Based upon the poety of A.B. Spellman from his book Things I Must Have Known, Imani Winds composer Jeffrey Scott has created Passion for Bach and Coltrane, a work for wind quintet, string quartet, jazz trio and orator. The seven-movement work, anchored by reimaginations of Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, explores the influence of spirituality on the art of these two masters and asks the inevitable question — what if J.S. Bach and John Coltrane might chance to meet? Imani Winds is one of the most successful chamber music ensembles in the United States. This Grammy-nominated quintet has carved out a distinct presence in the classical music world with its dynamic playing, culturally poignant programming, adventurous collaborations and inspirational outreach programs. Harlem Quartet expresses boundless energy and contagious enthusiasm as it brings a fresh and upbeat attitude to classical music, whether it’s traditional, modern or influenced by jazz. Their most recent recording, Hot House, with jazz master Chick Corea and percussionist Gary Burton, was a 2013 multi-Grammy Award winner. Julian Sands, actor, (Q & A) | Dec. 5 Thank you for keeping the Arts in Education! “Thank you very much for the invitation to the Chant of Harlem performance. My students came away with a greater appreciation for the artists who thrived during that time period. Many were inspired to read more about the Harlem Renaissance as a result. After our visit, the students made journal entries that spoke of their experience. Many now have aspirations of being poets, dancers, musicians and writers. This truly was inspirational for them.” — 6th grade reading teacher, Northwest Middle School Thodos Dance Chicago (dance) | Nov. 8 Spirit of the Mask and Sounds of the Sub-Saharan | through January and February Voice (vocal workshop) | Feb. 12-14 Cherish the Ladies | March 21 For information on professional development for teachers, festivals and special programs, visit www.jccc.edu/pasartseducation or call Angel Mercier, program director, 913-469-8500, ext. 4221.
