We are so fortunate to have so many of them in the Diocese of Providence. We are especially blessed with the presence of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of Mercy who live in Saint Anthony Convent on Pope Street. Since the convent was established in 1997 these religious women from Nigeria have been a blessing to our parishes. Over the years they have taught Religious Education Classes, volunteered in our outreach programs for the poor, acted as sacristans for daily Mass, visited the sick and will be soon be assisting at Holy Family Home as overnight supervisors. Currently the convent is filled to capacity with five nuns who also work at hospitals and nursing homes to support their religious community. Please remember them in your prayers during this time and continue to pray for new vocations to the priesthood and religious life. A. Mariani and Son Funeral Home for donating the calendars to the Church of the Presentation. People who live on either US Coast know all about boardwalk fortune tellers. Other people may know them in a variety of other locales. These purveyors of dubious dollops of destiny claim to know your future, and for a fee they’ll tell you. I believe they profit from our naiveté, or that wish we all have from time to time to know at least a little of what’s ahead for us. None of that exists in the pure, God - centered hearts of Mary and Joseph, as they humbly obey the Hebrew law and present their son to the Lord at the Jerusalem temple. Indeed, they have both learned something of their futures from the only qualified Source, as the Lord spoke to them through his angelic messengers. How startled they must have been when old Simeon gently took the Child in his aged arms and then praised God for letting him see the Savior. After praying his famous “Nun Dimittis” (“Now you may let me go.”) he goes on to make some powerful predictions about both the Child and His Mother. About Jesus: a sign to be contradicted. About Mary: a sword wound to be repeated. Our focus all these centuries later is not on the future, but on the family present before us in this scriptural scene. This humble, unheralded trio slowly making their way up that temple aisle, awed by all they see, and knowing what the place already meant to them as they recall their local rabbi’s teachings. They are a true family. A holy family, forever bearing witness to the nobility of that unit of society by which God chose to enter our history. Certainly the observant among us could easily draw up a list of what ails the family today. Forces in our culture that have successfully attacked and introduced corrosion to traditional family life, and have been proud of it. The daughter proceeds to tell him the sad image of youngsters allowed to bury their heads in cell phones at the family dinner table while they gobble their food and ignore their parents is just one of many. The call of our Church today is for us to take back what has been cleverly undermined if not stolen from us. To see clearly that family life has an innate importance in the secular community and in the life of our Church that is irreplaceable. The primary agents of that vision of course are parents strong enough to resist the tug of the tide. Without that leadership, supported by prayer and all of us together, you will not need a fortune teller to predict what will happen. Consider this story I’ll simply call “The Daughter.” She is a lawyer who lived 500 miles away from her elderly father. They had not seen each other in a number of months. The father calls her up and asks, “When are you going to visit?” The daughter proceeds to tell him about the demand on her time, her court schedule, meetings, and so on and so on, everything that prevented her from visiting. So the father says, “I’ve been wondering about this for some time now. When I die, do you intend to come to my funeral?” The lawyer responds, “Dad! I can’t believe you’d ask that. Of course I’d come to your funeral.” The father replies, “Good. Let’s make a deal. Forget the funeral. I need you more now than I will then.” Reflection by Rev. Nunca he oído tal nombre.
