That presentation was well attended and well received. Many of us will be enjoying extended time off with family over the next couple weeks and then it will be back to business after the first of the year. Before that happens, I’d like to reflect on this past year and make some predictions for 2015. We voted in a new board, which should infuse our merry band with fresh ideas and a younger demographic. We started 2014 with some great technical presentations including Pure Water System Design followed by Life Safety and Business Continuity by way of fire protection. In March we had a great presentation by the SF PUC & DPH on the topic of On-Site Non-Potable Water Reuse. We followed that up with an in depth four hour technical symposium on Pure Water System Design by Leo We had a productive board meeting in August followed by our sean kickoff meeting in September featuring our own VP Technical, Pius Kao, discussing changes effecting plumbing in the 2013 Title 24 Energy Efficiency Standard. A very popular topic in our area deals with seismic restraint issues and October’s technical presentation addressed that. Many thanks to Michael Tosunian with Eaton B-Line for that presentation. November ushered in our first ASPE Young Professional (AYP) gathering at the Thirsty Bar. Thank you Lindy Damato, our AYP Liason. We look forward to more events that attract this demographic. This event was followed a week later with a very interesting presentation on the Living Building Challenge presentation by Dylan Connelly of Integral Group. In December we had our annual holiday party and food bank fundraiser. I haven’t seen any figures on what was collected and distributed but I know that every little bit helps. Regarding predictions for the New Year, I predict that in spite of rumors that have been circulation, San Francisco ASPE will continue to meet regularly at Sinbad’s on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. 5 3 2 1 www.aspesf.org January 2015 Hans Kaufmann Continued SF ASPE wishes you and your family the happiest of Holidays and a healthy and prosperous New Year! In January, we will have an ASPE Society CEU certified presentation on Grease Interceptors. Mr. Chris Atwell, the National Technical Representative for Canplas’ Commercial Grease Management and Residential Greywater Recycling systems, will present the latest Commercial Grease Management technology, code requirements, local jurisdiction FOG management and enforcement expectations, and how to properly size grease interceptors. This hand on training will provide you with the correct procedure for handling Fats, Oil, and Grease (FOG) discharge. Come mingle with your fellow plumbing and fire protection professionals, and learn the latest to help you in your project. In the November meeting, Mr. Dylan Connelly of the Integral Group presented the Living Building Challenge. Many of us are involved with LEED projects and understand the current process of providing calculations that predict the performance of the building based on certain guidelines. We all know predictions are many times off the mark. The Living Building Challenge ups the ante and wants us to actually monitor the performance of the building. This expectation is the Real Truth of how our buildings are performing. The trending actually shows that the building is NetZero or NetPositive. Yes, Dylan also told us NetZero is good but we should be targeting for NetPositive Water and Energy performance. You say that it is not possible? Dylan actually presented data that show that innovative engineers have already designed, constructed and occupied NetPositive buildings. For me this is very exciting as Living Building Challenge wants the plumbing industry to improve more than just conserving water. Mahalo! There is no pleasure in having nothing to do; the fun is in having lots to do and not doing it. Never argue with a fool, people may not know the difference. Lead me not into temptation (I can find the way myself). You can't skip and be unhappy at the same time.
