In their efforts to document the on-going history of Bridgeville they need current photographs to help record our town. All you need is a camera, some time, and be talented enough to take photos around town. They are seeking pictures of every current building on Washington Avenue from the intersection of Washington Avenue and Chartiers Street to the intersection of Washington Avenue and Station Street. They are also looking for photos of every current building on Station Street, Railroad Street and Baldwin Street (one of the original commercial ways through Bridgeville.) The photographs, either paper or digital, can be dropped off at the History Center or sent via e-mail to: mail@bridgevillehistory.org. But wait! That’s only half of the project — they are looking for volunteers to match up the buildings — old photos to new photos! In addition to taking new photos they are also seeking old photos of Bridgeville. To get involved call 412-221-4052, or better yet — stop in! The hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 am to 2 pm. The BAHS welcomes any ideas or constructive suggestions to help keep history alive in the Bridgeville Area! 3 Chartiers Valley School District Events February 4 Coffee and Conversation High School Digital Media Center | 7:30 am March 4 Coffee & Conversation High School Digital Media Center | 7:30 am February 4 High School Parent Scheduling Meeting (for parents of current 8th grade students) Middle School cafeteria | 6 pm March 4-7 High School Musical High School Auditorium | 7:30 pm February 5 High School Parent Scheduling Breakfast (for parents of current 9th-11th grade students) High School cafeteria | 7:15 am February 6 Thespian Society Cabaret High School Auditorium | 7 pm February 12 Middle School 5th Grade Parent Orientation High School Auditorium | 6 pm February 20 Community and Counselor Connection High School Digital Media Center | 8 am February 26 Financial Aid Completion Night Middle School Computer Lab | 7 pm March 14 High School Chorus Bunny Breakfast High School cafeteria 9 am – 1pm March 26 High School Chorus Concert High School Auditorium | 7 pm April 2-6 Spring Recess – No School April 8 Coffee & Conversation High School Digital Media Center | 7:30 am April 16 & April 17 Kindergarten Concerts Primary School | 2 pm April 16-18 Middle School Musical High School Auditorium | 7:30 pm March 2 Financial Planning for College (for parents students in K-12) High School LGI | 6:30 pm April 21 Middle School Band Concert High School Auditorium | 7 pm March 3 Intermediate School Art Show Intermediate School | 6 pm April 22 High School & Middle School Orchestra Concert High School Auditorium | 7 pm March 3 & March 5 Kindergarten Registration Primary School | 6-8 pm April 23 High School Jazz & Concert Band Concerts High School Auditorium | 7 pm 4 Community Events: April 4th Egg Hunts for our children to enjoy: Bridgeville Borough along with the Bridgeville Fire Department and Ladies Axillary will hold the Bridgeville Borough Easter Egg Hunt: When: Saturday, April 4th Time: 11:00 a.m. Where: Chartiers Park. One of the ways our church serves our local community is through the Community Outreach Center located at Grace Community Church on Prestley Rd. The Community Outreach Center is open every first and third Saturday of each month from 9am to 12pm. We provide food boxes, winter coats, diapers, personal hygiene supplies, emergency supplies and much more. Some advantages to this move are that it is handicapped accessible, there is more space, and we can use more of our donated dollars for food, etc., rather than rent. If clients need, but cannot find a ride to the new location on either the first or second Outreach Days, call the church (412-221-9000) so that other arrangements can be made to serve you. If you are interested in supporting the Community Outreach Center please contact our church office at 412-221-9000 or visit our website at http://www.bridgevilleoutreach.org/. Directions to the New Outreach Center: Heading west on Washington Ave, make a left on Prestley Rd. at the third traffic light (after the train trestle, get in the left lane). Go to top of hill. As you go down the other side, you will see Cavanaugh Landscaping on the right, Grace Community Church sign on the left. Turn left before the Grace sign, go up long driveway (cannot see church from road). Park in the parking lot straight ahead. 5 Weekly Programs for Kids at the Bridgeville Public Library Toddler Time Wednesdays, January 21 – May 13, 10:00 am Storytime for toddlers 2-3 years old with an attentive adult. Alauzen Several years ago I conducted an informal survey among coworkers, family and friends and asked “Do You Compost?” When the answer was “yes”, I wanted to find out more. According to the EPA (United Stated Environmental Protection Agency) website people compost for various reasons: 1. It’s earth friendly – food scraps and yard waste make up 20-30% of the waste stream. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills. 2. It benefits your yard –Adding compost to our clay like soil benefits our flower and vegetable gardens! 3. It is easy – you can start with just leaves and grass and then work your way toward composting your food scraps. 4. It saves money – adding compost to your garden can reduce or eliminate the need to buy chemical fertilizers or compost. The family and friends I talked with reiterated the above benefits. My cousin indicated the most rewarding outcome is the quality of soil he has for his vegetable and flower gardens. A friend discussed the great benefits compost has for the clay like soil in our area. While one person I talked with didn’t compost, she shares her compostable items with a friend who does. The friend, in turn, shares her garden bounty! Another interesting fact about composting according to Nancy Martin, Environmental Educator at Pennsylvania Resources Council, Inc. is that as a soil conditioner, finished compost, in addition to breaking up the clay subsoil, provides nutrients to the soil for uptake by the plants, helps with drainage and moisture retention while also contributing to healthier plants that are better able to resist disease. Are you interested in learning more? Check out the Composting Class scheduled for April 28th! Please see below. Hope to see you all there. Happy composting! It’s Spring and Time to Compost!! Not sure what to do with your kitchen, garden, leaves, and yard scraps? Would you like natural, home-made compost for your lawns and gardens? Expand your recycling efforts to include kitchen scraps and yard debris. You receive a composting bin at class! This PA Resources Council workshop thoroughly covers the importance and benefits of composting, the process, setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance, and ways of using finished compost. Participants will receive an Earth Machine Compost Bin with attendance. This bin, approved across the state as an ideal bin for urban and suburban areas, has an eighty-gallon capacity. Cost $50 single/ $55 couple and includes one compost bin Where: Bridgeville Borough Building When: April 28th @ 7:00 – 8:30 PM For more info or to register go to: www.prc.org or 412-488-7490 X 226 or call Nancy Martin at 412-488-7490 X 247 10 The deadline for the 2nd Quarter “It’s a Bridgeville Thing—Read Over It!” newsletter covering the months of May, June and July, is April 6, 2015.
