10 February 2015 Volume 3 Principal’s Message – Sr Ann-Maree Nicholls, sgs Dear Parents, Caregivers and Children Opening School Mass Thank you to the many families and students who attended our 2015 Opening School Mass on Sunday. It was wonderful to have the school so well represented, and to be able to spend time in prayer with the Parishioners. We were very proud of our Year 6 students who received their leadership badges. We eagerly anticipate their guidance and support in the important role they undertake as Senior Leaders in 2015. P & F Working Bee As you entered the school grounds on Monday it was very noticeable that a significant amount of work was achieved at our Working Bee on Sunday. A big thank you to the Dads and Mums who assisted with the many jobs completed. A special thank you to Adam Cairns, Ken Gargan, Peter Harnisch and Damien Sullivan for the co-ordination of tasks completed. The staff and students are very grateful to be in an environment that is well cared for. Thank you. Parent Information Evening All parents are invited to attend our Parent Information Evening for Years 1 - 6 which is scheduled for TONIGHT from 6.00pm – 7.30pm. You are invited to gather on the Veranda of the Good Samaritan Hall at 6.00pm for wine and cheese which will be provided by the Parents & Friends Association. At 6.30pm you will then be invited to your child/ren’s classroom. The evening is not a Parent/Teacher interview but a time for parents to receive important information relating to classroom procedures together with a brief overview of the curriculum. At 7.00pm teachers at each grade level will repeat their presentation. The evening will conclude at 7.30pm. This format will allow parents to meet/see all teachers; it only requires parents to be available on one evening and it will provide an overview of the curriculum for each grade level. The evening is designed for parents only. We look forward to seeing all families at our Parent Information Evening. Reminder – Student Validation Form All families have received a Student Validation Form for each child attending Sts Peter & Paul’s School. These forms contain all the current details we have on file for your child / children including emergency contact details. It is very important that these details are accurate and up to date at all times. Would you please check this information and make any necessary changes. All forms need to be signed and returned to the School Office by this Friday 13th February. Thank you. Year 6 Leadership Day Next Monday, 16th February our Senior Leaders will gather in the Good Samaritan Hall for their Leadership Day. Throughout the day the Year 6 students will be engaged in activities that emphasise and develop leadership qualities as they commence and look forward to their final year at Sts Peter & Paul's School. Elections for 8 House Captains and 8 Student Councillors will take place during the afternoon. The Senior Leaders for 2015 will be announced to the students on Tuesday and published in the Newsletter. Leadership badges will be presented at next Wednesday morning’s Assembly. Parking I would like to remind families that SCHOOL PARKING IS NOT PERMITTED along the driveway in front of the Church and beside the Parish Pastoral Centre. Also, this area should not be used as a pick up or drop off zone for students coming or going home from school. Parking in this area is strictly for Parish use only. Thank you for your continued support as we strive to ensure a safe environment for our school community. Tomorrow is World Day of Prayer for the Sick. Let us remember those who are sick in our family and within our community. We commend them all to Christ’s healing touch. We turn to you in faith, Lord our God, and beg you to help those who are sick, giving them healing and strength. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. On Ash Wednesday, we are called into Lent by being signed with ashes reminding us to simplify our lives and turn to the Gospel. The following are the times for our Ash Wednesday celebrations: ASH WEDNESDAY – 18 FEBRUARY: Mass will be celebrated for Years 4-6 at 9am in the Church. A Liturgy will be celebrated for Prep to Year 3 at 11.10am in the Good Samaritan Hall. Family members are welcome to join the students and teachers for either of these liturgies. The liturgical colour for Lent is purple. This is the colour of repentance, fasting and sorrow. Next Tuesday, 17 February is called Shrove Tuesday. The custom of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday is to symbolise the final ‘feasting’ before the Lenten fast begins. Fasting enables us to simplify our lives so that our vision becomes clear. We start to get rid of all that is unnecessary in our lives so that we see more clearly what really matters to us. OPENING SCHOOL MASS AND PRESENTATION OF BADGES FOR YEAR 6 LEADERS The Church was certainly ‘bursting at the seams’ last Sunday as we celebrated our Opening School Mass and presented the Year 6 students with their leadership badges. Many of the Year 3 children also brought forward their name cards as part of the process of enrolment for the Sacrament of Penance. As we begin the school year, let us pray that the students of Sts Peter and Paul’s may learn to seek God in all people and all events, and that God will bless each member of our Parish and School communities. Loving God, our school has its existence because of you. As we come together to form our community for this year, may the contribution we each bring be of a nurturing nature, so that our community will grow in faith, peace and love. APA News...Mr Damien Sullivan Uniform News I am very happy to report the great news about how fabulous our students are looking in their uniforms this year. Students are being very responsible in ensuring they are wearing the correct uniform to school each day. Well done girls and boys, and thanks to all the mums and dads for your support in seeing that the right choices are made each morning. Drop Off and Pick Up Line Procedures As most parents know all well, before and after school are very busy times for traffic around all schools. To help keep our children safe and to keep driving frustrations to a minimum at school drop off and pick up times Sts Peter and Paul’s have procedures in place that all school families must be aware of and follow at these busy times. Included with this newsletter is a sheet detailing these procedures. It is given to new families who enrol at the school, but all families must make themselves familiar with these important guidelines. I ask that all parents read over this sheet and stick to the process outlined. Thanks for your cooperation. Arrival Time It is very important that all children arrive in time to commence the school day by 8.40am. When children arrive after this time they miss the opportunity to be well prepared for the day’s learning and unfortunately impact upon the learning of other children. Teachers understand that on occasions there may be a hold up in getting to school, but this should really be an exception. If a student arrives at school after 8.45am they MUST go to the office and sign in (Prep to Year 3 students must be accompanied by a parent/caregiver). The office staff will then give the student a late slip to hand to their class teacher which lets teachers know that they have been through the office. Visitors Register Parents who visit to assist at the school (eg. tuckshop, class reading, etc.) are required to drop into the office upon arriving at school to sign their name in the Visitors Register. A lanyard will be issued to be worn during your visit. This is a Workplace Health and Safety Requirement. We also ask that parents call back into the school office when they are leaving school to sign out and return their lanyard. Parents who are collecting children from school before 3:00pm are also required to come to the office to sign out their child. Office staff will ring the classroom to arrange for children to come down to meet parents there. All the best for the week ahead! These time trials will also be used for the CPSSA Zone 2 Team nomination being held on 19 March at Chandler Aquatic Centre. It was lovely to catch up with students and hear about their holiday reading adventures. This month we celebrate ‘Love of Reading Month’. It’s a great time to reflect on the ways that reading enriches our lives and can open our minds to new and exciting ideas. Keep an eye on our outside noticeboard for ways to share your favourite book. Can you guess who our celebrity readers are? This Term we are also exploring our favourite books by Australian authors. What makes them such good books to read? We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday night at the Parent Information Evening. Feel free to drop in and say hello. The aim of the program is to support children’s literacy acquisition by developing reading skills in the vital early years of learning. The program th is held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 1.55 to 2.55pm, commencing on Tuesday 10 February. The success of the program relies upon our generous volunteers and we would like to invite any interested parents, friends, grandparents, and parishioners to participate. We welcome all offers of assistance and younger children are also most welcome. A training session will be held to familiarise tutors with the reading process and give them some strategies for assisting the students. It is very rewarding to see the children’s skills and confidence increase throughout the sessions and it is also a great way to meet other members of our community. We had a turnout of around 40 parents and staff, which was fantastic! Peter Harnisch was our leader and, as usual, put in a massive day. Without Peter’s leadership attributes the day would have not been as successful as it was. Chrissy and Brendan Quinn, with help from John and Tara Collins, made sure the team was very well fed by providing scrumptious steak sandwiches and a couple of coldies at lunch. New lines have been marked on the oval, an 8m skip bin filled to the brim, odd handyman works completed, steps on the oval re-stained, gutters cleaned and several carpentry works done just to name a few of the jobs that were completed. Overall, we had an excellent result due to the participation of our incredible school community. Thank you to all of you who took the time out of their busy weekend to assist our wonderful teachers in improving our children’s learning environment! In the kitchen we are cooking beef tacos using ingredients from the garden, baking a chocolate apple cake, making delicious caramel blondies and baking creamy corn mini quiches. For craft we have lots of Valentine’s Day activities including cards, beads, paper flowers and gifts. Inside we are playing Top Trumps, building towers, using hama beads and setting up shops. We are planting bean seeds, weeding and watering the garden. In the playground we are playing soccer, tail tag and handball as well as building great tunnels in the sand pit. Pick Up / Drop Off Line Procedures There are two drop-off zones available; one at the ‘top’ of the school in Collings Street, and the ‘bottom’ line is Alexandra Street. The drop-off line operates in the morning from 8.20am to 8.40am and the pick-up line operates in the afternoon from 3.00pm to 3.20pm. The purpose of the controlled drop-off and pick-up lines is to ensure the safety of children and the continual movement of traffic. Alternatively, you may choose to park your car in a legal parking spot and walk your child into the school. We request that you do not park inside people’s driveways, in the Church car park, or in the school driveway. The procedures are: Only the first two cars in line can collect or drop passengers off. If your child is not ready for collection, you will need to move from the line, do a lap and rejoin the end of the line. No cars can leave the line until the first car has exited the line (otherwise accidents can occur). There is no parking outside the school or church in Alexandra Street during the Stop-Drop-Go period from 7.00am until 9.00am and 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Any children left after 3.20pm will be taken to the school office by the teacher on duty and if required, the parents will be contacted. Cars are not to enter Collings Street via Victoria Street as this causes congestion and is a safety risk. Please enter the Collings Street line via Grosvenor Street. The children are supervised at all times when using the pick-up lines. These procedures have been developed in conjunction with the Council and Police to ensure maximum safety for our children. If your child or teen has difficulties with anxiety or just seems to have too many worries, we would like to introduce you to BRAVE Self-Help – an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. It was developed by a group of researchers from the University of Queensland and now, with the support of beyondblue, this program is now freely available to all young people aged 8 -17 years old who are living in Australia. BRAVE Self-Help provides strategies for children and teenagers to better cope with their worries. There are 4 programs available, one for children aged 8-12 years, one for teenagers aged 12-17 years and one for parents of children at these ages respectively. The program can be accessed as often as you like, from the comfort of your own home. For more information, or to register for the program, please visit www.brave4you.psy.uq.edu.au. Class Photo Order Forms will be sent home with your child/ren this week. Your child’s name is located on the top of the form. A Green Sibling Order Form will be sent home with the eldest child.
