Believe the Unbelievable Januar y 10, 11 & 12, 2015 Emanuel Ev. Lutheran Church A Growth and Learning Center New London, WI Believe the Unbelievable BELLS & WELCOME OPENING HYMN..................................... “On Eagles’ Wings” – CW 440 You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, Who abide in his shadow for life, Say to the Lord: “My refuge, My rock in whom I trust!” Refrain: And he will raise you up on eagles’ wings, Bear you on the breath of dawn, Make you to shine like the sun, And hold you in the palm of his hand. Snares of the fowler will never capture you, And famine will bring you no fear; Under his wings your refuge, His faithfulness your shield. Refrain: For to his angels he’s given a command To guard you in all of your ways; Upon their hands they will bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. Refrain: CONFESSION OF SINS M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. | 1 Page M: C: M: C: Brothers and sisters in Christ, in the book of Romans Paul says: At just the right time, while we were still powerless, Christ died for us. God knows exactly what we need and when we need it. Yet in our sinful weakness we find ourselves questioning God and his slowness to come to our aid. Or lack of trust is sin and yet another symptom of how corrupt and lost we are. It’s a call to humble ourselves before Almighty God, confess our sins to him, and seek his mercy. We confess: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior, Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on my a sinner. Lord, Have Mercy (Kyrie) M: M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. | 2 Page RESPONSIVE HYMN ..................... “Alleluia! Let Praises Ring” – CW 241 vv. 1,4 Alleluia! Let praises ring! To God the Father let us bring Our songs of adoration. To him through everlasting days Be worship, honor, pow’r, and praise Whose hand sustains creation. Singing, Ringing: Holy, holy, God is holy. Spread the story Of our God, the Lord of glory. Alleluia! Let praises ring! Unto our triune God we sing; Blest be his name forever! With angel hosts let us adore And sing his praises more and more For all his grace and favor. Singing, Ringing: Holy, holy, God is holy. Spread the story Of our God the Lord of glory! PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. M: Let us pray. Father God, you are all-wise and all-loving. You see the present, the past, and the future. In every life situation you know what is best for us. C: | 3 Page M: C: Keep us mindful of your love and goodness, so that we put all our trust in you, even when we cannot see clearly the path that lies before us. M: We pray in Jesus’ name. He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Please be seated. LESSON ...........................................................1 Kings 17:17-24 (p. 349) God could have chosen to heal the widow’s son and spare him from death. Instead, God chose to reveal his power to bring life out of death. PSALM .............................................................................. Psalm 31 – CW p. 77 | 4 Page In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; deliver me in your righteousness. Be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. Into your hands I commit my spirit, redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth. Refrain: My times are in your hands; save me in your unfailing love. How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you. You heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain: GOSPEL LESSON .................................................Luke 8:40-56 (p. 1025) Jesus’ miracles prove that God can provide for us even in seemingly impossible situations. APOSTLE’S CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. | 5 Page From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY ........... “The Will of God Is Always Best” – CW 435 The will of God is always best And shall be done forever. And they who trust in him are blest; He will forsake them never. He helps indeed In time of need; He chastens with forebearing. They who depend on God, their friend, Shall not be left despairing. God is my comfort and my trust, My hope and life abiding, And to his counsel, wise and just, I yield, in him confiding. The very hairs, His Word declares, Upon my head he numbers. By night and day God is my stay; He never sleeps nor slumbers. Lord, this I ask; oh, hear my plea— Deny me not this favor; When Satan sorely troubles me, Then do not let me waver. Keep watch and ward, O gracious Lord; Fulfill your faithful saying; All who believe By grace receive An answer to their praying. | 6 Page When life’s brief course on earth is run And I this world am leaving, Grant me to say, “Your will be done,” Your faithful Word believing. My heav’nly Friend, I now commend My soul into your keeping, O’er sin and hell And death as well Through you the vict’ry reaping. SERMON .............................................................Luke 8:40-56 (p. 1025) “Believe the Unbelievable” CREATE IN ME OFFERING…………………………………………Early Childhood Christmas Viedo Please sign the Friendship Registers located at the end of the pew. Please stand. | 7 Page PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: C: M: C: M: C: M: C: Jesus Christ, Lord of glory, you delight in making yourself known to us and others. Bring us to recognize and rejoice in your majesty and your ministry. In love you chose to exercise your greatest strength to serve us in our greatest need. You revealed the brightness of your glory through humble deeds of love. You called ordinary men to do extraordinary things as your disciples and apostles. You also call us confidently to follow you, diligently to learn from you, and lovingly to imitate you. Equip and empower us to serve you and our neighbor faithfully. Use us as your witnesses to bring many throughout the world to the light of your gospel. You revealed your glory through mighty signs and wonders. Assure us that you still rule all things in the universe and use them to serve our eternal good. In wise compassion you often exercise your power to help and heal people with physical and emotional needs. Give us courage and compassion to relieve the distress of the hurting, to pray for all according to their needs, and to be content and cheerful when in your wisdom you ask us to endure hardship. Special prayers and intercessions. M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent Prayer. M: Preserve your truth among us, and by that truth preserve us until you appear in dazzling splendor to bring us to the glory of heaven. | 8 Page C: Let our anticipation of the heavenly kingdom ennoble our thinking and speaking, enrich our conduct, and increase our joy in all aspects of earthly life. M: Hear us, Light of the Gentiles and Glory of Israel. Amen. THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. SERMON HYMN .............. “Savior, Again to Thy Dear Name” – CW 321 Savior, again to thy dear name we raise With one accord our parting hymn of praise. Once more we bless thee ere our worship cease, Then, lowly bending, wait thy word of peace. Grant us thy peace upon our homeward way; With thee began, with thee shall end the day. Guard thou the lips from sin, the hearts from shame, That in this house have called upon thy name. Grant us thy peace, Lord, through the coming night; Turn thou for us its darkness into light. From harm and danger keep thy people free, For dark and light are both alike to thee. | 9 Page Grant us thy peace throughout our earthly life, Our balm in sorrow and our stay in strife. Then, when thy voice shall bid our conflict cease, Call us, O Lord, to thine eternal peace. CLOSING PRAYER M: C: M: C: M: C: Heavenly Father, how our hearts yearn to express our love for you! Thank you for your grace. Thank you for knowing exactly what we need before we even ask. Thank you for never abandoning us or leaving our children begging for bread. We find comfort in knowing that the very hairs on our heads are all numbered. Therefore, we are not afraid because we know how much you value us. We praise you, Lord, for you have shown us the wonders of your unfailing love. Amen. THE BLESSING M: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. Presiding Minister & Message – Pastor Marcus Schulz Organist – Mr. Klint Kaddatz | 10 Page January Sermon Series Supernatural: Believe the Unbelievable Wherever Jesus traveled, he found himself surrounded by crowds of needy people. The blind, the lame, the deaf, the chronically sick — they were captivated by Jesus because he did what no one else could. He provided a supernatural way out of their suffering and misery. Jesus’ miracles are an enigma to many. How could anyone do the extraordinary things Jesus did? Many today respond by denying that Jesus performed miracles. They claim that his disciples fabricated the miracle accounts to add credibility to their story. Yet Jesus’ miracles are crucial to our understanding of who he is, and what he continues to do for us every day. We run to Jesus because, like the crowds that surrounded Jesus, we too are in desperate need. And only Jesus offers a supernatural solution to our everyday struggles. January 17-19: Can’t Make Ends Meet? In these troubled financial times we fear that we will not have what we need for ourselves or our families. Yet the One who made us can do amazing things as he provides for us. January 24-26: Anxious? We’ve all experienced an “impossible” situation in our lives. We thought there was no solution, no hope. But is there really such a thing as a desperate or impossible situation for the One who can do all things? | 11 Page Emanuel Information Service Times Saturday: 5:15 p.m. Sunday: 8:00 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. Monday: 6:30 p.m. The radio broadcast airs at 9:00 a.m. each Sunday morning on WJMQ, 92.3 FM Each Sunday from 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. Sunday School (school classrooms) Bible Studies and Fellowship (narthex & various Emanuel rooms) Office Hours & Contact Information 200 E.
