Dear Parents, Caregivers and Children
Prep Enrolments - 2016
Prep enrolment details for 2016 are now required from our existing families. If you have a child
due to commence Prep next year (born between 1st July, 2010 and 31st July, 2011) and already
have children attending Saints Peter and Paul’s School please ensure that the enrolment form
together with a copy of your child’s birth certificate, baptismal certificate and immunization record
is returned to the school office by Friday 20th March, 2015. The demand for Prep enrolment in
2016 is once again extremely high; therefore it is essential that we have our current families
accounted for. If you do not have an enrolment package please download one from the school
website or collect one from the school office.
School Fees & Levies 2015
School Fee accounts have been emailed last week to all families except those who have direct
debit arrangements. Please check that you have received your account, if not contact Bernie
Shelton in the school office. If you have not given us an up to date email address could you
please provide this as soon as possible. Families experiencing difficulties are asked to make an
appointment to see the Principal.
Parking
I would like to remind families that SCHOOL PARKING IS NOT PERMITTED along the
driveway in front of the Church and beside the Parish Pastoral Centre. Also, this area
should not be used as a pick up or drop off zone for students coming or going home from
school. Parking in this area is strictly for Parish use only. Thank you for your continued
support as we strive to ensure a safe environment for our school community.
As we begin our Lenten journey, let us pray. Merciful God, tenderly guide us through this Lenten
season. May your love within us be seen in what we do. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

APRE News – Mr Brendan Schostakowski
LENTEN PRAYER ASSEMBLIES
Our Lenten Prayer assemblies begin this Wednesday, 25 February, at 9am in the Church and will
continue each week during the Season of Lent. Year 5 Blue will lead our first assembly with the
theme of Faithfulness.
‘Child of the Week’ certificates will be presented at each Lenten assembly.
PROJECT COMPASSION
Project Compassion money boxes were distributed last week and children can bring these along
to their teachers over the coming weeks of Lent. These donations will be collected each
Wednesday during the Lenten Prayer assemblies.
During the weeks of Lent we will be introduced to people from different parts of the world whose
lives have been transformed with help from Caritas Australia. At each Lenten assembly members
of the Year 6 Care and Concern Committee will share these stories with the school
community. In this first week of Lent we hear the story of Eric and Ma from Fiji.
Twenty-five years ago, married couple Eric and Ma worked hard, but their farm was
unprofitable. They had a very limited income and diet, until they took a training course at
the Tutu Rural Training Centre (supported by Caritas Australia). Using the skills they learnt
there, the couple have built a successful family life, and a thriving farm that provides them
with a healthy diet and sustainable source of income.
Your donation to Project Compassion helps people in isolated areas of Fiji gain the skills they
need to grow food for life.
PARISH INVITATION TO YEAR LEVEL MASS – YEAR 5
During the year, the parish invites the families of Sts Peter and Paul’s school in year level groups to attend Mass and
receive a blessing. This special Mass of Blessing helps to foster the relationship between parish and school.
The Year 5 students have received a special invitation to celebrate 8am Mass this Sunday 1 March followed by
morning tea. We look forward to seeing the Year 5 children and their families at this Eucharistic celebration.

GOSPEL REFLECTION FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT – 1 March
Mark 9:2-10 The Transfiguration
The Transfiguration is quite a unique event in the life of Jesus. One evening Jesus took three disciples up a mountain
to pray – probably not the first time Jesus had done this. They thought they knew what they were in for – when
suddenly they were knocked to the ground by a blinding light. Jesus was transformed, his face and clothes dazzling
like the sun – something of the divinity of Jesus had broken through.
There is a parallel in our own lives. Long hum-drum days can be pierced by a momentary insight of eternity. We
realise with a new certainty that we are loved by God, that we have an eternal destiny, and that life is of immense
value.
This is true for every human being. Hence arises our duty to show respect for others and to support them in
securing the basic needs of life.
During this time of Lent:
May we recover the truth and freshness of the message that Jesus brings to us in the Gospel.
May we find ways to assure others of the love of God and of the immense value of the lives they lead.
May we be so filled with the Spirit of Jesus that we look for every opportunity to continue his mission on earth.

Class Coordinator Meeting
For parents who have indicated they are willing to take on this role, the first Class Coordinators meeting will be held next week
on Tuesday 3 March in the school staff room at 8.50am. We will be discussing aspects of the Class Coordinator role including
staying in touch with parents and teachers, support for students, distributing information, organising social gatherings and being
a point of contact between class parents and the P & F. For other parents who are interested in being a Class Coordinator,
please let your classroom teacher know. The school greatly appreciates the wonderful support that our Class Coordinators
provide.
Stop, Drop and Go Zones
For our pick-up and drop-off times to continue to work smoothly and safely there are a few very important procedures that we
ask parents and students to remember.
1. Only the first two cars in the pick-up line after school should be loading at any time. Students must not approach
parents’ cars to attempt to hop in, to hand school bags over to parents or to lean through the window for a chat while
their car is still in the queue after school.
2. Only the first three cars in the drop-off line before school (two for the top drop-off area on Collings Street) should be
unloading at any time - Students should not be hopping out of the car in the morning until their car is one of the first
three in the line.
3. Where possible parents should remain in the car. If parents need to assist their children with a school bag before
school this should be done quickly so as to not hold up the line. In cases where parents would like to say a longer
goodbye or walk their child to the gate, please find a place to park in one of the surrounding streets.
We ask parents to please discuss these important points with their children.
School Swimming
School Swimming is well underway for all students from Years 3 to 6. Parents could assist the school greatly by ensuring their
children are bringing to school everything they will need for swimming lessons. In particular this must include swimmers,
swimming cap and a swimming shirt.
Arrival Time
It is very important that all children arrive in time to commence the school day by 8.40am. When children arrive after this time
they miss the opportunity to be well prepared for the day’s learning and unfortunately impact upon the learning of other children.
Teachers understand that on occasions there may be a hold up in getting to school, but this should really be an exception. If a
student arrives at school after 8.45am they MUST go to the office and sign in (Prep to Year 3 students must be accompanied by
a parent/caregiver). The office staff will then give the student a late slip to hand to their class teacher which lets teachers know
that they have been through the office.
Naming Children’s Belongings
We ask that parents please check their children’s belongings to see that they are named and have this year’s class. In particular
hats, lunch boxes and drink bottles are turning up in the lost property with last year’s details which makes it more difficult for our
helpers to get them back to their rightful owners. Thanks for your help with this.
Congratulations to Ysabella (3B), CJ (2G), Ashley (2R) and Ben (2R) who were drawn out of the box as Bee Champions at last
week’s assembly. They have been helping our school to be a happy and safe place for students.

Good luck to Claire Robertson who has been nominated to attend the Lytton District Basketball trials on 10 March.
House Captains and Senior Leaders:
I look forward to a great year with our newly inducted house leader’s for 2015. They are busy with their first task of
preparing the Senior Swimming Carnival War Cry banners. The senior leaders have chosen their theme song for the
year and we will unveil these in the coming weeks. Thanks for your enthusiastic start to your role Leaders!
Upcoming dates for Sport Trials:
* School Touch Trials for possible Lytton District selection – Wednesday 25 February, 12.30pm – 1.10pm (Weather
permitting), on the oval.
* School Football (Soccer) Trials for possible Lytton District selection – Thursday 26 February, 11.00am – 11.45am (Weather
permitting), on the oval. Protective gear required.
* School Hockey Trials for possible Lytton District selection – Thursday 12 March, 11.00am – 11.45am (Weather permitting),
on the oval. Protective gear, hockey stick and ball required.
The above sports will have trials held for Boys and Girls 12yrs (DOB 2003 – 2005). Eligible students are invited to attend school
trials for possible Lytton District nomination.
Please meet outside the Good Samaritan Hall and ensure you have appropriate shoes, sports equipment and shirt to
participate. Please bring your hat and lunch with you.
* School Rugby League Trials for possible Lytton District selection – Friday 27 February, 12.15pm – 1.00pm. Protective Gear
Required. Boys 12 yrs trials (DOB 2003) and 11 yrs (DOB 2004-2005) are invited to attend school trials for possible Lytton
District nomination.
Please meet outside the Good Samaritan Hall. Weather permitting we will head to the oval for trials. Ensure you have planned
to bring appropriate shoes and sports shirt to participate. Please bring your hat and lunch with you.

News flash - Senior Swimming Carnival 2015 Update
Preparations are well underway for our upcoming house sports event. We will travel to Langlands Pool, Stones
Corner, on the 11 March with Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 for our annual Swimming Carnival.
Some details include:
* Langland’s Pool is 50m with 8 lanes. A 25m divider will be placed across the pool for shorter races.
* Time trials started in class this week to assist with planning the appropriate event for each student. Please ensure
you swim to your ability in these lessons as this information assists us in placing you appropriately for your events.
* Events include Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and some Butterfly events over 25m and 50m distances. We also
hold an invitational King and Queen of the pool over the lunch break. Stay tuned on the day for our selected
swimmers! The day finishes with house relays in the shallow end, before returning to school.
* Student will be swimming against their age group (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and Boys vs Boys / Girls vs
Girls.
* There are 2 point scores running concurrently:
1) House points score for participation and overall placing in every race for Champion House
2) Generally the top 3 races/Age in the 50m events calculating Age Championship
*Times taken in classes over the next 2 weeks will assist with School Carnival race allocations and possible
upcoming Sts Peter and Paul’s School Swimming representation at the Zone 2 Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival.
If you have any concerns please see your class teacher at an appropriate time to discuss your thoughts regarding the
2015 sports calendar.

Dinner Dance – Friday 22nd May
There have been a few changes to the Dinner Dance this year!
The Dinner Dance is returning home... So to speak... We are moving the event to the school oval under a marquee bathed in
moonlight. More exciting details will follow in the coming weeks but we promise there will be fun, frivolity and lots of dancing...
So watch this space!

Health & Wellbeing Committee
The first meeting this year for the Health & Wellbeing Committee will be held on Wednesday, 25 February from 2-3pm in the

Day on the Green
Head on down to the school oval this Sunday 1st March for a relaxing afternoon of music, food and fun as we welcome the new
school year in with a 'Day on the Green'. Come and get your groove on with some fresh local music. There will be
complimentary baked ham rolls and a sausage sizzle for all. The wonderful Lexi and Mark from Jumpin Around Jumping Castles
have generously donated jumping castles to keep the kids entertained again this year. Cold drinks, chips and lollies will also be
available to purchase. So get a group together, dig out the picnic blankets, put the 'adult drinks' on ice and head on down to the
school oval Sunday 1 March, 2 - 5pm!
Can you help out for ½ an hour on Sunday? We need your help in supervising your children on the
jumping castles. Without volunteers we will unfortunately need to shut down the jumping castles.

OSHC
ACTIVITIES: We have lots of fun activities planned for OSHC this week! In the kitchen we are cooking yummy
zucchini slice, baking orange and poppy seed muffins, making energy balls and cooking mini pizzas with fresh basil
from the garden. Craft activities include flag bunting, painting and decorating cardboard farm animals, drawing
colour explosion pictures and doing butterfly paintings. Inside we are playing lego, using the train sets and making
playdough. We are using the Lunar Calendar to organise our garden. This week we are planting leafy greens for the
first week following the new moon. Outside we are skipping, playing badminton, using hula hoops, playing handball
and soccer. We have oval games on Tuesday and Thursday for Years 2-6.
2015 BOOKINGS: All families are reminded that a new Enrolment Form and Booking Form must be completed
every year for each child. Please contact OSHC for an Enrolment Form or more information.
OSHC CHAMPIONS: OSHC Champions this week are Jessica Drapes, Jasmine Hislop, Daniel Keegan, Maximus
Gibson and Grace Fleming. Well done Jessica, Jasmine, Daniel, Maximus and Grace!

School Banking
Tomorrow there will be a table outside the school office from 8am – 10am if you would like to open a School Bank Account. This
is the simplest way to open a School Banking Account for your child, just bring your driver's licence and children's birth
certificates and your child will be banking within the week.
School Banking Co-ordinators
We have had a lovely response of offers to help with school banking, Thank you so much. This year we are in the wonderful
position of having a core group and a casual list of helpers who are able to come in once a month. If you volunteered and
haven't heard from us yet, we will call you over the next week.

Toowong Orthodontics
Toowong Orthodontics is delighted to support St Peters and Paul's school by creating a
fund designed to help students attend such events as the future problem solving program
when interstate or international travel is required. As an ongoing sponsorship any child from
Sts Peter and Paul's who commences full orthodontic treatment $50 will be donated to the
fund. In addition any child who attends an assessment appointment $5 will be donated.
No referral is required and HICAPS is available for health fund rebates on the day.

the train station is only a couple of minutes walk.
Aussie Hoops is back! AUSSIE HOOPS @ Sts Peter and Paul’s!
Basketball Queensland is offering a “girls only” and a “boys only” Aussie Hoops
program this term at Sts Peter and Paul’s. Aussie Hoops is all about participation
and fun. Aussie Hoops has a national coaching curriculum and sequentially
developed program consisting of warm-up games, skill activities and modified
games, all delivered by accredited coaches. It’s for Prep to Year 6 students aged
5 to 11 years. Each new participant receives a ball, a bag and a reversible
singlet. Girls also get a pair of socks and a hair ribbon in their “Pink Pack”.

The program will be held on Monday afternoons from 3.10pm to 4.10pm for the girls starting on the 2 of March for 7 weeks

(last session on 27 April) and Saturday morning from 9.30am to 10.30am starting on the 7 of March for the boys for 7 weeks

(last session on 9 May). Cost is $75 which includes the Aussie Hoops pack or just $55 if you are a returning participant and
already have your Aussie Hoops gear. PLEASE NOTE – THERE WILL BE NO SESSIONS HELD THROUGH THE SCHOOL
HOLIDAYS!!
