December 25, 2014 11:00 am Holy Eucharist Rite I Christmas Day Welcome Letter from the Dean Holy Eucharist/Communion Merry Christmas and welcome to Saint Paul’s Cathedral! Holy Eucharist, also known as Communion, is open to all of the baptized of all denominations. The Episcopal Church has an open table and you are invited to participate as you feel comfortable. The ushers will direct you forward to receive the sacrament. To receive the Eucharist, place your right palm over your left and you will be given the Bread; the Wine will be offered and you may guide the chalice to your lips. If you prefer not to drink from it, leave the wafer on your palm and the chalice bearer will dip it in the cup and place it in your mouth. If you wish to receive a Blessing in lieu of the Elements, simply cross your arms over your chest. We pray that as you worship here during this Christmas season that you will join us in praising God for the gift of Jesus Christ, our Savior. We are so pleased that you chose to share your Christmas with us here at the Cathedral. Saint Paul’s Cathedral is an active and vibrant congregation of loving people. We welcome you into the community and pray that you will return and share your gifts with us as we minister to Oklahoma City and the surrounding areas. Join us on Sundays for worship and for any of our other ministry opportunities. I invite you to participate in worship today as you feel comfortable. I pray that your worship experience today will strengthen your faith journey. If this is your first time in the Episcopal Church, everything you need, to follow worship, is in this Worship Guide but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask anyone around you for help. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. BCP 161 The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. [Please kneel if you are able] Almighty God, who hast given us thy only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and as at this time to be born of a pure virgin: Grant that we, being regenerate and made thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit ever, one God, world without end. Amen. The Gloria Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo! Glory be to God on high, To all people, peace on earth, Angels, shepherds drawing nigh, Join to celebrate His birth. Lesson [You may be seated] A Reading from the Book of Isaiah. Jesus Christ, we now declare Lamb of God and Lord of Love. Grant us mercy, hear our prayer, Give us grace from heav’n above. Isaiah 62:6-12 Upon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have posted sentinels; all day and all night they shall never be silent. You who remind the LORD, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it renowned throughout the earth. The LORD has sworn by his right hand and by his mighty arm: I will not again give your grain to be food for your enemies, and foreigners shall not drink the wine for which you have labored; but those who garner it shall eat it and praise the LORD, and those who gather it shall drink it in my holy courts. Go through, go through the gates, prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway, clear it of stones, lift up an ensign over the peoples. The LORD has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to daughter Zion, “See, your salvation comes; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.” They shall be called, “The Holy People, The Redeemed of the LORD”; and you shall be called, “Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken.” Praises to the Holy One, Praises sing in highest heav’n; To the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit giv’n. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4 Psalm 97 Lesson Dominus regnavit A Reading from the Letter to the Titus. Titus 3:4-7 Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. The LORD is King; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of the isles be glad. Clouds and darkness are round about him, righteousness and justice are the foundations of his throne. A fire goes before him and burns up his enemies on every side. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees it and is afraid. [Please stand if you are able] The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. Gospel Hymn The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory. Hymnal 100, verses 1-2 Joy to the world! the Lord is come: let earth receive her King; let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing. Confounded be all who worship carved images and delight in false gods! Bow down before him, all you gods. Joy to the world! the Savior reigns; let us our songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains, repeat the sounding joy. Zion hears and is glad, and the cities of Judah rejoice, because of your judgments, O LORD. For you are the LORD, most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods. The LORD loves those who hate evil; he preserves the lives of his saints. and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Light has sprung up for the righteous, and joyful gladness for those who are truehearted. Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous, and give thanks to his holy Name. 5 Gospel When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. Luke 2:1-20 W W W The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. Gospel Hymn Hymnal 100, verses 3-4 No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground; he comes to make his blessings flow far as the curse is found. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see – I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness, and wonders of his love. Sermon [You may be seated after the sermon opening prayer] The Reverend Canon Susan Colley Joplin “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” [After the sermon there will be a moment of silence for private meditation] 6 Creed [Please stand if you are able] We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. Prayers BCP 326 Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church and the world. [Please kneel if you are able] Almighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men: Receive these our prayers which we offer unto thy divine Majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all bishops and other ministers especially Justin of Canterbury, Katharine, our Presiding Bishop, and Edward, our Bishop, and the clergy and people of the diocese of Oklahoma and our companion diocese of Uruguay, that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy Word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. We beseech thee also so to rule the hearts of those who bear the authority of government in this and every land especially, Barack, our President, Mary, our Governor, and Mick, our Mayor, that they may be led to wise decisions and right actions for the welfare and peace of the world. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. W We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor all in need of healing: [Intercessions are offered at this time] 7 And, we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, for those we hold in memory this day, and for the recently departed, (Special intentions) beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service; and to grant us grace so to follow the good examples of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Blessed Paul, and of all thy saints, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Absolution Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen. Comfortable Words BCP 332 Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, W have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him. Confession Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. John 3:16 God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 1 Timothy 1:15 This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 John 2:1-2 If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the perfect offering for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. BCP 331 Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings: the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. [Please stand if you are able] Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. BCP 332 [You may share a greeting of peace with those near you] 8 [You may be seated] [Please stand if you are able] Doxology Welcome Offertory Sentence Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host: W praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. BCP 344 Revelation 4:11 Worthy art thou, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for thou hast created all things, and by thy will they were created and have their being. Offertory Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer II, BCP 334 The Lord be with you. And with thy Spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. Text: tr. G.R. Woodward Music: Gerald Near Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! Ding dong! merrily on high in heav’n the bells are ringing: Ding dong! verily the sky is riv’n with angel singing. E’en so here below, below, let steeple bells be swungen, And io,io,io, by priest and people sungen. Pray you dutifully prime your Matin chime, ye ringers; May you beautifully rime your Eventime song, ye singers. It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God. Proper Preface for Incarnation BCP 345 Because thou didst give Jesus Christ, thine only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Ghost, was made very Man of the substance of the Virgin Mary his mother; that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become thy children. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, 9 Sanctus And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. Hymnal S114 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. W Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be W filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; [Please kneel if you are able] All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again. By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN. For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” The Lord’s Prayer Hymnal S119 And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to sing, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. 10 Fraction Communion Hymn Hymnal S154 Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Prayer of Humble Access Hymnal 78, verses 1-3,5 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. BCP 337 We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. For Christ is born of Mary; and gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth! and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth. How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. Invitation to Communion The Gifts of God for the People of God. Hymnal S158 O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! Communion of the People 11 Post-communion Prayer Let us pray. Christmas Blessing BCP 339 Book of Occasional Services May Almighty God, who sent his Son to take our nature upon him, bless you in this holy season, scatter the darkness of sin, and brighten your heart with the light of his holiness. Amen. [Please kneel if you are able] Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. May God, who sent his angels to proclaim the glad news of the Savior’s birth, fill you with joy, and make you heralds of the Gospel. Amen. May God, who in the Word made flesh joined heaven to earth and earth to heaven, give you his peace and favor. Amen.
