Swansea Employability Academy and Careers & Employability Service are hosting and delivering a series of workshops and events for all students. They are
designed to improve your knowledge and skills in the job application and interview process and to help you prepare for the employment sector.
These workshops and events are in addition to the activities organised by your own College as part of Employability Week – further details of these are
available in College, but if you have any questions, please e-mail employability@swansea.ac.uk

graduated from Swansea University in 2012 with a Geography degree, will share her journey to her current post in

Tom Barker, Global Digital Director at MediaCom (http://www.mediacom.com/en/home.aspx) will give his
perspective on his journey as a manager and recruiter of staff. He has more than 13 years’ experience managing
the advertising for clients like Ford, Land Rover, Mazda, Vauxhall, VW and Audi. Both he and Katie will also talk
about their experience in media/ international companies.

Bloomberg Assessment Test (BAT)
The BAT is a multiple choice test that evaluates your abilities as relative to a career in finance and then helps you
to anonymously market yourself to over 20,000 employers via the Bloomberg Talent Search. All questions on the
BAT evaluate aptitude rather than knowledge so you do not need to have a background in Finance in order to do
well on the test.
The BAT is offered FREE of charge on campus and you can also retake the test for FREE and only your best score
will be visible to employers. Students of all degrees and all levels of study are invited to take the BAT as we offer a
variety of internship and full time job opportunities.

The International Students Advisory Service will give a presentation as part of the session to international non-EU
students on the different UK visas which might allow Swansea graduates to take a job or gain work experience in the
UK after completing their degrees.

The HEAR, Gradintel & Employability Awards
1 hour
Keep a track of all your achievements whilst at university and after you graduate. Most UK universities are introducing
the Higher Education Achievement Report, HEAR. This is an electronic document that includes both your academic and
non-academic achievements improving your employability. You can send a link to your HEAR to an employer when
applying for work. Employers can also search all HEARs (anonymously) and may contact you if they like the look of
your HEAR. Find out more about the HEAR and how it works as well as some of the awards that if you complete will
be recorded on your personal HEAR.
Getting Started
Unsure of the career you are aiming for? Not sure what steps you could or should be taking during this academic
year? This session will give you some useful advice and tips to help you start planning your future and will help you
manage you career in the longer term.

Developing an employability mindset
1 hour
In an increasingly competitive global labour market securing a good job in your chosen job sector is a challenge. To
maximise their chances of success in the process the graduates who are successful are those that have developed a
strong mindset, an excellent attitude/approach towards this challenge. This session will support you in being able to
develop this mindset, so that you can maximise your chances of success in your chosen field.
What do you have to offer? – Personal Branding
1 hour
This session will look at aspects of your own personal brand, what makes you tick and how you can define who you
are. Find out how you can showcase your personal brand using social media. Find out your unique selling points and
what you could offer an employer.
Career Decision Making
Deciding what to do after your degree can be an overwhelming experience. Many students feel that they do not know
where to start. A key part of your career management is the ability to make effective decisions, and this session will
support you in being able to achieve this.

get a clearer picture of timescales, where to look for vacancies and develop a plan.
Writing an effective CV and covering letter
1 hour
A practical workshop covering the key points on how to write CVs and covering letters and adapt them to meet the
needs of potential employers and Industry Sectors.
This workshop will be useful if you have not yet written your CV or if you need further help and advice on
communicating your educational talents and previous work experience to employers. If you have a current CV you are
welcome to bring it to this session, though there may not be time for individual feedback.

Work Placement Opportunities - The Benefits of Participating and How to Apply

Feeling daunted by applications forms? This workshop will look at different types of application forms, focussing on
the “additional information” and competency sections , (e.g. “please provide an example of an activity demonstrating

Kyle Burrows from Propeller Training will deliver the session and will discuss how to apply sports psychology to the
world of work, adapting working styles to suit different situations and how to build your confidence. He has worked
with e.g. IPC Media, Time Warner and the Discovery Channel over the last 13 years so understands what employers
expect from graduate employees.
Teach First, the biggest graduate recruiter for 2014, have partnered with us on this initiative and will be part of the
session answering questions from an employer's perspective.

PwC Presentation Competition
PwC is running a competition open to all students. Students are invited to make a 10 minute pitch to PwC on 29th or
30th January 2015 .
The presentation should focus on 'The changing world of business'.
Each pitch will be assessed based on the following criteria; presentation, style, content and structure. The top 3
students will then be invited to pitch to a director at PwC with the winning student receiving £200 all three students
will have the opportunity to network over lunch with staff at the PwC Swansea office.

click on 12/1/15. Registration opens 12/1/15 and closes 20/1/15.
PwC will then contact you with a time and date for your pitch which will be on 29th or 30th January 2015

Bydd Kyle Burrows o Propeller Training yn cyflwyno’r sesiwn, a bydd yn trafod sut i ddefnyddio seicoleg chwaraeon yn y
byd gwaith, addasu arddulliau gweithio i weddu sefyllfaoedd gwahanol a sut i godi eich hyder.
