Bozard President Orlando Health Foundation and Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation It began with a promise…. Isn’t that how many truly great, noble accomplishments begin? My thoughts turn to the visionary community leaders who promised to build Arnold Palmer Hospital for the children of Central Florida; our commitment to Arnold Palmer that “good” would never be “good enough” and our donors, who generously pledge to support our mission. Editor & Writer: Camilla Chapman Writer: Tricia Weiss Foundation & Friends is published by the Orlando Health Foundation © 2011 Orlando Health T.J.’s selfless thoughts for others – people he would never know – set into motion a vision that would captivate the hearts and imaginations of countless others. His story has brought together some of the most well-known and accomplished recording artists, entertainment executives and, most recently, legendary golfer Arnold Palmer who was chosen by the T.J. Martell Foundation as the honoree of the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award. T.J., a 17-year-old high school student, was battling leukemia. He asked his father, music industry executive Tony Martell, to raise a million dollars for cancer research so that “no one else will have to experience what I am going through.” As I traveled to New York to attend the awards gala, I could not help but reflect on how one measures a life well-lived. Is it determined by how far we climb in our careers? Fame and fortune? The material possessions we accumulate? Perhaps it is as simple as linking our personal passion, our life’s work, and the resulting fruits to ultimately benefit people for generations into the future. Although Tony had no fundraising experience, he agreed. Two years later T.J. passed away, and Tony set forth on his journey to fulfill Within every person there is a story. Something meaningful that has touched and inspired them to make a difference for others through In this particular instance, it began with a promise from a father to his dying son. Please Consider a Life-Saving Gift! You may call us at 321.841.5194, send a check in the envelope enclosed or make a secure online gift at orlandohealthfoundation.com. Thank you! the promise he had made to his son. Over the years, Tony has been joined by hundreds of volunteers and musician friends, including Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, who have worked passionately to help raise more than $250 million for treatment and research – far surpassing T.J.’s million dollar dream. their gifts of time, talent, fortune or influence. Whether born from sorrow or the wings of inspiration, the resulting promises are reassuring – they evoke feelings of anticipation and good things to come. We are honored to know and be able to share a few of these stories in the following pages. From the Chatlos Foundation that is empowering our tiniest, most vulnerable patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to begin life as strong and healthy as possible (page 4); to Runway To Hope, the Give Hope Foundation and Orlando Calling that are focused on easing the plight of children affected by cancer; to those who make planned gifts through their wills or trusts (Heritage Circle, page 17); to the many others who are actively making a difference in their own way for those who we serve at Orlando Health. May they encourage you to pause and consider how others may have made your own way a little smoother, and perhaps how you may do the same…as I am choosing to do in this spring season of renewal. Why is it important to join the 1918 Society? (Photo by Shahar Azran/WireImage) Healthcare is changing and Orlando Health is at the forefront. As we approach our centennial, broad and expansive plans for new facilities are underway to accommodate innovative patient care practices, new technologies and multidisciplinary, collaborative teams. Our vision for the future is exciting but in the midst of an economic downturn, with even greater budget cuts and patient need, we simply cannot achieve this vision without the generous support of donors. Philanthropy empowers healthcare to be truly exceptional. With the generous philanthropic support of caring people, Orlando Health is providing the highest level of care in many specialties including trauma, oncology, cardiology and pediatrics. Runway to Hope Pledges $1 Million to Arnold Palmer Hospital Funds Will Help Pediatric Brain Tumor Program Expand Research, Education and Technology Created in 2011 by founders Mark and Josie NeJame, the non-profit Runway To Hope is already making an impact on the Central Florida community. Thanks to the success of its annual fundraising events and the support base it has developed, Runway To Hope pledged $1 million over seven years to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program at Arnold Palmer Hospital. Be CONNECTED TO A GOOD CAUSE. Runway To Hope’s mission is to serve and provide direct support to the children and families in the Central Florida community who have been impacted by pediatric cancer. The organization’s annual Spring Fashion Soiree is a starstudded event, featuring approximately 30 children, ages two to 18, who either are battling or have overcome cancer. The children walk the runway arm-in-arm with one of the dozens of national and local celebrity escorts. The event has focused much attention on kids dealing with cancer, and has also garnered several muchdeserved awards, including Best Charity Event from Orlando Business Journal, and the Award for Excellence in Fundraising by a Nonprofit Organization from the Association of Fundraising Professionals. But the Runway To Hope team says the biggest reward will be watching the impact their $1 million gift will make on the patients of Arnold Palmer Hospital, as the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program continues to grow. “Runway To Hope’s commitment and contribution to Arnold Palmer Hospital will have a tangible effect on countless children and families in Central Florida,” says John Bozard, president, Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation. “We applaud their commitment to this community and their decision to keep all of the funds raised here in the Orlando area.” Proceeds from the Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by MasterCard ® benefit Arnold Palmer Medical Center. The volunteer organization provides support in a variety of ways to children and families in Central Florida who are battling childhood cancer. In addition to their pledge to Arnold Palmer Hospital, the Give Hope Foundation also operates the Give Hope Hero Program to help grant a wish or, more often, much needed basic assistance to these families. “We, unfortunately, all know someone who has had cancer,” says Pete Piacenti, president, Give Hope Foundation. “It is a horrible disease when it strikes at any age, but somehow, when it affects a child, it seems even worse, and you feel even more helpless. The Give Hope Foundation was created to try and make a difference in the lives of the families battling cancer – meeting them at their time of greatest need.” “The Give Hope Foundation is making a real and profound impact on the lives of our patients here at Arnold Palmer Hospital,” states Tori Spradlin, vice president, Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation. Music fans unite to drum up support for the new Pediatric Brain Tumor Program at Arnold Palmer Hospital. The “My Healing Harmony” Music Therapy Program at Arnold Palmer Hospital was founded in 2010 through a generous grant from Joey Fatone and the Fatone Family Foundation. Music therapy can reduce nausea, pain and anxiety and give emotional support to children during their procedures. Led by a credentialed music therapist, children can take part in expressive group or individual activities such as songwriting, playing instruments and performing – and even record their own songs and produce music videos in the music studio. No musical skills or experience are necessary to participate, and patients of all ages can benefit. We need your help to keep the music playing. Arnold Palmer Hospital’s Music Therapy Program relies on your support to serve young patients. Please join us, so that together, we can let the music play on! On Friday, November 11, families joined together at the mall to kick off the holiday season and welcome Santa as he arrived on the rooftop. A donation of $10 per family of four was requested to enter the extraordinary outdoor winter scene, complete with food, music, dancing and entertainment by stilt walkers, magicians, Mrs. Claus and other characters from the Mall’s “Hollyville” Christmas Village. Each year, the dollars raised have benefited programs at Arnold Palmer Hospital that are critical to caring for the specialized needs of pediatric patients. At the 16th Annual CMAA Charity Golf Tournament, held at Orlando’s most revered golf destination, Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge, CMAA raised another $30,000, elevating the total giving in the event’s history to more than $321,000. “We couldn’t be more proud to be the host venue this year for such an important event,” says Ray Easler, general manager, Bay Hill Club & Lodge. “It is our privilege to serve the community and Arnold Palmer Hospital. Knowing the role this plays in improving the lives of these special children and their families cannot be put into words.” The proceeds from this year’s tournament benefit the Hewell Kids’ Kidney Center at Arnold Palmer Hospital, which cares for children suffering from chronic kidney disease. “The support we receive from the CMAA tournament is instrumental in offering the highest level of care to the children and families we treat,” says Jorge Ramirez, MD, director, Pediatric Nephrology at Arnold Palmer Hospital. In 2011, Arnold Palmer Hospital received more than 7,000 inpatient and outpatient visits from children seeking treatment for some form of kidney disease. Success of the event is due in large part to the efforts of major sponsor, Glenmorangie, 140 participants and CMAA members and volunteers from the UCF Rosen School of Hospitality CMAA Student Chapter. Additional sponsors included Jet Blue Challenge, Sysco, Titleist and Musty Putters. After four consecutive years at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, the 2012 tournament will take place at Isleworth Golf & Country Club on September 10, 2012. Carlisle & Margaret Tippit Leaving a Legacy C. Carlisle and Margaret Tippit lived lives focused on serving their community - a legacy that will long survive both of them. Even after losing her husband in 2003, Margaret continued her involvement with several charities throughout the country until she passed late last year. Known by family and friends as Tip and Margie, they were beloved parents, grandparents and philanthropists. Tip and Margie traveled the world, touring 190 countries together. They were blessed with five children and 21 grandchildren. In addition, they were strong supporters of Arnold Palmer Hospital, giving through a variety of planned gifts including charitable trusts and life insurance to create a philanthropic legacy that will continue for many years. Charitable trusts are an excellent way to provide income for you and your family, receive significant income and estate tax benefits, and create a lasting legacy at Orlando Health. Life insurance provides an opportunity to make a meaningful yet relatively low-cost gift, it offers immediate tax benefits and supports the life-saving work of our hospitals. “Tip and Margie were great friends to Arnold Palmer Hospital,” says John Bozard, president, Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation. “We are honored that the Tippits chose our mission to support during their lives and appreciate their use of planned giving, which will continue providing support for generations of children at Arnold Palmer Hospital.” Tip and Margie will both be deeply missed by the Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation. Securing the Future through Endowment Many of Orlando Health’s programs and facilities require continuous charitable funding to support their operations. As a donor, choosing to establish a permanent endowment can help ensure that the future needs of these costly yet critical programs remain available to our community. An endowment is a permanent fund established to benefit an institution for a specific purpose chosen by the donor. In an endowment fund, the principal is invested and only a portion of the investment earnings are spent. The rest of the earnings are directed back into the fund, so that the endowment grows over time, becoming a perpetual source of funding for whatever the donor wishes to achieve. Following is a listing of endowments that have been established at Orlando Health. Donors may choose to contribute to one of these or establish their own. It’s in that light that I share the following: I recently found myself smack dab in the middle of a major health crisis. I didn’t get there by chance. It was not a random “happening.” Approximately four years ago, my brother was diagnosed with a genetic heart condition. Rather than writing it off as “his problem,” I was proactive with my own health and proceeded to be tested for the condition. I was relieved to learn that I did not have the same condition but was surprised to learn I had “an issue” of my own. Mine was one that is typically only discovered post-mortem… Wow! How lucky was I to have found it early! I have since made a full-recovery and am stronger than ever…but that is because I was proactive in making decisions to improve my health. Lee A. O’Donnell, BSE Corporate Manager Lifestyle Medicine Each winter, Orlando Health hosts gatherings across the organization to recognize our volunteers and their tremendous contributions toward caring for our patients. Ann Alexander, Physician Relations Manager and Shirley Kearney, Dr. P. Phillips Hospital Volunteer You can be proactive in ensuring you live a long and rewarding life as well. It does not have to be through medical tests, diagnostic procedures and/or treatments. It can be through your daily habits and actions. Taking it back to the spring theme, I have listed six helpful hints for taking control and being proactive in your health! Now is the perfect time to “spring” into action. You are the only person who can take responsibility for your health and well-being. Be proactive to live a happy and healthy life. 22 S P R I N G SIMPLE. PLAN ahead. REMEMBER IDENTIFY NO excuses. GET started Keep it simple. (No need to say any more here…) Think it through. Write it down. Whatever the change you are undertaking, be deliberate. If you fail to plan, then you are planning to fail. the “why” behind your actions. WHY are you going for a walk? WHY did you request your salad dressing on the side? WHY did you call your loved ones today? incentives. What is it you want to get out of your efforts? More mobility? Healthier tests results? See your children get married? Play with your grandchildren? Period. There is rarely a valid, logical reason to not make a positive change. Yes, it takes conscious effort. And, yes, it can be challenging. But is anything worthwhile ever easy? today. Right now. There’s no time like the present. Dr. P. Phillips Hospital Volunteers, Shirley Stanton and Doris Gindin, are big winners. during holiday games!
