Reflections on the Pope’s Universal Prayer Intention - Peace
That those from diverse religious traditions and all people of good will may work
together for peace.
It has been said that the first casualty in a war is the truth. That may be so, but the fact remains that
wars are often caused by lack of truth. Jesus declared “I am the truth” (John 14: 6) and told Pontius
Pilate “For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth” (John 18: 37).
Because he is the Son of God, Jesus is the truth about who God is, and, because he is fully human, he is
the truth about the human person.
What is that truth? First, that God is Love, love that is willing to give all, even life itself, for the good of
the beloved. Second, that the human person is precious to God, precious
enough to die for.
When this truth is denied, the human person becomes subhuman, an
object, or a threat. It becomes easy to destroy a mass of cells viewed as a
threat. The human person may seem like a cancer on humanity and be
treated as such, rather than as an individual for whom Jesus suffered & died.
We began this month with the annual World Day of Peace. The theme Pope
Francis has chosen for this day is “Slaves No More, But Brothers and Sisters.”
That theme confronts one of the root causes of war—seeing others as objects
to be enslaved, bought, and sold. So we pray that all people of good will from all the world’s religious
traditions may know and hold fast to the truth of the human person and work together for peace.
Reflection: What are some practical ways in which I can remember that others, including my enemies,
are precious to God? Scripture: James 4: 1-12 Where do the wars and conflicts among you come from?

Locks of Love While I was in Cologne, Germany, last October I saw all these
padlocks on bridges. I had seen them in other cities in Europe cities as well. I
often wondered what they were so I asked our guide. He told me they were
“Locks of Love” and had been around for over 100 years but started to really
catch on in the early 2000s. Couples have been decorating bridges with locks as a
sign of locking their hearts, inspired by a melancholy Serbian tale of World War I
wherein young women from Vrnjačka Banja wanted to protect their loves so they started writing down
their names, with the names of their loved ones, on padlocks and affixing them to the railings of the
bridge and a more recent story described in a novel by novelist Federico Moccia in which a couple place
a bicycle lock around a lamppost and throw the key into the Tiber River in Rome. I thought that was a
great idea so we’re seeking a permit for a small chain link fence near
parking spaces 368 - 372. On Feb. 15 we invite you to bring a decorated
padlock to Mass. We will bless them and invite you to place the lock on the
special fence we will provide. More details and
instructions will be forthcoming.

Stewardship Thought: “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not
worthy to stoop down and untie.”
(Mark 1:7)
We are put on this earth to love God, love our neighbor and make disciples. How many times does our own pride and
ego get in the way on fulfilling God’s plan for us? Humbling ourselves before God and putting Him first in all things
should be our top priority.
