Sunday, Dec 21, 2014 Bulletin # 51 Page 1 “Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11 Welcome: We welcome each one who has come today to worship here on this Fourth Sunday of Advent. Please join us for a cup of coffee after the morning worship service in the fellowship hall downstairs. This evening the Sunday School children will present their Christmas concert. A separate order of worship will be handed out. WORSHIP SERVICE ~ 10:00 AM He Makes All Things New GATHERING TO WORSHIP Prelude Welcome and Announcements * Song: Holy Emmanuel * Call to Worship A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” As we worship today, let us prepare to welcome God’s powerful work in our midst, in our hearts, in our community, and in all of creation. Let us worship God. * God’s Greeting The Lord be with you. And also with you. The love of God the Father, The grace of God the Son, The power of God the Spirit is with you. Amen * Song of Response #480(LUYH), sung twice: Wait for the Lord ADVENT CELEBRATION Advent Reading The angel told Mary that she was expecting a child: The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the Highest hover over you; Therefore, the child you bring to birth will be called Holy, Son of God. Elizabeth, Mary’s relative was also pregnant, six months along. Elizabeth had not been able to have children, but God had blessed her with a miracle. In a few months her child would be born. Nothing is impossible with God! When Mary heard that Elizabeth was also expecting child, she didn’t waste a minute. She got up and traveled to a town in Judah in the hill country, straight to Zachariah’s house, and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby in her womb leaped. She was filled with the Holy Spirit, and sang out exuberantly, You’re so blessed among women, and the babe in your womb, also blessed! Sunday, Dec 21, 2014 * * Bulletin # 51 Page 2 And why am I so blessed that the mother of my Lord visits me? The moment the sound of your greeting entered my ears, The babe in my womb skipped like a lamb for sheer joy. Blessed woman, who believed what God said, believed every word would come true! Mary responded with a song: I’m bursting with God-news; I’m dancing the song of my Savior God. God took one good look at me, and look what happened— I’m the most fortunate woman on earth! What God has done for me will never be forgotten, the God whose very name is holy, set apart from all others. His mercy flows in wave after wave on those who are in awe before him. He bared his arm and showed his strength, scattered the bluffing braggarts. He knocked tyrants off their high horses, pulled victims out of the mud. The starving poor sat down to a banquet; the callous rich were left out in the cold. He embraced his chosen child, Israel; he remembered and piled on the mercies, piled them high. It’s exactly what he promised, beginning with Abraham and right up to now. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months and then went back to her own home. Lighting of the Advent Candle During this Advent season we have been getting ready for the coming of Jesus Christ. The fact that Jesus came should mean several things to us. It means that we can celebrate Jesus’ past, coming to Bethlehem as a baby. It means we can be encouraged because he still lives with us. It means that he is coming again to take us home to live with him forever. It also means that we can shout with the glad angels by saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests!” The four candles shining together announce that Jesus came for each of us and he is the Light of the World!
