The objective of manufacturing system is to produce high quality products which are useful for the society with some giving constraints and objectives. At factory or shop floor level, automation, control, material handling and quality control technologies are the basic building blocks of any manufacturing system. When clubbed with manufacturing support then this manufacturing system is often referred to as production system. Manufacturing systems have covered a wide journey of its transformation from Dedicated Manufacturing Line (DML) to Cellular Manufacturing and then to Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) and finally to Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS). This evolution of manufacturing systems with time is governed by market and customer requirements along with the survival instinct imposed by fierce competition among manufacturers. Designing a cost effective manufacturing system and operating it efficiently is a key competitive challenge in the present manufacturing arena. The current global manufacturing scenario is characterized by strong competition among businesses which includes implementation of state of art technologies in product design and processes, highly customized products, very strong supply-chain relationships, abrupt fluctuations in product design and demand, shorter lead times and rapid introduction of new products and that too at reduced costs. Also, some very frequent governmental regulations mostly based on environment and climate may also lead to alteration, redesign and reconfiguration of manufacturing systems. In order to survive within such dynamic, constrained and highly demanding global manufacturing environment, the manufacturing enterprises are forced to opt for such manufacturing systems which are responsive to changes. In order to translate the threats into prospects the manufacturers/researchers all over the world are inspired to explore and develop better techniques for manufacturing. In this backdrop of increasingly challenging manufacturing scenario, this workshop has been planned with the objective to provide a platform to professionals, academicians and research scholars to deliberate on all issues related to Manufacturing Systems with prime focus on modern manufacturing paradigms to cope with dynamic market scenario, application of computers and newer soft computing techniques for optimization of multiple performance parameters and other pertinent issues related to the design and operation of Manufacturing Systems. TOPICS TO BE COVERED • Modern Manufacturing Systems: scope and challenges • Most Popular and emerging manufacturing systems • Flexibilities in the manufacturing systems • System performance modeling and measurement • Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) - Introduction • Design and Operation of RMS • Designing single reconfigurable product flow line (SRPFL) • Designing reconfigurable assembly lines • Future trends ABOUT IIT ROORKEE st IIT Roorkee became the seventh IIT of the country when 21 September 2001 the prestigious University of Roorkee was converted into an IIT. Founded as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1847, this temple of learning, the oldest engineering institution in Asia and the first one in the then British Empire, is now 160 years old. The Institute offers 11 undergraduate courses in Engineering and Architecture and 51 postgraduate courses in different disciplines of Engineering, Architecture, Management and Sciences along with 5 Integrated Dual Degree, 3 Integrated M.Tech. and 3 Integrated M.Sc. programs. Ph.D. programs are conducted in all disciplines. ABOUT ROORKEE Roorkee is a part of the State of Uttarakhand and is located at the foothills of Himalayas. Roorkee Railway Station is on the main line of Northern Railways having direct links to Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Amritsar, Jodhpur and Shri Ganganagar. The place is also within easy reach by road from Delhi (200 km) and Chandigarh (180 km). It is located on Delhi – Haridwar and Delhi – Dehradun bus routes. Roorkee is ideally located near several tourist places, like Dehradun (70 km), Mussoorie (100 km), Haridwar (32 km) and Rishikesh (50 km). Roorkee is very pleasant in the first half of November and, therefore, the participants are requested to come with light woolen clothes.
