving each other encouraging pats on the back. And a final word from Ms Outred: “All you need is a little faith, trust and pixie dust!” Hunter Sports High Spectator TERM 4 – WEEK 11 BALANCING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT Celebrating Success at Presentation Day 2014 It was wonderful to see so many family and community members at Hunter Sports High School on Friday to help us celebrate the successes and achievements of our students. Hunter Sports High Spectator TERM 4 – WEEK 11 BALANCING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT Japanese Students Visit HSHS Hunter Sports High School recently welcomed a group of Japanese students from Kushiro Koryo High School in Hokkaido, Japan. The five female students had been awarded scholarships to visit Australia to focus on science studies which included lectures at Macquarie University, touring the Cumberland National Park and completing research at the Wetlands Environmental Education Centre. The students, accompanied by teachers and an interpreter, th arrived at Hunter Sports High on Thursday 4 December for a four-night stay with host families from our school community. On Friday the visiting students presented their scientific studies to some of our Year 10 science classes. Their presentations were very interesting and were well received by our staff and students. Our guests also joined two Year 7 Japanese classes. In the first class students participated in a fun and educational trivia challenge about Japan and Australia. The quiz included spelling the highest mountains of both countries and everyone decided Mt Fuji was much easier to spell than Mt Kosciuszko! There was also time for a Jan-ken-pon (scissors-paper-rock) competition and a few rounds of the popular chopstick challenge! During the next class the students listened to Uncle Darryl French from the Minimbah Aboriginal education team talk about Aboriginal language and culture before heading down to look at our Aboriginal mural. Over the weekend the students enjoyed various activities with their host families including visiting our local beaches and wildlife parks, shopping, playing games, trying Vegemite and cooking a Japanese dinner for their host families. By Monday the students had formed new friendships and there were many tears as our Japanese students said farewell and departed Hunter Sports High. A big thank you to the wonderful host families – the Edwards, Hardy, Ingram and Weekes families – who opened their homes to welcome the Japanese students. ありがとうございました。 Hunter Sports High Spectator TERM 4 – WEEK 11 BALANCING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT Around the Grounds: Support Unit The Support Unit has had a very busy final few months of 2014, with lots of interesting excursions and hard work happening. At the end of November students from the Support Unit attended celebrations for the International Day of People with a Disability at Speers Point Park. The day was actionpacked with face painting, henna tattoos, basketball, ten pin bowling and lots of other stalls and activities. The students were very pleased to meet two players from the Newcastle Jets squad and to receive a Jets hat! Hunter Sports High School performed a signing choir to popular Sam Smith song You Are Not the Only One. This performance was led by Ms Sharyn Stewart who did a marvellous job modelling the signing. After the performance several audience members even congratulated our students on an outstanding effort! The Support Unit now has access to new iPads which have been greatly appreciated by our students who are enjoying discovering new apps to assist with learning in the classroom. Support Unit students and staff celebrated the end of a fantastic 2014 with their own mini-formal held in the staff common room on Thursday last week. Many of the students didn’t get to attend their own formals this year so this was a great chance for them to dress up, dance and celebrate. The kids had a ball, as did the many staff who dropped in to visit and party with the kids! Hunter Sports High Spectator TERM 4 – WEEK 11 BALANCING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT Around the Grounds: Big Picture Around the Grounds: Science I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the dedication, professionalism, hard work and compassion the science faculty have provided the students of Hunter Sports High this year. Our school and students are extremely lucky to have such caring and supportive teachers. As part of the Year 11 motion program in physics, students got to put theories to the test to measure speed, distance and time at Warners Bay Go Karts. Students got a first-hand experience of forces and compared the speed of different drivers. Congratulations to the winner on the day, Kurt Lawther. 2014 has been a significant year for Big Picture students at Hunter Sports High. Two students have gained apprenticeships – Zachary Cootes an apprentice carpenter and Luke Cunningham an apprentice bricklayer. Furthermore, two students are in the process of signing off on their carpentry apprenticeships. Congratulations to Emily Mors who has established her own photography business and now has a fully functioning studio. Please visit her web page via www.facebook.com/emilymichellepage. Emily recently won the Newcastle Herald ‘Best Photographer’ in the school newspaper competition for the third year in a row. Emily was provided great opportunities to develop her skills and gain valuable experience as a professional photographer through the Big Picture program. We wish her every success in the future. 2015 will see continued growth in Big Picture, with a further 20 students enrolled in Year 8 and current students moving on to the next stage of their learning. Big Picture staff and students would like to thank the many members of our community who have volunteered their time to mentor students in their interests throughout the year. Building on the fantastic experiences where students challenged themselves and overcame their fears, Big Picture will again go on a team bonding and leadership camp to be held in Term 2 next year. Students continue to meet the commitments of the Big Picture program and improve in all areas of their individual learning. It is exciting to see students engaged and taking responsibility for their learning by identifying and exploring their personal interests and passions. Above: Year 10 students utilise a ‘connected classroom’ in conjunction with staff and students at the Cooks Hill campus. These students are gaining excellent marks for HSC courses and are working towards university in 2017. During Term Four a practicum teacher from Vietnam, Ms Nhyung Lee, spent some time working with the science faculty and the students of Hunter Sports High. On a Teacher Scholarship from Vietnam, she gave the students a taste of what education and life is like in her country. I hope this inspired students to explore a range of different career pathways and opportunities and we wish her the very best in her future endeavours. We also had a visit recently from Dr Geoff De Iuliis who came to talk to some of our future scientists who are looking at studying medical research or degrees in the medical field. Dr De Iuliis is currently researching in the area of cancer. His visit was part of the Scientists in Schools program, an ongoing partnership between Newcastle University, CSIRO and Hunter Sports High School, and it has been of great benefit to the students and their future career pathways. Wishing all students, parents and staff a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. During the day the students rotated through a series of six activities, all designed to prepare students for their first day and motivate them about starting high school and making new friends. It was a hot and muggy day but in spite of that, the students had big smiles on their faces as they made their way between each activity and through the school. Year 9 and 10 peer support students did a fantastic job of running teambuilding activities and being group leaders and they should be commended for their commitment. The day was a huge success thanks to the hard work of many people behind the scenes. I am looking forward to working with Year 7 in 2015 and am excited about what the future will bring for them. Hunter Sports High Spectator TERM 4 – WEEK 11 BALANCING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT SPORTS REPORT cont. Students Raise a Tonne in Fun Run End of Year Tennis Update Hunter Sports High students participated in a Fun Run last week to raise money for their school. TSP Tennis has been cruising along nicely in Term 4. Recently, the Boys Hunter Tennis Trials were held at District Park Tennis Club at Broadmeadow and all 16 years and under boys in the Hunter region were invited to attend. All tennis boys at Hunter Sports High School were present on the day with two players being successful in making the top nine to form the Hunter team. Congratulations to Matthew Abbott (#2) and Ryley Gertz (#7). I had the pleasure of being the team manager and coach for this team at the State CHS Carnival in Rockdale, Sydney. th The boys came 9 overall and played with the utmost sportsmanship and dedication over the three-day event. TSP Tennis completed a fitness challenge in Term 3 which became increasingly more difficult towards the end of term. However, this term they have been focussing on match play, fitness-based games and attempting to improve what they consider to be the weakest component of their game. In what was a great day for the students, they walked and ran from Eleebana to Speers Point and raised $1100 in the process from generous sponsorships by families and friends. The funds raised will be used to purchase a new barbecue for the school that will be used for many school functions. A huge thank you to the Student Representative Council for organising the event and to all students who participated in and supported it. The top money-raisers were Ashley Robottom from our Year 8 Big Picture class and Tyrah-Ruby Luschwitz from Year 7. Congratulations girls and thank you! The students recently had an excursion to Newcastle Beach and Ocean Baths where they celebrated the year with beach volleyball, swimming races and hot chips! It was a fantastic morning though I urge all tennis players to stick with their chosen sport as their spikes, digs and freestyle techniques need a lot of extra work! I would like to extend my best wishes to all tennis players and their families for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please ensure students keep up their on-court training and fitness throughout the summer break as it can take several weeks to regain these levels when they return next year.
