Growing in God Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Meditation: Who do you take your troubles to? Jesus' disciples freely brought their troubles to Him because they found Him ready and able to deal with any difficulty, affliction, or sickness which they encountered. When Simon brought Jesus to his home, his mother-in-law was instantly healed because Jesus heard Simon's prayer. Do you allow Jesus to be the Lord and Healer in your life, family, and community? Approach Him with expectant faith. God's healing power restores us not only to health but to active service and care of others. There is no trouble He does not want to help us with and there is no bondage He can't set us free from. Do you take your troubles to Him with expectant faith that He will help you? Jerome, a 3rd century church father, applies the lesson of the healing of Simon's mother-in-law to us: "Can you imagine Jesus standing before your bed and you continue sleeping? It is absurd that you would remain in bed in his presence. Where is Jesus? He is already here offering himself to us. ….Therefore, let us ask the Lord to grasp our hand. 'And at once,' he says, 'the fever left her.' Immediately as her hand is grasped, the fever flees." Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, You have all power to heal and to deliver. There is no trouble nor bondage You cannot overcome. Set me free to serve You joyfully and to love and serve others with a generous heart. May nothing hinder me from giving myself wholly to You and to Your service. Copied in part (and with permission) from dailyscripture.net "In a time when it's considered taboo to be a Catholic and so many are either not practicing their faith, ashamed to speak up for what we believe or even embarrassed to admit they are Catholics, this book gives us our righteous pride in our faith that Christ, Himself gave us and the rich history that many great saints, who have gone before us have passed down to us. It is now our turn to more fully understand what it means to be a Catholic and what our faith truly stands for and become fully engaged. For if we understand what we believe, we need to set this world on fire and it begins now, with reading this book." - Rediscovering Catholicism The weekend of Feb. 14 & 15, Msgr. Dubell invites each family to recapture the story of our faith and the passion to live it by reading Rediscover Catholicism by Matthew Kelly. The books will be located on tables at the exits of the church. We ask that families take only one copy to share so there are enough for everyone. Enjoy! St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry Needs In the Gospel today, we find that Jesus would rise very early before dawn and go to a deserted place to pray and then He went out to preach and to heal. Please keep those in need in your prayers and please take a bag that will be distributed today, fill it with some of the items listed below, and bring it to Mass next weekend. Your donations will help stock our food pantry. The food pantry is in special need of: breakfast cereals, jelly, canned fruit, tuna fish, meals in a can (e.g., SpaghettiOs), and macaroni and cheese. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (609-953-0021) so that together we can bring the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness, and dread. 556-Page 2 Tombola Baskets Pre-Ticket Sale! Prophecies, Apparitions and our Encounters with God Thursday, February 12th St. Joan of Arc, Marlton – in Pedata Hall Claims of prophecies and apparitions have been part of our Church’s history since the beginning. Some encounters, such as at Guadalupe, have changed the course of history, while others are meant to be personal. While encounters with God are not rare, misinterpretation and fraud are not rare either. How can we tell the difference? How does the Church investigate claims of predictions or miracles? What about the rapture, Malachy’s prophecies, and predictions of a chastisement? Is our Blessed Mother speaking to us and what does she have to say? Join us at St. Joan of Arc on Thursday, February 12th as we explore the answers to these questions. Our presenter will be Mrs. Effie Murphy, MA. Mass Change for this Week Please note, we will only have one Mass on Tuesday, February 10th , at 8:00 AM. 556-Page 5 2015 – Year of Consecrated Life In honor of the Year of Consecrated Life, we will try to present a short biography each month of a religious sister or brother whose feast day falls during that month. This month’s saint will be Josephine Bakhita of the Sudan. Spiritual Adoption Program Fifth Month Your Spiritually adopted baby is already well-formed internally and externally. All major developments have taken place. She only needs time to gain weight and grow strong. Pray that the Lord of life fills her mother’s heart with love to provide the time for her baby to grow. Please pray daily the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen: n Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love You very much. I beg You to spare the life of the unborn child that I have spiritually adopted who may be in danger of abortion. Amen. Saint Josephine Bakhita Feast day February 8 St. Josephine Bakhita was born in the Sudan. At the age of 7 she was kidnapped and sold into the slave market of the Sudan. Her “owners” called her Bakhita, which means fortunate. She was sold several times, brutally beaten and tortured. When Bakhita was 15 she was sold to an Italian family and eventually moved with them to Italy. It was in Italy – through the Canossian sisters – that Bakhita first learned about Christ. In 1890 she was baptized, and confirmed, taking the name of Josephine. When the family decided to return to the Sudan, Josephine refused to go with them. With the help of the Canossian sisters and the local bishop Josephine gained her freedom. She chose to stay in Italy and eventually become a Canossian sister. Sister Josephine was esteemed for her goodness and for the way she cared for all who were in need. She was a true witness of the love of God. She once said, "Be good, love the Lord, pray for those who do not know Him. What a great grace it is to know God!" St. Josephine Bakhita was canonized in 2000. Her feast day has been designated as the International Day of Prayer to Stop Human Trafficking. Legion of Mary The Legion of Mary has a travelling statue of the Blessed Mother available to visit your home for a week or two. She will be delivered directly to you. If you are homebound and would like a visit from a parishioner and/or someone to pray the Rosary with you, this can be arranged as well. Please contact Stella Denn at 609-9533335. Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes ~ February 11 The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is also the World Day of the Sick. Let us keep the sick and suffering, and all who care for them, in our prayers. When we touch the sick and needy, we touch the suffering body of Christ. – Mother Teresa 556-Page 6 Liturgical Ministry Schedule for February 13 & 14 If you are scheduled for a date that you cannot serve, please ask another Liturgical Minister to substitute for you.
