Dear Parents
A warm Applewood welcome to 2015! My family and I arrived in the Elgin
Valley last Wednesday and have been overwhelmed by the kindness, warmth
and generosity shown to us by so many members of the Applewood
community. Thank you!
It has been something of a whirlwind start to the year as I have begun to get to
know the teachers and routines of Applewood – and what a privilege it is. The
warmth, care, concern and professionalism of the staff is evident in all contact I
have had with them. I look forward to settling in and learning and growing with
them all.
The first day of school is always an exciting one as the school once again
“comes alive.” We welcomed 37 new children to Applewood yesterday. More
little ones will join us through the course of the first and second terms which
should see our numbers approach the 180 mark.
At our first assembly we spoke about the concept of 3G – and it is not a
communication standard. 3G is just a catchy initialism to help the children
remember their own personal disciplines. The three “G’s” are:



Grounds – a reminder of our environment and how we must look after it
especially the beautiful campus that is Applewood
Grooming – a reminder of the importance of looking our best and having pride
in our appearance especially when in our school uniform
Greeting – a reminder of good manners and respect for others in all that we
do
Looking ahead, the first important date in our calendar is 21 January – our
parent information evening. This is an opportunity for parents to meet their
children’s teachers and to become informed about routines and requirements
for the new class and grade. It will also offer me an opportunity to address
parents for the first time. I look forward to meeting more of you.

The format of the evening will be:



17:15 – Grades 000 to 3 parent information meetings
18:00 – parent meeting in the school hall with the headmaster
18:15 – Grade 4 to 7 parent information meetings
Regrettably we cannot offer babysitting services. The teachers and classroom helpers are all involved in the
classroom meetings. Please make every effort to attend the evening; it will be of benefit to you and your
children.
The sports timetable for the first term is attached – more information regarding fixtures will be circulated as soon
as this is available. Sport practices begin next week. Sports practice kit is sport shorts, house T-shirts, socks and
white takkies.
