January 2015 - Loudoun County Public Schools

January 2015
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Lunsford Families,
Happy New Year! Welcome back to an important time of
the school year. I know our students have resolved to work
hard and focus on their goals! Our staff is rejuvenated and
ready to help our students to continue to achieve at high
levels!
Regular updates have been provided to you in regarding
our application for the designation of a “National School to
Watch.” I am happy to announce that after a rigorous
application process and an extensive site visit, our school
has received this distinction! As a National School to
Watch we have provided evidence that we are a school
with organizational structures that ensures academic
excellence, responds to adolescents needs appropriately,
and ensures an equitable environment where individual
needs are met. This was a collective effort amongst our
staff, students, parents, and community partners. Our
school will be recognized at an upcoming school board
meeting and we will celebrate this designation school wide
in the Spring.
There are a number of important dates in January of which
you should be aware. A parent coffee is scheduled for 1/16
on the topic –“ 21st Century Student: Self Advocacy &
Controlling Your Own Destiny.” We will welcome Neil
McNerney for this second of four planned coffees on our
21st Century Student Initiative. Our monthly General PTA
meeting will be held January 20th at 7:00pm. Finally,
please note that High School exams will be scheduled
towards the end of the 1st semester. You may contact your
student’s teacher with specific questions. Our 2nd quarter
ends January 23rd with report cards distributed February
4th.
Our transition to next school year also will be gearing up
throughout January. Please check your email for updates
on opportunities to learn more about your student’s
experience in our school. As always, please contact me
with any questions or concerns. Stay warm!

IXL
The Math department will be
using a website called IXL in our classrooms this year. IXL is a
comprehensive math practice site with an unlimited number
of math practice questions covering
hundreds of skills — all of which are aligned to Virginia State
Standards. One of the best things about IXL is that your child
can access it from home, so you have a chance to see your
child's progress! Your child will also have opportunities to use
IXL during the school day as well as before and after school.
Please check your child’s math teacher’s website for assignment details. The IXL standards will be linked next to each unit
of study. The math teachers will be holding an open-lab every
Wednesday in case your child would like to practice after school .Thank you to the Lunsford PTA for supporting this
program.

JML
MOVIE
PROJECT
After this year’s bullying assemblies we started asking kids “what do you think would
be a really effective presentation for JML students?” All of the students we asked gave
feedback telling us that if real life JML students and staff could be a part of the
program, if they could share their actual stories of being bullied, or even of bullying
others, it would help them to ‘get it’. So the JML Movie Project was born! We are so
excited to announce that we have partnered with a local TV/Film studio, BlackLab Film
+TV, who happens to be owned by one of our JML parents. He has enthusiastically
agreed to help us create an amazing movie, starring JML students and staff, which will
be used in future bullying prevention curriculum at JML.
The purpose of this film will be to allow our students to show real-life at JML, to
express real feelings and to share real stories. The best part of this project is that it
will be student produced, student written, student acted and student directed.
Students will participate in creating the music for the movie, the set design, the
marketing/advertising materials; we will even have the students name the movie as
we get closer to the final product. By involving our students in every step of this
process, we hope they will feel invested in JML and working together to limit bullying
in our building. We have incredibly talented kids here,
and this is a fantastic way for any of them to showcase
their gifts!
