LONNIE MIMS, A FORMER MCH RESIDENT,
SPOKE AT A HELPING AMERICA’S YOUTH
CONFERENCE HOSTED BY MRS. LAURA BUSH
PRESIDENTIAL PERSPECTIVE
MCH achieves goal to serve 1,000 children
“Finding at-risk children
and youth who need to
discover the hope that is
offered through this ministry
has never been, nor will
it be, difficult to do.”
As a friend of Methodist Children’s Home, I am sure you heard in recent years about
this ministry’s goal to serve 1,000 at-risk children and youth each day. I am excited to
tell you that we achieved this goal in April.
Finding at-risk children and youth who need to discover the hope that is offered
through this ministry has never been, nor will it be, difficult to do. As I told our staff,
we can pick any spot on a Texas or New Mexico map and identify communities where atrisk children need our services. Unfortunately, in those same locations, we can identify
government and faith-based agencies that are closing their doors or cutting services due
to a lack of funding.
As we consider opportunities to expand the scope of this ministry, we are diligent in
our research to identify locations where our program can flourish and impact the largest
number of children in the most cost effective way. We are blessed to have faithful
benefactors whose support enables our expansion plans to become a reality. This issue of
Sunshine features our annual Circle of Friends recognition. This list identifies individuals,
churches and foundations who helped the Home increase funding again this year. Methodist
Children’s Home would not be able to offer hope to at-risk children without this support,
along with the contributions of past supporters who designated gifts from their estate to
strengthen our permanent endowment.
The Home’s financial and physical resources enabled us to answer the call in April
when the state sought support for children from the YFZ Ranch in Eldorado. We were able
to immediately hire additional staff to serve more than 40 of these children, purchase new
beds and mattresses, renovate a building to house the children, plan daily meals and
organize activities. While the situation at the YFZ Ranch has captured the nation’s attention,
caring for children in need is nothing new for this ministry. We serve children every day
who have experienced abuse, neglect, violence, the result of poor choices and hopelessness
prior to coming to Methodist Children’s Home.
Thank you for supporting this ministry. In busy times like these, when we are
accomplishing so much for children, I am reminded of how special the Home is and how
it truly offers hope through a nurturing, Christian community. I promise you that MCH
will continue to work tirelessly to fulfill its mission to children, regardless of the
circumstances that bring them to us. Thank you for empowering me to fulfill this promise.
For His Children,
Bobby Gilliam
AN OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE
Methodist Children’s Home served more than 40 children from the YFZ Ranch in Eldorado from April 25 through June 3. The Home is grateful

White House Photo by Shealah Craighead
Sitting in the same room as the President of the United States,
Lonnie Mims reflected on his journey in life that led him to The
White House.
A former resident of Methodist Children’s Home, Mims and
other young adults from across the country were attending a special
event recognizing the Helping America’s Youth initiative Feb. 7 in
Washington, D.C. As he looked across the room, Mims was struck
by the reality of being at The White House.
“I thought, ‘I can’t believe I’m actually in the same room as
President Bush,’” Mims recalled. “I never would have guessed this
would happen to me.”
The Helping America’s Youth initiative is a national effort
established by President Bush in 2005 to raise awareness about the
challenges at-risk youth face. Mims and other young people in
attendance at The White House event had participated in Helping
America’s Youth regional conferences earlier in the year.
Mims, who was placed into state custody as a young child,
lived for several years in foster care before moving to MCH in
2000. In recent years, he has received support through the Transition
Resource Action Center (TRAC) in Dallas, which provides
educational and career guidance for young men and women who
have been in custody of the state. His involvement with TRAC led
to an invitation to speak at a regional Helping America’s Youth
conference in Dallas last November.
Mims feels blessed to have had the opportunity to see President
Bush. He received a phone call from The White House just days
before the event. Although he was thrilled at the invitation, Mims

learned that he had to pay his own travel expenses, an obstacle that
seemed too large to overcome. However, when MCH president Bobby
Gilliam heard about this opportunity, he called Mims and told him
that the Home would pay for his expenses. Evy Kay Ritzen, program
director at TRAC, then used her connections to handle his travel
arrangements.
“I am very grateful for Mr. Gilliam and Methodist Children’s
Home,” Mims said. “Without their support, I would not have been
able to go on that trip.”
The Helping America’s Youth initiative is under the direction
of Mrs. Laura Bush. During the event at The White House, she
expressed her appreciation for the volunteers and mentors who
work with at-risk youth, and she addressed many of the challenges
they face each day.
Mims has certainly experienced his share of challenges. When
he was a young child, his mother worked long hours as a nurse to try
to provide for her children. Without a father at home, the older children
were forced to help care for the daily needs of their younger siblings.
Eventually, his family had to leave their apartment due to financial
problems and they moved in with Mims’ grandmother. When she
could no longer provide care, the children were placed in the custody
of the state, which began a series of placements for Mims.
“I lived in so many foster care homes and children’s homes, I
can’t even remember them all,” Mims said. “Even though I was
young, I knew something wasn’t right.”
Mims’ older brother and sister ended up at Methodist Children’s
Home, and he and his younger sister were placed there later.

COVER STORY
Mims had a difficult transition to the Home, primarily because
of the numerous moves he had previously made to different foster
homes or agencies. During his first days at MCH, he made no effort
to build relationships with staff or peers.
“I had moved around so much I was never at a place long enough
to build relationships,” he said. “I thought I would be moving again,
so I didn’t see a need to get to know anyone. I just stayed in my room
and cried.”
Mims often questioned why his life was turning out like it did.
He desperately wanted to return to Dallas to live with his mother,
although she couldn’t care for her children due to personal issues.
Mims became increasingly frustrated as staff members tried to help
him feel a sense of belonging at the Home.
“I didn’t understand what they were trying to do for me,” he
said. “I didn’t want adults telling me what to do. I was homesick and
I was hurt.”
Although his actions didn’t show it, Mims admits he longed for
meaningful relationships. He said it took him awhile to learn to trust
adults at MCH. He is thankful that they continued to reach out to
him despite his resistance.
Initially, two staff members, Candice Darwin and Betty Black,
began to connect with Mims. Darwin served as his social worker and
Black was one of his homeparents. They knew how much Mims
worried about his mother’s well being, and they helped him maintain
communication with her during his stay at the Home.
“They did a lot of things for me outside the normal part of their
jobs,” he said. “Ms. Betty and Ms. Candice showed me that people
really do care about me.”
During his five years at the Home, Mims and Black developed a
close relationship. Her concern for Mims’ family and for his personal
growth and success enabled Black to earn his trust.
“Ms. Betty is open-minded with kids; she doesn’t care about their
race or backgrounds,” Mims said. “She speaks her mind but respects
them as people. She just loves kids and that’s what they need.”
Through the self-confidence he gained from Black, Darwin and
other staff members and teachers at the MCH charter school, Mims
began to build relationships with his peers and participate in campus
activities. He especially enjoyed his involvement in a student-led
organization that educated residents about the dangers of drugs,
alcohol and violence. Mims also served on the yearbook staff and
played basketball, and he participated in a study program sponsored
by SMU’s Perkins Youth School of Theology in New Mexico.
As his life began to change, Mims wanted to tell others about his
success. He often shared his testimony at churches around the state
as a member of Ambassadors. He received numerous awards
throughout his stay at the Home, including the LaTonya Bassey Circle
of Courage Award, presented to a resident who demonstrates resiliency
and courage despite having faced adversity.
As one of the staff members who knew him best, Black
admired Mims for the efforts he made to improve his life.
“I loved all the boys in that home, but I believe I was harder
on Lonnie,” Black said. “I expected more out of him because I
could see his potential. I wanted him to become a leader in our
home, and he did.”
Mims admits he was motivated to succeed in part because of
stereotypes he faced before coming to the Home. Growing up in
adverse conditions, his future looked bleak. However, he refused
to give in to the perceptions and expectations of others.
“I’m big on proving people wrong,” he said. “I know people
stereotype me, but I’ll tell you today, I have never used drugs or
alcohol and I try to make good choices. I work hard because I
know my actions speak louder than my words.”
Mims believes he sent a strong message to those in his past
when he graduated from high school in 2005. After he left the
Home, he joined the Job Corps and later moved back to Dallas so
he could help support his family. Today, Mims is attending Eastfield
College where he is pursuing a degree in automotive design, and
he is working part-time in the banking industry through support
provided by TRAC. His interest in cars was identified during his
early days at MCH.

Mims, continued from page 5
remembers watching Mims draw pictures of cars while he waited
for the school bus.
“I enjoyed visiting with Lonnie at the campus bus stop in the
mornings,” he said. “He always showed me his latest sketch of a
car. His favorite car was a Mustang convertible. It doesn’t surprise
me that he wants to pursue a career in automotive design.”
Last spring, Mims was invited to speak to students at the MCH
charter school. Jackson knew that many of the youth could identify
with Mims’ struggles and that they would be encouraged and
motivated by his success.
“Lonnie has empathy for these young people because he has
walked down the road they’re walking,” Jackson said. “He
understands their trials and tribulations.”
During his address to students, Mims challenged them to take
their education seriously. He still remembers the encouragement
he received from his mother when he was a child.
“She always told me that I needed to do my best in school,” he
said. “She said that she knew I was going to grow up to be somebody
important but that I had to have an education to fulfill my dreams.
When I go to my college classes, I still remember those words.”
Mims told the students that he is also motivated by a desire to
provide a good life for his family.
“When I have kids, I don’t want them to have to go through
what I went through,” he said. “And the best way for me to provide
for my family is to complete my education and get a good job. I
don’t want to live average.”
Mims said he realizes that many MCH youth face the same
stereotypes he faced as a child. He told the students that they have
a choice to make, just as he did.
“If you want to prove people wrong, to let them know that you
are somebody special, then you need to take advantage of what
you’ve been given at Methodist Children’s Home and work hard,”
he said. “The Home taught me that God created me and that there’s
a purpose for my life. I thank God every day for providing these
wonderful opportunities for me.”
During Mims’ visit at the school, several of his former staff
members, including Black, attended the sessions when he spoke to
students. As he concluded his last presentation, he asked Black to
come to the front of the room so he could recognize her for the
contributions she has made to his life.
“Ms. Betty opened my eyes to see what I had in life,” he said.
“She wants to help every person, no matter what they face. That’s
respect right there. Look at what she has done for me.”
Mims knows that there are many staff members, teachers and
administrators who influenced his life, and he talks about the Home
every chance he gets.
“I consider this place my home away from home,” he said.
“Not long after I graduated, I wanted to come back. I had some
really good times here. However, it wasn’t the program or activities
that helped me. The people here made the difference in my life.”

HELPING AMERICA’S YOUTH REGIONAL CONFERENCE
Striving for the best
Lonnie Mims, a 2005 graduate of Methodist Children’s Home,
spoke at the Helping America’s Youth regional conference on
Nov. 8, 2007, in Dallas. Mims talked about the Home’s
influence on his life. Following are excerpts from his address
at the conference:
First off, I want to say thank you to
God and to my mother. Without her,
I wouldn’t be here today. And I want
to express how my life has been,
how hard it has been and how I
changed all those bad things into
good things.
Lonnie Mims was reunited
Most of my life, I was separated with Betty Black, his former
homeparent, during a visit
from my family, in and out of to the Home last spring.
children’s homes, in and out of the
care of the state. As a young child, I found out that my father was
denying that I was his son. For a young child to go through
something like that is very painful. I have a reason to be mad, I
have a reason to go out and do bad things, but my life has been
so hard I chose not to turn that way. I said, “I’ve been living too
hard, I don’t want to live average, so I’m going to do what I need
to do to get the best for me and my family.”
My mother tried to be there as much as she could. I want to say
that I love her still to this day. She’s the number one queen in
my life. The way I strive for the best is because I see my family
going through hard things. There were weeks when I went
without eating and days when I went without a change of clothes
or a good education.
“It wasn’t the
program that
helped me out
the most, it
was the people
in the program. ”
When I went into the care of the
state for the last time, I moved
into the Methodist Children’s
Home in Waco. It wasn’t the
program that helped me out the
most, it was the people in the
program. So I want to say to all of
the mentors out there now, please keep doing what you’re
doing. You don’t know how much you change our lives.
There is this one lady at Methodist Children’s Home, her name
is Ms. Betty. She had to look up to me, but I still look up to her
because she’s the second woman in my life. I would be happy
to help her anytime she needs me.
Ms. Betty was like a substitute mother to me. She took care of
my prom. That is one of the most important things of a teenager’s
life. She took care of that with money out of her own pocket to
make sure I had the best. Today, I proudly say that I love Ms.
Betty, and if she can hear this today, I want to say, “Ms. Betty,
you have made an impact on my life. I want to thank you for it.”
Now, I am going to college to study to be an engineer and
automotive designer, and I’m going to be the best.

AROUND CAMPUS
Kristina earns Central Texas “incredible kid” award
Kristina, a May graduate at Methodist Children’s Home, was
recognized by the Camp Fire USA Tejas Council for her personal
growth during its Second Annual Absolutely Incredible Kids
Celebration May 8 in Waco. Kristina was one of 10 Central Texas
youth who were recognized during the luncheon.
Kristina was nominated for the award by Sarah Heger, her
high school English teacher at the Home’s University of Texas
Charter School. She wrote the following information about Kristina
as part of her nomination:
Courage – Kristina shows leadership in many areas at the
Methodist Children’s Home. She came to Waco about three years
ago from New Mexico, which was quite a change of scenery. She
was placed here for the usual reasons, personal or family
circumstances that require a helping hand. Kristina was a shy,
quiet, withdrawn freshman. After working with counselors and
staff, Kristina began to come out of her proverbial shell. She
began to make friends and began to trust again. Kristina could
have remained the loner that she once was, but with courage, she
took the steps to get to know the people that love her.
Now, Kristina is a courageous senior about to graduate. She
is president of the first nationally recognized student council at
the Methodist Children’s Home school. She is on the tri-council,
an in-depth campus/student run government for the Methodist
Children’s Home, and she participated in UIL ready writing. It’s
hard to believe that Kristina was ever afraid to get up in front of
a crowd. Now, she gives speeches and presentations on behalf of
her various committees on campus.
Heroism – Kristina may not be “Super Girl,” but she is a
hero to those in her life. She is a hero to her sister, Tylan. Kristina
has a bond with her sister like few siblings have. They look out
for each other even though they are many miles apart. Kristina,
Kristina, center, was named one of 10 “Absolutely Incredible Kids” by the
Camp Fire USA Tejas Council in May. Staff members who showed their
support for Kristina at the awards luncheon are, from left, Debbie and
Steve Callison, homeparents; Laura Bonner, caseworker; Leisa Patterson,
facilitator, MCH charter school; Sarah Heger, English teacher, charter
school; and Dr. Dan Jackson, MCH educational administrator.
being the older of the two, is a shining example of sisterly love
and loyalty.
Generosity – There are countless examples of Kristina showing
her generous and loving spirit. Kristina may still be somewhat
reserved, but just ask her for help and she is on the job with a
great attitude of service. Kristina serves her peers by being a
mentor, peer mediator, and, at times, a tutor. Kristina lends her
helping hands as well as ears and a shoulder for support. She is
generous through her willingness to “be there” for anyone who
might need her.
As you can see, Kristina is not your typical girl. She is not
constantly on a cell-phone or computer. She looks for the novelties
in life. She is more interested in reading a good book or writing
an uplifting letter to a family member than being the most popular
girl in school. What’s ironic is that Kristina is popular. She is
popular because she is trusted, highly esteemed, and dependable.
Brittanee’s dance skills earn her a trip to Paris
When Brittanee, an MCH resident, tried out for
the Waco High School drill team as a freshman
three years ago, she admits her goal was to “just
have fun.” She had no idea that her talents would
eventually take her around the world.
In March, Brittanee and other Texas high
school drill team members enjoyed the sights and
sounds of Paris, France, as a reward for their Brittanee
individual performances at the HTE Dance Training Camp last summer.
Brittanee was the only member of the Waco High squad who earned the
opportunity to participate on the trip. Participants had to pay their travel
expenses, and Brittanee received help from the Home.
“It was a fun trip, and I enjoyed comparing the way they live with
the way we live in the United States,” she said. “It was fun learning
8
about a different culture. I am thankful for the opportunity to go on a
trip like that.”
Brittanee, who will be a senior this fall, was voted by her team
members to serve as captain of the 41-member squad for the second
consecutive year.
“It’s a big responsibility and there’s a lot of pressure because I
have to make sure everyone learns the routines,” she said. “I enjoy
teaching them and seeing the benefits of our hard work.”
Brittanee is participating in the drill team camp again this
summer, and she looks forward to her final year with her Waco High
squad.

she said. “But I’ve gotten used to it. People tell me that they like to

God’s girls
Lori Battles draws strength
from the Lord and Methodist Children’s Home
as she raises her grandchildren.
Each morning when Lori Battles prepares to take her grandchildren
to day care, they stack their hands on top of each other and shout
“1-2-3 God’s girls!” and then pray for their day. These moments
together help Battles and the girls – Sierra, 5, and Mya, 3 – prepare
for a new day and remind them of the importance of keeping God
as the top priority in their lives.
Battles knows that it takes God’s strength in her life to help
meet the daily needs of her grandchildren, who were placed into
her custody last December.
“I want to make sure we keep God in our daily lives,” said
Battles, who enjoys singing at churches, revivals and special events.
“The most important thing I can do as a grandparent is to help
them know the Lord.”
When Battles accepted custody of the girls, she understood the
challenging circumstances she would face. She must now get up
early enough to help the girls get dressed before driving them to
day care. She then works until 6 p.m., when she picks up the girls
from their other grandparents’ home and starts their evening routine,
which often includes a trip to a local park or other activity before
going home.
“It has definitely changed my lifestyle,” Battles said. “They
depend on me for their basic needs, guidance and support. I’m
doing everything I can to provide for them.”
Battles admits that she would not be able to care for her
grandchildren without the assistance of the girls’ other grandparents,
James Dolan Williams Jr. and his wife, Denise, who spend time
with the girls daily. Mrs. Williams took care of the girls for five
months before they started day care so Battles could maintain
full-time employment, and Mr. Williams changed jobs so he could
spend more time at home.
“They are truly a blessing and the girls just love them,” Battles
said. “This situation has created a special lifetime friendship.”
Battles also values the support and resources provided by
Methodist Children’s Home through its Grandparents As Parents
Program (GAPP), which is under the direction of Rehan McNeil.
Through this program, MCH supports grandparents who serve as
the primary caregivers for their grandchildren. The Home provides
support groups and workshops, assistance with legal issues and
governmental agencies, case management, limited financial
assistance and referrals to community-based services.
MCH provided financial support to help Battles place her
grandchildren in a quality day care program and assisted with a
few electrical bills during emergency situations, and the Home
helped Battles find legal assistance during the custody process.
10
Lori Battles and her granddaughters, Sierra, left, and Mya, enjoy spending
time together at a Waco park. Battles is one of more than 1,500
grandparents in Waco who serve as the primary caregivers for their
grandchildren. Battles values the support she receives through the
Grandparents As Parents Program at Methodist Children’s Home.
“Rehan and Methodist
Children’s Home have been
wonderful,” Battles said. “This is
a great program for grandparents.
If I need help with something,
Rehan will either provide it or
find someone who can. She has
been a special blessing to me.”
McNeil has been impressed
Lori Battles is grateful for the
with Battles’ commitment to her support of James Dolan Williams
Jr. and his wife, Denise, grandgrandchildren.
parents of Sierra and Mya.
“When I see Lori, I think of
one of my favorite scriptures, ‘I can do all things through Christ
who strengthens me,’” McNeil said. “Her life is a testimony of all
the grandparents who are making it work, regardless of the odds.”
Battles believes more grandparents need to learn about the
services and support provided through GAPP. According to the
latest census figures, 6.7 million children in the United States are
being raised by grandparents and other relatives. In Texas, more
than 257,000 grandparents are raising their grandchildren in their
homes, and this total includes more than 1,500 in Waco.
“Without the Home providing services through GAPP, many
grandparents would not be able to provide the basic necessities for
their families,” McNeil said. “It is our charge to equip grandparents
and families with tools and resources that will strengthen the familial
ties, increase feelings of self-worth, foster self-preservation and
encourage self-sufficiency.”
While MCH can help meet a variety of needs, Battles believes
one of the greatest benefits for grandparents is having a person like
McNeil working alongside them.
“Rehan is a sweet and wonderful person and I know she truly
cares about our family,” Battles said. “Methodist Children’s Home
is always right there for me. They look out for grandparents and
their grandchildren.”

Thank you!
In April, Methodist Children’s Home reached
a special milestone of 1,000 children and youth
in daily care. Our ministry is grateful to the individuals,
families, churches and groups that chose to provide
charitable donations to help the Home expand its services.
By reaching this goal, MCH has doubled the
number of children and youth served by the Home just
four years ago. This achievement is the culmination of
years of planning and hard work.
While we celebrate this goal, Methodist Children’s Home
is not finished growing. Today, the needs of at-risk
children and youth in our communities are more complex
and numerous than ever before. Join with this ministry as
we seek ways to serve more children from
Texas and New Mexico who are in need of the hope found
through our nurturing, Christian community.

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS
Sharing a Second Century of Love
Recognizing the friends of Methodist Children’s Home for outstanding contributions
in the support of children throughout Texas and New Mexico
What is the Circle Of Friends?
The Circle of Friends was created by the Board of Directors
at the end of 1990 during the celebration of the beginning
of our second century of ministry to children. It is designed
to give appropriate recognition and expressions of appreciation to those who generously support Methodist Children’s
Home boys and girls.
Who can join the Circle of Friends?
Individuals, businesses, United Methodist Women and Men’s
groups, Sunday School classes and civic organizations may
be members of the Circle of Friends.
What if I do not want my name publicly announced?
In January, we mail a card to each donor asking for
permission to list his or her name in our Circle of Friends.
We only print the names of those who have returned the card,
granting permission to print. We respect your privacy and the
confidentiality of your gifts. At any time, you may indicate
that you wish all gifts to remain unrecognized and we will
mark your record accordingly.
Will my church receive credit if I send my gift directly to the Home?
Yes, when you request church credit. We routinely send all
gifts back through the annual conference treasurer for church
credit, just as your church treasurer does when a Methodist
Children’s Home gift is given through the church. Please let
us know the name of your church when you make your gift.
Methodist Children’s Home does not receive any funds
through apportionments. All giving to the Home is through
the free will of those who love Methodist Children’s Home
boys and girls and who give generously, above and beyond
gifts to the local church.
Circle of Friends Giving Levels

STAFF RECOGNITION
Methodist Children’s Home recognized the dedication and commitment of Don Scott to youth at the Boys Ranch during its annual FFA
banquet May 2. Scott is pictured here with, from left, Javier, Michael and Jared, three of this year’s officers for FFA. Scott served as Boys
Ranch administrator from 1992-2008. He was recently named Administrator of Prevention and Transition Services for the Home. Dottie
Briggs, campus life director at the Boys Ranch and a former member of the child care staff on the Waco campus, was named administrator
at the Ranch.
