job description - Oxford Computer Consultants

Technical Project Manager, Consultancy Team
Company:
Status:
Salary range:
Oxford Computer Consultants Ltd
Permanent, full-time position
£35,000-£45,000 per annum (depending on experience)
We build a highly successful range of custom software solutions which we deliver to both the
private and public sectors. Our Consultancy projects are varied and challenging and involve a
broad range of software and web application technologies – no two projects are the same.
The team is active in the engineering, energy and health sectors. For example, in the energy
sector we have been supplying numerical applications to National Grid since 1997 and have
since undertaken a myriad of projects for them in a relationship that is ongoing. A small
proportion of our work is also EU co-funded research and development.
The Consultancy Team is one part of OCC and the wider company builds and supports products
for the management of social care, dealing mostly with local authorities. There will be
opportunities for the right candidate to move into this area if they wish.
We are looking for a technical project manager with a background in software engineering and
who has a minimum 2:1 degree in a relevant subject.
The role involves the following:

Project Management - each project has different requirements and is built with different
technologies. You would be expected to handle complex projects which require the ability
to learn quickly. You need to be organised, confident with technology and focused on the
customer’s needs.

Customer Relationship Management – we work very closely with our clients and build
long term relationships. You need to be able to communicate clearly, listen well, translate
technical issues for non-technical audiences and understand the customer’s viewpoint.

Team facilitation – within OCC you will frequently be managing very able technical staff.
You should have the ability to bring people together to solve technical problems and
ensure all team members are heard, motivated and focused.

Software development – we believe that if you are to manage complex software projects,
you need to do some software development. You don’t need to be cutting edge but you
do need familiarity with the tools and techniques your team are using.
You should be experienced in managing the whole life cycle of technical software from
requirements gathering, liaising with the client, running a development team, commission a
system and organising support.
You must have experience of software project management and the ability to write good code.
The following would be advantageous: Agile methodologies, PRINCE2 qualifications, MSP, risk
management, software commissioning, a science or engineering background.
The role is permanent and full-time and will involve travel to client sites about 1 day per week.

Summary of benefits at OCC:
 A generous training budget
 Bicycle scheme
 Free fruit, tea, coffee & milk
 Income protection and life assurance
 Pool table and tournament
 Fantastic central Oxford location
A flavour of life at OCC:
 Webinars on various topics – open to all at OCC. Recently, there was one on Building
Real-time Web Apps with ASP.NET SignalR.
 We have a Show & Tell presentation every month or so to share best practice gleaned
from a project followed by Q&A and discussion with cakes.
 We have an internal newsletter with company news, eg sales and staff news.
 We have over 50 people working in our Oxford Office, 21 of whom are software
consultants, a further 8 implementation consultants and a support team of 8 (for local
government products including ContrOCC and some projects). This means that there’s
always someone to ask for help whether it’s a technical question or a general one.
 We like to think we are a friendly and hospitable bunch – many people stay (we have a
good retention rate) and we are known for looking after our visitors well.
 We have an annual outing to a Shakespeare play; last year we had our Christmas dinner
at Blenheim Palace, which we all loved. Alternate years, we may go to see a show, such
as Cirque du Soleil in London (we’ve done this 2 or 3 times).
 We also have an annual punting expedition straight from work on a nice warm day
sometimes on the spur of the moment (summertime only!). This is always great fun and
we have a good laugh, plus some nice food and a drink.
 We have welcome lunches for new staff to meet people more informally, and teams often
celebrate the launch of a product upgrade or the completion of a project!
 OCC sponsors the Oxford Bach Choir and we donate to charity (with local connections)
every Christmas instead of sending company cards.
 Oxford is beautiful in the centre of the city with the Thames; the stretch of it here is
known as the Isis.
We also work hard, and unusually, for an open plan office, it‘s pretty quiet, which is very
conducive to concentration.
OCC is an equal opportunities employer and
welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
