HERALD photo/TONY A. ARCHULETA CLASS Continued from Page 1 notification,” Standefer jokingly said of Tooley, a proud fire chief indeed who showed up at the Commission Chambers with his fellow firefighters, a fire truck and a PowerPoint presentation featuring one computational wonder after another. Standefer said he first became acquainted with Truth or Consequences firefighters, including thenfire chief D.L. Scott, in 1971. I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of excellent people from this community, including chiefs (Scott), Leon Johnson, Tim Wellborn, Carl Teston, Mike Tooley and, of course, CHAIR Continued from Page 1 Mrs. Luna, that you nominated me,” said Lyon. “I know you have been the vice chair, you were the current commissioner – I do think you have done an excellent job, and I would have supported you.” Lyon, who served on the county commission from 1990 to 1996, agreed that he’s able and willing to put in the hours required to actively serve as commission chairman on a day-to-day basis. “And certainly there are some committees that I would like to serve on that I think will bring recognition not only to our county, but maybe economically it can be a big bonus,” he said. Lyon, while acknowledging the legally risky business of mixing politics with religion, issued a call for blessings from on high. “We know there have been some hurt feelings in this county, and I think we need available in the Administration Office at Sierra Vista Hospital 72 hours before the meeting. Standefer said Truth or Consequences’ achievement “put a star in our column also.” Several years ago, Standefer said, the Fire Marshal’s Office successfully lobbied the State Legislature to direct all of the state’s Fire Protection Fund monies to local fire departments instead of letting half of it revert to the General Fund. The additional revenue, in part, allowed the Fire Marshal’s Office to create the Fire Services Support Bureau, which is tasked with improving ISO ratings for the 360-plus fire departments throughout the state. Standefer said the initiative not only lowered fire insurance premiums, but a healing in the county, so I would take a moment of silence to ask for divine intervention in this county,” Lyon said, adding, “that certainly the county move forward – that if there’s been hard feelings in the past, with the hospital, with the flood commission, we can go on and on and name what they are, then we’ll just move forward and those things will be put behind us, and we can be positive.” Addressing any potential agnostics in the audience, Lyon said, “If you don’t believe in divine intervention, I would ask that maybe you meditate on how you can become involved with the county and make this a better place to live, and a better place for our children.” also helped communities with their economic development efforts. Only two fire departments in the state are currently rated at the ISO entry level rating of 10, and they will soon be improving to 9, Standefer said. “And then when we can come here and look at an allvolunteer department and a community the size of TorC and say this is a Class 2, they make me look awful good,” Standefer said. “They make me able to go back to the Legislature and tell them, ‘You know what, we did what we said we’d do, and it took a lot of hard work,’ but when we have people like the firefighters here in TorC that are working so hard on the other end, it made it easy for us. “These are more than just firefighters,” he continued. “Every one of these folks I consider a personal friend. Thank you for having us here tonight, please keep up the good work.” City officials also complimented the firefighters. “Well, Madam Mayor, for the first time in seven years I’m almost speechless,” Mayor Pro-tem Steve Green said. “I would just say, ‘Class 2 –hyphen– Class Act.” Said City Manager Juan Fuentes, “Thank you all for the hard work and the dedication to the City of TorC and the Village of Williamsburg.” “And we’re very proud of you,” Mayor Sandy Whitehead said. *** Hot Springs Trading Post 103 E. 1st St., TorC GOINGOUTOFBUSINESSSALE! 25% to 50% OFF Everything in the Store Open at 11:00 a.m. Household Items, Jewelry, art and much more!
