Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News. . Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Angelic Warfare Confraterinity Enrollment World Meeting of Families 2015 Philadelphia, September 22nd-25th Interested in the Attending the World Meeting of Families? In January, on the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, our parish will have a group enrollment ceremony for the Angelic Warfare Confraternity conducted by Fr. Kauth. The Angelic Warfare Confraternity is a supernatural fellowship of Catholic men and women dedicated to pursuing chastity together under the patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Blessed Virgin Mary. In his own life, St. Thomas Aquinas received a special grace of chastity and purity; therefore he is an extremely powerful intercessor for those seeking to practice chastity according to their state in life. This confraternity originated in the 1400′s and was officially founded for the whole Church in 1727 by Pope Benedict XII. All baptized Christians, married and unmarried, are called to live chastely. However, sexual purity can be very difficult to maintain in our culture. The Angelic Warfare Confraternity is an effective way to seriously pursue the virtue of chastity with the prayers of other confraternity members and the communion of saints in heaven. Date & Time: Wednesday, January 28th after the 7:00pm Mass. Who Can Enroll: All men and women, married and single, old and young, who desire to pursue the virtue of chastity, are invited to formally enroll in the confraternity. What You Will Need: $5 enrollment packet which includes a saint medal, info booklets, prayer cards, etc. Sign-ups will be in the narthex after all Masses on January 10th & 11th for anyone wishing to enroll. We’ll collect the $5 at that time and distribute the packets to all enrollees at the January 28th Mass. Get more detailed info: www.angelicwarfareconfraternity.org St. Thomas Aquinas will be planning preparation Catechesis events for families who plan to attend or who cannot attend but would still like to participate. If you are interested in helping plan or organize these monthly events leading into the World Meeting of Families, please contact Andi Walsh in the office at (704) 5491607 x207 or email at volunteers@stacharlotte.com. “Mary Garden” Showers As a new outreach of our Respect Life Ministry, we will be starting a program called “Mary Garden Showers”, a community supported baby shower for mothers in need. The Respect Life Ministry would like to invite people who are interested in working on the planning, organizing, and staffing these events. The goal is to host the first event in February 2015. If you are interested and would like to help support this life choosing ministry, please contact Kaitlyn Mason at kcsmit4@yahoo.com. Please visit the website marygardenshowers.org. Treasures From Our Tradition In the 1560s, the Council of Trent attempted to standardize the widely variant customs for the pastoral care of the sick and dying. We had inherited a practice called “extreme unction,” from the Latin words meaning anointing at the point of death. The deeper tradition, however, is about the prayer of faith that will heal and restore the sick person, and is straight from the Letter of James. The Fathers went back to the beginning, and while not discarding the “extreme unction” name, made a plea for the proper use of this sacrament. As soon as a person is in danger of death from sickness or old age, they reasoned, the time for the sacrament had already arrived. As a result of this desire, the next ritual text for anointing contained an innovation: a rite for visiting the sick that included readings from scripture, psalms, and prayers. Old customs fade slowly, however, and the quality of pastoral care languished for centuries while people delayed the celebration of a consoling and effective sacrament, sometimes missing the opportunity completely. A priest ministering to a dying and unconscious patient alone in a room has never been the desire of the Church. Our tradition is far too rich for this sacrament to be celebrated in such a diminished and ungenerous manner. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. www.stacharlotte.com The Baptism of the Lord January 11, 2015 Combined Mission Collection The Combined Mission Collection will be taken at all Masses next weekend. Your contribution to the good work of these organizations will give you an opportunity to participate in the missionary activity of the Church on both a local and world level. Please take the time to read the brochure sent to you by Msgr. West, give prayerful thought to your level of participation and respond with a generous contribution. The envelope for this collection can be found in your parish envelope packet. Divine Mercy Holy Hour Pope Saint John Paul II said, "Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love.
