EXPLORING THE NEW FRONTIERS OF PERFORMANCE / MAY 5 + 6, 2015 / NEW YORK CITY
the new frontier
of performance
The current economic evolution has highlighted the limitations of our
economic model, which for decades has been based on growth,
productivity and consumerism. Now the time has come to focus on
another crucial task ahead: fostering a more human economy.
Societies and businesses throughout the world are facing the same
challenge: finding new resources to allow more balanced growth,
growth that delivers not just financial value but also the personal
fulfillment that should result from it.
“We consider Quality of Life to
be a key, yet largely unexplored
factor - a new frontier in individual
and collective performance. This
is why we are bringing together
leaders from around the world
to address the challenge it
represents as the new frontier
of performance.”
At Sodexo, we have a vision. We believe that to create lasting value,
organizations and society as a whole must make people’s wellbeing a top priority. We consider Quality of Life to be a key, yet
largely unexplored factor - a new frontier in individual and collective
performance. We are convinced that that future growth must rely
on and benefit humanity.
We are bringing together leaders from around the world to address
the challenge it represents at our first Quality of Life Conference,
in New York City, in May 2015.

the Quality of Life
Conference?
explore. discover. inspire.
benefits of attending
Sodexo, world leader in Quality of Life Services, is pleased to announce the first
Quality of Life Conference, an international meeting that will take place every two
years in different major cities around the world. This first edition will take place in
New York City on May 5-6, 2015.
to seize the potential
of this unexplored factor
By exploring the new frontiers of performance, the conference aims to engage
a collective movement of global leaders who believe that placing people’s welfare
at the heart of society and the economy is a powerful driver of performance for all.
The conference will be a unique opportunity for 300 international leaders from
a broad range of sectors — such as corporations, health, defense, education,
as well as think tanks, public authorities, civil service, NGOs, and the media
— to meet, challenge current models and be inspired by valuable experiences.
Despite different definitions of Quality of Life, it has powerful relevance in
today’s competitive world. As new growth models are needed, economists
increasingly point to the quality of life of individuals as a key to progress.
How to define Quality of Life and its components? What are the metrics
of the intangible, human and financial value derived by Quality of Life within
organizations?
to discover the diversity of Quality
of Life dimensions
Positive working conditions and healthy food options are well-known factors
in improving people’s welfare.
What about other dimensions, such as promotion of diversity, new forms of
recognition, local community empowerment or people-centered technology?
to be inspired by cross-sector
experiences
The surprising crossroads of multidisciplinary and multicultural points of view
makes the Conference’s format unique.
What can a British army general teach an Italian CEO? What can a college
dean in the U.S. and a French hospital director valuably share? Which
solution developed by a local NGO can apply to a multinational company?

Plenary Session
Opening Remarks
• Fostering a More Human Economy
While there’s no standardized definition of Quality of Life, it is certainly not an abstract notion.
Extensive studies have been carried out to better understand how individuals perceive Quality of Life.
Very clear patterns emerge, showing that factors such as health, education and social
relationships are universal components of an individual’s Quality of Life, regardless of age, gender
or country of origin.
Lasting value can only be achieved with a focus on people’s well-being. It is therefore crucial to
fully explore this topic in order to promote a more sustainable and better-performing economy.
The OECD’s Vision
• Better Policies for a Better Life: Policies to Improve
the Economic and Social Well-being of People Around the World
Stronger growth alone is not enough! We need growth that is balanced, inclusive and green,
built on resilient national institutions and effective international co-operation. Structural reforms
must aim to increase productivity, but also to reduce inequality, improve well-being, protect the
environment and to help rebuild public trust. The OECD’s approach to – “go structural, go social,
go green, go institutional, and go national” – remains as pertinent as ever.
This emphasis on the importance of a “better life” has translated into a unique international
indicator: the OECD Better Life Index.
Sodexo and the OECD
Since May 2013, Sodexo and the OECD have embarked on a three-year partnership to better
understand and to promote Quality of Life as a factor in the development and progress
of society.

interview preeminent leaders in Quality of Life
A new generation of leaders is emerging. Digital and social natives, they are more connected
than ever. Their vision of the world is more global and yet more focused on individuals.
Should the future be decided without those who will benefit from today’s changes?
It is crucial to involve the next generation in the debate and give them the opportunity to confront
their opinion with today’s leaders.

Local communities create new innovative models that transform our society.
What can businesses and global organizations learn from them?
How can community empowerment lead to improved performance for all?
9:30 - 11:00

For centuries, “recognition was money”. With five generations sharing work life,
how can we incentivize each individual? What drives people’s performance?
what does it take to become
Quality of Life leaders?
NUTRITION | Is Food the Cure?
Food science has shown that dietary changes can transform the brain structure
(chemical and physiological), which can lead to altered behavior. How does food relate
to the brain? Can we create food that boosts performance?
TECHNOLOGY | Is Advanced Technology a Sign of Progress?
Technology offers tremendous opportunity for sharing knowledge.
Will it lead to creating a knowledge society? Will some be excluded from this utopia?
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT | Open Your Mind to Performance
Personal development is not selfish; it is a public service. Is developing skills enough?
Is mindfulness the new key to increasing productivity? How can gender balance promotion
increase company performance?
Panel Discussion
• How to Find New Resources and Invent New Models for More Harmonious Growth
Being a Quality of Life leader is both an exciting and demanding commitment. It is through
effective leadership that organizations can create people-centered cultures that improve
not only well-being on an individual basis but also large-scale performance.
Respected leaders from various backgrounds, such as the armed forces, healthcare, NGO,
or the business world, share their vision on how to operate in a challenging environment and
create sustainable models.

Keynote Address
• The Courage to Change in Order to Build a More Human Society
One important role of leaders is to call for change.
Culture change is a challenge. It means doing things differently, which brings
both opportunity and hope, strife and uncertainty.
To face this challenge, leaders need the strength to fight resistance as well as the patience
to win over doubt.

the Sodexo Institute for Quality of Life
In 2009, Sodexo set out to create a resource to deepen its understanding
of Quality of Life. The resulting think-tank, the Sodexo Institute for Quality of
Life, is founded on Sodexo’s conviction that improving Quality of Life leads to
the progress of individuals and contributes to the performance of organizations. The Institute’s objective is to gather and develop insight on the drivers
of Quality of Life and their impact. It does this by developing and leveraging
relationships with external experts e.g. university academics and other
researchers around the world, by participating in conferences, convening
stakeholders and conducting its own desk-based research. The Institute
publishes a variety of viewpoints and the results of its research, it has also
has recently held external expert ‘Dialogues’ that explore Quality of Life
challenges in London, Ottawa and Mumbai.
