THE REAL MCCOY 2 FEBRUARY 2015 One Block’s Answer to Crime! For our neighbors who are interested in increasing their safety I’m writing about the inexpensive and effective product that one block of concerned neighbors use to signal the presence of intruders in the backyard or driveway of each house in their block. These neighbors each have a driveway alarm and call each other if an alarm, indicating an intruder, goes off. Independence police recommend these alarms. I purchased one on Friday and had installed it, by myself, in under 30 minutes. There are many kinds of these wireless security alarm systems, using motion detection to register intruders. They are mostly under $20. Mine cost $19.00, uses 3 “C” batteries and one nine-volt battery and beeps in my house when someone over 3 feet tall passes by the sensor in my backyard driveway, letting me know that a person is there. Then I can call the police if I think there is a real threat. It is easy to install and the only running costs associated with it are the batteries, replaced once a year. I replace all my smoke alarm batteries on New Year’s Day every year so now I’ll replace my driveway alarm batteries on that same day each year. Each kit includes a receiver and a sensor. The receiver you mount in your house; this is the part that beeps to you that an intruder has entered your driveway. This receiver holds 3 “C” type batteries. The 2nd part is the sensor, which uses a 9-volt battery, and you mount this part on your garage or even in a tree near your garage. The sensor requires one screw to hold the sensor where you choose to put it. It needs to be within 400 feet of the receiver in your house. The outdoor sensor is water proof. These driveway alarm systems can be purchased at many different stores including hardware stores or Wal-Mart, Harbor Freight, Home Depot and Cargo Largo when they are in stock. I am asking for volunteers to contact me if you’d like to help set these up for our neighbors who need one to be installed. I had no trouble installing mine so please allow me to help you set yours up. I’ll help you choose the site to install each piece, make sure it’s within the 400 ft. range and help you test the alarm. Another security measure taken by the block mentioned in “One Block’s Answers to Crime” is getting Independence Power and Light to install security dusk to dawn lights in the alley behind their houses. More details about the costs and how to get these security lights installed behind your house in next month’s issue. Or please call me about these security dusk to dawn lights also. Starting with just a few houses a week, her business quickly grew to 3 to 4 houses a day. Over the years she has expanded to include churches, offices, commercial and public buildings, and more. She now has 3 teams of workers doing 8 to 10 jobs a day, and counting! Among her most well-known clientèle are the historic Vaile Mansion (as well as a hand full of their volunteers and neighbors), the Log Cabin Court House on the square, 50 Plus Pharmacy, and many other Independence area churches and businesses. From the beginning, Saundra's Cleaning Service has been a family business. Her mother Kay has worked for me for 15 years, doing scheduling and correspondence. Her son Ben handles the website and marketing. Her daughters Sarah and Heather, son-in-law Brett and his mother Rhonda are also part of the team. I have lived with my family in the McCoy Neighborhood for about 10 years, and served on the Health Chair in previous years. As the result of multiple testimonies, I have opened up an office, known as, “Directed Minds/Kavanah Neurofeedback for Life,” on the Independence Square, at 20l West Lexington, Suite 105. Neurofeedback is a scientific-based brain training that is non-invasive and does not use medications. With the use of high technology, moment-to-moment monitoring; self-regulation skills are encouraged and new and healthier pathways can be created in the brain. Neurofeedback training can affect Central Nervous System stability, sleep/wake cycles, cognitive/sensory processing, moods, emotions, memory and age-related cognitive decline. It is commonly used to improve the symptoms related to ADD/ADHD, such as poor focus, inattention, distractibility, impulsivity and low motivation. Depression, anxiety, PTSD and other emotional and physical issues can be positively affected by improving brain wave patterns. Science has now proven that in many instances the brain can heal or at least improve its functioning. Improving brain function will improve Central Nervous System balance and performance, resulting in increased calmness and compliance in many instances. I will be glad to share more of my journey in becoming a Neurofeedback Clinician for those who are interested. ”. She was distressed during the months when it was absent and was concerned that it would no longer be found there. That lapse was when we were waiting for the new police crime website, raidsonline.com, to begin. When she realized it was something you got on your computer, she was concerned that some folks don't have computer access. Her concern was eased however, when she saw the Crime Report on page 10 of the January newsletter. We have Denise and Neil Sherman to thank for making this possible. They have combed through the crime information for us for years. Thanks Denise and Neil! 10 FEBRUARY 2015 Reminder! All newsletter submissions need to be sent in to Leslie Sherman by the 15th of each month to ensure their publication in the next months issue. Thank you! Welcoming New Neighbors We would like to welcome new neighbors with a personal visit, gift, and mention in our newsletter. Let us know who you are by contacting Vicky Trussel, 816-723-7610, or Susan Rosenquist, at 816-224-2002. If you have a new neighbor, let us know their name, address, and, if possible, phone number.
