Why? For the Christian, mercy is the highest form of Godliness. As the recipients of God’s mercy through Jesus Christ, we apply mercy and compassion toward others. We do this because the core element of mercy is the core element of God: love. Author Henry Blackaby talks about the wonderful way Jesus restores those who fail Him. Our Lord does not criticize or humiliate. Nor does He ask us to make a resolution to try harder. Rather, God simply asks us to reaffirm our love for Him. Peter failed Jesus, first fleeing for his life in the garden of Gethsemane and later publicly denying that he knew Jesus. However, when Jesus caught up to Peter following the crucifixion and resurrection, He did not point out Peter’s unfaithfulness and failures. No, He asked Peter, “Do you love Me?” Love is the single most important factor to God and is the content of the first and second commandments. In fact, the first four commandments invite us to love God and the last six implore us to love others. Love is what God wants most from us, and love is what He hopes we will share. Jesus does not need our resolutions, our recommitments, or promises to try harder. If our resolve to do better with God last year did not help us to be more faithful, chances are it will not help us succeed this year. Scripture tells us that Jesus prefers compassion over sacrifice. He asks for our love, because when we truly love Him, our service for God in the new year will be of the quality He desires— a life saturated with His mercy—receiving and extending it! Scripture Memory Verse Now when Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the house. The Priest could not enter the house of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled the Lord’s house. All the sons of Israel, seeing the fire come down and the glory of the Lord upon the house, bowed down on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave praise to the Lord, saying, “Truly He is good, truly His lovingkindness is everlasting.” 2 Chronicles 7:1-3 1/11 1/12 1/13 1/14 1/15 1/16 1/17 Luke 10:21-42 Luke 11:1-28 Luke 11:29-54 Luke 12:1-31 Luke 12:32-59 Luke 13:1-17 Luke 13:18-35 Genesis 18 Genesis 19 Genesis 20 Genesis 21 Genesis 22 Genesis 23 Genesis 24 Psalm 11 Psalm 12 Psalm 13 Psalm 14 Psalm 15 Psalm 16 Psalm 17 Read the Bible through the Year month of January!
