PASTOR’S PAGE
“How Wondrous are your
works, Oh Lord!”
The Constitution on the Sacred
Liturgy was the first major
document to come from the Vatican
Council (1962-1965). It called for
the “full, conscious and active participation” (of all
the people) in liturgical celebrations, which is
demanded by the very nature of the liturgy.”
I had been raised from my earliest experiences
of Mass in Latin, to understand the holy sacrifice of
the Mass in a vertical way. In other words, my
spirituality at Mass, was wholly directed to God. I
prayed my missal with Latin on one side of the page
and English on the other, very much alone in the
privacy of my seat in a pew. I was not especially
aware of the people seated around me. There was
almost complete silence in the church. The emphasis
was on a God who was transcendent, mysterious,
and completely other than what I was. This God
could only be approached, and become intimate with
me, when I dared to receive the Body and Blood of
Christ, in the form of the Sacred Host as I knelt
before the altar.
The Second Vatican Council document on the
liturgy made it clear that the Eucharist was not only
an awesome and mysterious celebration, but also a
celebration of the Church; the community of
disciples who followed Jesus Christ and made him
present in the world. In fact, through Baptism and
the power of the Holy Spirit, Christ is present in
each of us individually, and collectively as a people
of God. God remains mysterious and ultimately
beyond human comprehension, yet as the Christmas
message makes clear, God has also become one of
us. This God is present in each and every one of us,
ever to be adored and glorified. I adore and praise
Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament, and
equally I am challenged to adore and praise the
Christ who is present in every human being.
2
U
The Council restored both dimensions of our
spirituality: the vertical and the horizontal. Both
dimensions of spirituality are held together in a kind
of tension. God is as near to me as my heart beat
and my breathing. God is my life breath. Yet God
remains an awesome God ever to be adored in
Majesty. Saint John Paul II wrote that the faithful
must realize that, because of their common
priesthood received in Baptism, “they participate in
the offering of the Eucharist.”
Cardinal Joseph Bernardin wrote about the place
where the people of God worship, our gathering
place during the Mass.
“This building called a ‘church’ is a kind of living
room of the family of God – it is our room when we
assemble as the church. Here we are at home. Its
style differs from parish to parish. Its architecture
and decoration may be in one tradition or another.
What matters most is that the room allows us all to
gather closely, see one another’s faces, be truly
present to one another. The common focus is the
holy table and near it the chair of the presider and
stand (the pulpit or Ambo) where the Scriptures are
read. But liturgy is not a performance, and we are
no audience. Liturgy is an activity, and the room
itself should help this happen.”
And Cardinal Roger Mahony, in his letter about the
Eucharist wrote -”We do not choose between
solemnity and festivity, between reverence and
community. The vertical and horizontal dimensions
of liturgy must be held together to work for us.”
Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year 2015!
Peace and Love, Father Bruce

Bulletin Reflection:
Sunday:
Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. The US
Bishops’ Pastoral on Stewardship reminds us that Baptism gives us a share in His priestly work and calls us “to
offer up the world and all that is in it -especially ourselves
- to the Lord of all.”
Living Stewardship:
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish
who answer their baptismal call by placing their gifts and
resources, their very selves, at God’s service not only in
the Church but in the world.

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year from Family Ministry
On Christmas Eve, the families and children of our parish came together once again for the
traditional Family Mass pageant – some of these families have been involved more than 15
years!
Several of our Angels & Shepherds started out as Baby Jesus. And our director this year,
Brianna McNulty, started out as an Angel!Thank you to all the families involved – and to Brianna
McNulty, Christina Hill, Annie Mehta and Kelly, Nicolette and Gianna Galvez for coordinating the
evening.
Special thanks to the Padden Family for once again providing beautiful music!
This pageant continues to be a wonderful prayerful experience and a great way to highlight the
beauty of Christmas! If you would like to learn how to be involved next year, please send an
email to mrsbmcnulty@yahoo.com
Fr. Gus presided over the Family Mass Christmas Eve Liturgy and gave a special blessing to all
expecting Mothers and our very youngest parishioners!
Please continue to pray all year for the strength of our Catholic Families!

ST. KILIAN WEEK AT A GLANCE
The renovation and expansion of the St. Kilian
church building involved extensive listening to parishioners.
Church buildings are extremely important in the lives of the
people who worship in them. This is because the building
itself stimulates our memories of sacraments being
celebrated (daily and weekly mass, baptisms, funerals,
confessions, anointing’s of the sick, worship and prayer).
The environment of St. Kilian church became a place of
profound adoration and praise of God during this past
Advent and Christmas. The sacrament of baptism, which we
have all received, obliges us to participate actively in
worship as partners with one another and not as spectators.
We do so with profound joy and gratitude to God.
I am deeply grateful for all who came to Mass and other
services, participating in our Advent and Christmas liturgies.
Our prayer spoke of our deep love for God and for one
another. Our prayer changed our hearts and minds to take
on the heart and mind of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our priests and deacons, choirs, musicians, leaders of
song, altar servers, Eucharistic ministers, lectors and ushers/
greeters made our environment for prayer uplifting and
transformative. The Ecumenical Advent Prayer Service in
December, with combined choirs from our Protestant
brothers and sisters joined our own choir in unity and
concord. We prayerfully listened to readings from the
Advent/Christmas Scriptures and saying the praises of the
Lord together. Be sure to put it on your calendar for next
Advent. It will save you a trip to Manhattan.
Members of our Altar Guild decorated and enhanced our
worship area with floral arrangements. Our Family Ministry
beautifully recalled the birth of the Messiah in their
Christmas pageant.
Because of your generous donations both in the Gift Star
Program reaching out to needy families at Christmas, but
also in the Christmas second collection for Parish Outreach,
we were able to make the Christmas message of giving a
strong statement of our love for the Lord and our neighbor.
Many blessings to you in 2015, and thank you for
bringing the good news alive at St. Kilian Parish!
Peace, Father Bruce

It is that time of the year again. If you have a cold
or feel one coming on, please do not receive from the
chalice. Also do not feel obligated to shake hands at the
Sign of Peace; a smile a word and a wave will do; and do
not be offended if someone does not offer their hand.
If you are sick there is no obligation to attend
Mass. Personal prayer and reflection on the scriptures is
encouraged as well as viewing the Mass on television. We
are all encouraged to use common sense in these matters; to do all that we can to maintain health, wellness and
limit the exposure to infection. Most importantly let’s keep
in our prayers those of our parish community who are ill
and are not able to participate at the liturgy with us.
