Fifth Sunday after Epiphany Choral Eucharist

Fifth Sunday after Epiphany
Choral Eucharist
10.30am
8 February 2015
St Peter’s Cathedral is a Christ-centred, sacramental, inclusive, thinking, missionoriented, faith community. The Cathedral resides on the lands of the Kaurna people whom
we acknowledge as the original custodians of the Adelaide Region.
Welcome: In these weeks between Epiphany and Lent we
increasingly read about how God is made known to and in
the world. The first two Eucharistic readings, verses from
Isaiah 40 and Psalm 147, invite us to reflect on God’s
goodness and greatness. The next two, from Mark 1 and
1 Corinthians 9, show the goodness of God active in the real
world, a world of sorrow, sin and sadness. Jesus bursts into
this world with his Good News campaign. St Paul is well
aware that his ministry is Gospel-driven, finding courage to do and say what
he does in the freedom experienced in his relationship with Jesus Christ.
As we read and listen, ponder and pray, let us open our lives to the lifechanging power of the Gospel; a power that frees us to serve others in creative
generosity.
Welcome to all who revel in the freedom of the Gospel, praise the Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ and gather today to worship the Holy Trinity.

Please stand for the Processional Hymn
1. Thou hidden source of calm repose,
thou all-sufficient love divine,
my help and refuge from my foes,
secure I am, if thou art mine:
and lo, from sin, and grief, and shame,
I hide me, Jesus, in thy name.
3. Jesus, my all in all thou art:
my rest in toil, my ease in pain,
the medicine of my broken heart,
in war my peace, in loss my gain,
my smile beneath the tyrant’s frown,
in shame my glory and my crown;
2. Thy mighty name salvation is,
and keeps my happy soul above;
comfort it brings, and power, and peace,
and joy, and everlasting love:
to me, with thy dear name, are given
pardon, and holiness, and heaven.
4. In want my plentiful supply,
in weakness my almighty power,
in bonds my perfect liberty,
my light in Satan’s darkest hour,
in grief my joy unspeakable,
my life in death, my heaven in hell.
Tune: Melita, JB Dykes 1823-1876
Words: Charles Wesley 1707-1788
Please remain standing.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with
wings like eagles.
Isaiah 40.31
Let us pray (please kneel)
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
3
Confession and Absolution
Christ the Son of God has been revealed as a light to the nations.
Kyrie (choir)
Kyrie eleison
Christe eleison
Kyrie eleison
Lord, have mercy
Christ, have mercy
Lord, have mercy
Let us bring our darkness to his light, confessing our sins in penitence and faith.
Merciful God,
our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us.
Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Almighty God,
who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith:
pardon you and set you free from all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Please stand for the Gloria (choir)
Glory be to God on high,
and in earth peace,
good will towards men.
We praise thee, we bless thee,
we worship thee, we glorify thee,
we give thanks to thee for thy great glory.
O Lord God, heavenly King,
God the Father Almighty.
O Lord the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God,
Son of the Father,
that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.
4
Thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us.
For thou only art holy;
thou only art the Lord;
thou only, O Christ,
with the Holy Ghost,
art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Collect for the day
Saving God,
whose Son, Jesus Christ, healed the sick
and brought them wholeness of body and mind:
inspire us, his disciples,
so that we may constantly proclaim his gospel by our words
and by the dedication and integrity of our lives;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Please sit for the first two readings and the Psalm
First reading: Isaiah 40.21-31 (Read by Joe Thorp)
Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the
beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is
he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like
grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them
like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the
earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their
stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and
the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me,
or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who
created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all
by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing.
Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the
Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God’? Have you not known? Have
you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the
earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He
gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint
and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the
Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
Hear the word of the Lord,
thanks be to God.
5
Psalm 147.1-11 [Chant: Stanford] (Choir sings)
O praise the Lord, for it is good to sing praises to our God:
and to praise him is joyful and right.
The Lord is rebuilding Jerusalem:
he is gathering together the scattered outcasts of Israel.
He heals the broken in spirit:
and binds up their wounds.
He counts the number of the stars:
and calls them all by name.
Great is our Lord, and great is his power:
there is no measuring his understanding.
The Lord restores the humble:
but he brings down the wicked to the dust.
O sing to the Lord a song of thanksgiving:
sing praises to our God upon the harp.
He covers the heavens with cloud, and prepares rain for the earth:
and makes the grass to sprout upon the mountains.
He gives the cattle their food:
and feeds the young ravens that call to him.
He takes no pleasure in the strength of a horse:
nor does he delight in anyone’s legs,
But the Lord’s delight is in those that fear him:
who wait in hope for his mercy.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 9.16-23 (Read by Bruce Williams)
If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation
is laid on me, and woe betide me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do this
of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with
a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I
may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in
the gospel. For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave
to all, so that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order
to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I
myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. To those
outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from
God’s law but am under Christ’s law) so that I might win those outside the law.
6
To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all
things to all people, so that I might by any means save some. I do it all for the
sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.
Hear the word of the Lord,
thanks be to God.
Please stand to sing the Gradual Hymn
1. Sing, my soul, when hope is sleeping,
sing when faith gives way to fears;
sing to melt the ice of sadness,
making way for joy through tears.
2. Sing, my soul, when sickness lingers,
sing to dull the sharpest pain;
sing to set the spirit leaping:
healing needs a glad refrain.
3. Sing, my soul, of him who shaped me,
let me wander far away,
ran with open arms to greet me,
brought me home again to stay.
4. Sing, my soul, when light seems darkest,
sing when night refuses rest,
sing though death should mock the future:
what’s to come by God is blessed.
Tune: Cross of Jesus, John Stainer 1840-1901
Words: John L Bell b. 1949 and Graham Maule b. 1958

Gospel Reading: Mark 1.29-39 (read by The Rev’d Grant Moore)
Gospel Acclamation (remain standing)
Alleluia. (choir)

Alleluia. He bore our sickness and endured our suffering. Alleluia.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
All sing
As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew,
with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and
they told Jesus about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted
her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening, at
sunset, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the
whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick
with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the
demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very
dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And
Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to
him, ‘Everyone is searching for you.’ He answered, ‘Let us go on to the
neighbouring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is
what I came out to do.’ And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the
message in their synagogues and casting out demons.
This is the Gospel of the Lord,
All sing
Children are invited to follow the Gospel procession down the aisle to the altar where their
cross will be collected, and then go to the Cynthia Poulton Hall for Cathedral Kids.

Sermon: The Reverend Dr Lynn Arnold AO
Nicene Creed
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit
and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
9
Please sit or kneel for the prayers of the people (led by Roslyn Marley)
Let us pray for the world and for the Church.
The intercessions conclude with:
Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.
Grant that what we have asked in faith
we may by your grace receive,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
The Lord’s Prayer (sung)

And also with you.
12
Please stand to sing the Offertory Hymn
1. O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray
that all thy church might be for ever one,
grant us at every Eucharist to say
with longing heart and soul, ‘Thy will be done’:
O may we all one bread, one body be,
through this blest sacrament of unity.
2. For all thy church, O Lord, we intercede;
make thou our sad divisions soon to cease;
draw us the nearer each to each, we plead,
by drawing all to thee, O Prince of Peace:
thus may we all one bread, one body be,
through this blest sacrament of unity.
3. We pray thee too for wanderers from thy fold;
O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep,
back to the faith which saints believed of old,
back to the church which still that faith doth keep:
soon may we all one bread, one body be,
through this blest sacrament of unity.
4. So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease,
may we be one with all thy church above,
one with thy saints in one unbroken peace,
one with thy saints in one unbounded love:
more blessèd still, in peace and love to be
one with the Trinity in Unity.
Tune: Song 1, Orlando Gibbons 1583-1625
Words: William Turton 1856-1938
13
Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.
Through your goodness we have these gifts to share,
Accept and use our offerings for your glory
and for the service of your kingdom.
Blessed be God for ever.
The Great Thanksgiving
All glory and honour, be yours always and everywhere,
mighty Creator, everliving God.
We give you thanks and praise for your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary
and lived as one of us.
You anointed him Messiah,
the light of the nations,
and revealed him as the hope
of all who thirst for righteousness and peace.
By his death on the cross
and rising to new life,
he offered the one true sacrifice for sin
and obtained eternal deliverance for his people.
Therefore with angels and archangels,
and with all the company of heaven,
we proclaim your great and glorious name,
for ever praising you and singing:
14
Sanctus and Benedictus (choir)
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Merciful God, we thank you
for these gifts of your creation,
this bread and wine,
and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit,
we who eat and drink them
may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.
On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread;
and when he had given you thanks
he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,
‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.’
After supper, he took the cup, and again giving thanks
he gave it to his disciples, saying,
‘Drink from this, all of you.
This is my blood of the new covenant
shed for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’
Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded:
proclaiming his offering of himself
made once for all upon the cross,
his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,
and looking for his coming again,
we celebrate, with this bread and this cup,
his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice
for the sins of the whole world.
Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: (all sing)
15
Renew us by your Holy Spirit,
unite us in the body of your Son,
and bring us with all your people
into the joy of your eternal kingdom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
with whom, and in whom,
in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
we worship you, Father,
in songs of never-ending praise:
Acclamation (all sing)
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
We who are many are one body,
for we all share in the one bread.
The gifts of God for the people of God.
Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in
remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with
thanksgiving.
Agnus Dei sung by the choir
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us your peace.
Baptised Christians of all denominations are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Please
follow the guidance of stewards and servers in coming forward to the nave altar.
Gluten free bread is available, please ask for this from the priest.
If you do not wish to receive Holy Communion, you may like to come forward and receive a
blessing (simply bow your head as a signal).
Communion Motet (choir)
Lead me Lord Samuel S Wesley 1810-1876
Lead me, Lord,
Lead me in Your righteousness;
Make Your way plain before my face.
16
Prayer after Communion (please kneel)
Let us pray.
God of the nations,
we thank you for nourishing us with this holy sacrament.
Guide us by your presence,
that we may bring your light to those who dwell in darkness
and establish your justice in the earth.
Most loving God,
you send us into the world you love.
Give us grace to go thankfully and with courage
in the power of your Spirit.
Please stand to sing the Post Communion Hymn
1. Awake, our souls; away, our fears;
let every trembling thought be gone;
awake and run the heavenly race,
and put a cheerful courage on.
3. The mighty God, whose matchless power
is ever new and ever young,
and firm endures, while endless years
their everlasting circles run.
2. True, ‘tis a strait and thorny road,
and mortal spirits tire and faint;
but they forget the mighty God
that feeds the strength of every saint:
4. From thee, the overflowing spring,
our souls shall drink a fresh supply,
while such as trust their native strength
shall melt away, and droop, and die.
5. Swift as an eagle cuts the air,
we’ll mount aloft to thine abode;
on wings of love our souls shall fly,
nor tire amidst the heavenly road.
Tune: St Petersburg, DS Bortniansky 1752-1825
Words: Isaac Watts 1674-1748 Isaiah 40.28-31
17
Please remain standing for the Blessing

In the name of Christ. Amen.
