South Australia Bushfires
January 2015
Purpose of this form
The ex-gratia payment will provide financial assistance to New Zealand citizens living in
Australia who hold a non-protected special category visa (subclass 444) and who are
adversely affected by the South Australia Bushfires in January 2015. The Australian Government
Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) has been made available from 6 January 2015.
Who is eligible for
assistance
You, your partner and/or children may be eligible to receive the ex-gratia payment if you:
• are a New Zealand non-protected special category visa holder (subclass 444) in a disaster
declared local government area (LGA) where the AGDRP has been activated
• are 16 years of age or older
• have not already received an ex-gratia payment or an AGDRP for the disaster (not including
the Ex-gratia Income Support Allowance or the Disaster Recovery Allowance)
• have experienced one or more of the following:
– you have been seriously injured as a direct result of the disaster
– you are the immediate family member of a person who died as a direct result of the
disaster
– your home has been destroyed or has sustained major damage
– you are the principal carer of a dependent child who has experienced any of the
above,
and
• have participated in the Australian tax system for at least one year in the past 3 financial
years, 2011–2012, 2012–2013, 2013–2014 or are currently engaged in income generating
activities with a likelihood of paying tax in Australia on or before 6 January 2016.
Evidence of damage to your home may be required before we can approve your claim.
You may also be eligible to receive the ex-gratia assistance for any adult currently living
with you, who is financially dependent on you and who does not pay taxes in Australia,
if they were also affected by the disaster.
Who is a non-protected People who arrive in Australia on New Zealand passports are generally issued special
category visas on arrival. Generally, you will be a non-protected special category visa holder

How much will be paid The ex-gratia assistance for New Zealand non-protected special category visa holders is a
one-off payment for people who have been adversely affected by the disaster.
If you are eligible you will receive:
• $1,000 per adult
• $400 for each child (under 16 years of age).

How long do I have to
claim
You have until 6 July 2015 to complete and lodge your claim for this payment.
How will payments be
made
Payments will be made to an Australian bank, building society or credit union account held
in your name. A joint account is acceptable. If you do not have an account please talk to us
about alternative arrangements.

If you have a partner and your partner is also claiming, they can use this form or complete
a separate form.
What else you will
need to provide
Before you can get paid, you (and your partner) may need to show us:
• proof of identity (e.g. driver licence or passport)
• that you hold a New Zealand non-protected special category visa
• that you have participated in the Australian tax system for at least one year in the past
3 financial years, 2011–2012, 2012–2013, 2013–2014 or are currently engaged in income
generating activities with a likelihood of paying tax in Australia on or before 6 January
2016 by providing evidence such as a letter of employment from your employer, and
• evidence that you are eligible for this payment (e.g. hospital admission, evidence of
damage to principal home).
If you have any difficulty in obtaining or providing these documents, you should contact us
as soon as possible by calling 180 22 66.
If you are unable to provide this documentation because you have lost your tax records in
the fire you can obtain a copy of your notice of assessment from the Australian Taxation
Office.
Note: If you cannot demonstrate that you have paid tax, or are likely to, you should still lodge
a claim and we will contact you to discuss your circumstances further.
