Thanksgiving Day is a time to remember and not
forget. Dt. 4:9. Only take heed to thyself, and
keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the
things which thine eyes have seen, and lest
they depart from thy heart all the days of
thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy
sons' sons;
Thanksgiving Day is a time to recall the Christian
history of America.
In a letter from Columbus to Rafael
Sanchez, Treasurer for Ferdinand and Isabella,
giving a summary account of the voyage to America,
Christopher Columbus wrote: “Let Christ rejoice
upon earth as he does in heaven, to witness the
coming salvation of so many people, heretofore
given over to perdition.”
The Mayflower Compact, 1620.
“Having undertaken, for the glory of God, and the
advancement of the Christian faith and honor of our
king and country, a voyage to plant the first colony
in the Northern parts of Virginia.”
Massasoit, the chief of the Wampanoags,
adopted Christian names for his children and facilitated an unprecedented 50-year treaty of unbroken
peace between the local Indian community and the
Pilgrim settlement. By 1670 the entire Indian population of Martha’s Vineyard Island came to Christ.
The pilgrims founded what would be
Harvard University within the first decade of their
arrival. The rules and precepts of 1646 stipulated
that “every student shall consider the main end of
his life and studies to know God and Jesus Christ
which is eternal life.” The Bible was to be read twice
a day, with all students expected to be “ready to give
an account of their proficiency therein.”
In 1863 Lincoln began the tradition of proclaiming the last Thursday of November as a national Thanksgiving Day. Lincoln proclaimed: But we
have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious
hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied
and enriched and strengthened us, and we have
vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts,
that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated
with unbroken success, we have become too selfsufficient to, feel the necessity of redeeming and
preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that
made us.
Let’s be thankful unto the Lord and bless His Name!
