We know how difficult it can be to make time to attend a twohour meeting, so huge thanks to everyone who was able to make it. We tried to pack as much as possible into those two hours, and the feedback we have had so far suggests nearly everyone felt the same great buzz in the room, and really understood they were starting the ball rolling on important changes right across our Trust. Everyone in the Trust has been very busy in the run-up to Christmas, so we know that not everyone who would have liked to be involved was able to attend the Big Conversations. So we have set up an online survey to make sure those who couldn’t make it to any of the events get the chance to have their say. Changes to Signage in 2015 signage and any ne New way finding signage will be in place at WGH in early 2015 quickly followed by FGH and the RLI.The new signs and signage locations at WGH have been developed in partnership with staff and patient representatives, who have walked the site with us to ensure we will be giving the best possible help to those who visit our hospitals. This process has now started at FGH and will soon move to RLI. We are also working with colleagues to ensure that patient appointment letters will reflect the new department names. Please look out for information from Estates Corporate Services, who will be working with individual wards and departments to manage the replacement of signs in your work areas as external and internal directional signs are replaced up to ward / departmental entrances. The new way finding system is designed to help patients, visitors and staff move around our hospitals, improve the appearance of our circulation spaces by giving the new signage a consistent look and make any future signage alterations easy as our hospitals evolve and change. We are also working with partners to prepare a new replacement signage process to ensure that the signage system is kept consistently up to date. More information, including the new sign designs, will be available for all staff to view in the next few weeks. WGH Medical Records The door code to Medical Records at WGH has now been changed. Access to the department can be gained within normal working hours. Staff will be given the code on a need to know basis. With the cold weather now upon us, people will be more likely to catch the flu. In other hospitals across the North West, the influenza virus infection has already hit Intensive Care Units. This is why it is so important that patients who arrive with severe respiratory conditions and have had a fever, muscle ache and sore throat within a few days, an influenza test should be done, treatment should be started, and patients should be isolated until diagnosis established. If you need any more information on this please speak to your manager or the infection prevention team. With this in mind have you contacted a Link Nurse near you for your flu vaccination? If you have a team meeting coming up, get a link nurse along to vaccinate all your team and help the fight against flu! Historically gynaecology is very quiet over xmas as is the rest of the hospital, and this arrangement has always worked really well. This allows for appropriate annual leave to be taken, and not have staff on duty who are not required. Also we have some nursing and support worker staffing issues (sickness and recruitment) that are not yet solved: this plan allows safe and appropriate care of gynaecology patients during this period, with team working between maternity midwives and support workers. Any inpatients will be moved to a discreet bay on maternity. Any GAU patients who need to be seen can be seen by prior arrangement with the gynaecology nurse in the GAU area on ward 1 with a doctor present on an individual basis. All phones will be switched over to maternity. Dermatology Grand Christmas Raffle Dermatology held a Grand Christmas Raffle to raise funds for much-needed equipment for the department. Everyone on the unit worked tirelessly to make the raffle a success. All members of staff from Dermatology joined in by donating prizes with some local businesses also helping by donating prizes as well. The raffle was drawn on 8 December and the Christmas Hamper was won by a dermatology patient. Over £500 was raised! Thank you to everyone who took part - staff, patients and visitors from throughout the hospital helped to achieve this wonderful amount! Changes to the Hospital menu From Monday 5 January 2015, the hospital menu will no longer include ‘D = Suitable for people with Diabetes’ as a dietary code. This is in response to patient feedback as well as modernising the hospital menu so that it is in line with current dietary advice. It will also support people with Diabetes Mellitus to make their own food choices whilst they are in hospital. The hospital menu will still include a range of starters, main courses and sweets that are coded; ‘HEALTHY EATING ( )’ or ‘HIGH ENERGY (E)’, to allow patients to make their own choices about what type of food they need for their own circumstances. The Nutrition & Dietetic Team can provide wards with laminated sheets with more advice and guidance for patients with diabetes, if they wish to know more about food choices and carbohydrate whilst in hospital. Ian Dewar and Ed Northey, of the RLI and FGH respectively, spread the Christmas spirit with the help of some enthusiastic carollers. At FGH the Chaplaincy had a record number of 30 singers, which meant they could cover every ward and sing at least four carols in each. The patients and nurses had fun requesting their favourite carols and really appreciated the Christmas cheer! All the singers loved the experience, felt truly welcomed by the Hospital and all the Wards and are already looking forward to it next year. At the RLI the carolling was described by old hands as ‘the most successful to date.’ Carollers toured the wards singing for patients and staff. ‘Rudolph’ hit the mark on the children’s ward and ‘Mary’s Boy Child’ got a new twist in the Maternity Unit when a new born and parents happened to walk down the corridor whilst the choir were singing! A special thank you to all who came and everyone who helped organise these festive events! Pharmacy and Medicine Management: Antibiotic Guidelines It is important that all prescribers and nursing staff are aware of changes to the use of antibiotics. Endoscopy Christmas Opening Times Endoscopy at FGH and the RLI are closing Christmas Eve at 5pm then re-opening Monday 29th Dec at 8am. They will then close again on New Years Eve at 6pm then re-opening again on Friday 2 January 2015 at 8am. At the RLI can all wards assist by ensuring referrals for Urgent Inpatient Endoscopy are faxed to 3292 for staff to triage when we re-open. At FGH any emergency endoscopy will be provided in theatre. Roadworks on the A590 We have been given early notification about resurfacing work taking place on the A590 between Newby Bridge and Backbarrow over two weekends in January, which will cause traffic issues for people travelling between Barrow-in-Furness and the rest of the Trust area. The works will mean that the road is completely closed overnight on the following dates and any staff travelling on this section of the A590 between these times will need to make a 30-mile diversion.
