What an exciting time to look forward. So many new and returning faces are anxious to take us into a rewarding tenure. Thank you to all who have volunteered to work with me for the next two years and to those who elected us to serve. W Many fantastic ideas were listed at the General Meeting for trips and events. Some are very ambitious but with volunteers to help make them happen we can look forward to lots of great times together. They can’t happen without your participation and I know you all will come through. I will need more help in the form of Chairpersons as my work load and health are taking their toll on my time and energy. I am seeking a Speaker Chairperson this year. There are many of us on the Board who will assist you so please don’t think it is an all consuming task. But we do need your help. Please contact me or a Board Member if you are willing to step up and work with us. Please don’t forget to renew your dues and help us bring in new members. We still have our non-profits and scholarships to support and membership dues are a key part of this support. I look forward to greeting all of you at our up-coming meetings and events. In the meantime please stay happy, healthy and love much! Membership A Reminder… Most memberships expired on December 31, so it’s time to renew. If you were a new member who joined during 2014, then your membership will expire one year from the date you joined, and you will receive a notice. They have just opened and Penny and I lunched there recently. Victoria Chacon, a veteran restaur-ateur from Ensenada, has a passion for world cuisine and has styled a very cozy, bright and charming interior space. You can’t always tell a book by its cover comes to mind here. The outside is simplistic and advertises lobster burritos. The inside is a surprise and the surprise definitely continues to the food. Sandy Eddahbi ictoria's Café is offering us a $10.00 threecourse set menu. This will include: either Soup (Clam Chowder or Vegetable) or Salad; Main course choice of Grilled Fish or Carne Asada Steak, Chili Relleno, Cheese Enchilada and Guacamole. Dessert to be Victoria's Homemade Pineapple Upside Down Cake. Victoria’s Mexican Specialty drink (a mix of chia, lemon, and celery) is also included. Sounds delish! Right? All this and entertainment too. They are building a 2nd floor bar and have agreed to serve us upstairs so we can take in the breathtaking views. The Rosarito Restaurant Scene I have lived in Rosarito for three years now and, being a foodie, I have hoped to find somebody that did a column on the local restaurant scene. Occasionally we have had a new restaurant review in one of our local papers, but not on a continual basis. We had the Rosarito Town Crier that used to run restaurant ads for holidays and special occasions, but do not have that anymore. We have local word of mouth. Since becoming the head of Continued on page 8 FEBRUARY 2015 USBC COMMUNICATOR 5 Just for fun! T he USBC is having a contest and we want you to be a part of it. Each month we’ll feature a baby/small child picture in the Communicator and at the general meeting we’ll ask if anyone can identify who the member is. To keep this contest fair and honest put your picture in a sealed envelope and give it to Dorothy Southern or any member of the Board. Dorothy will be the only one who knows their idenity. There will be a small prize every month for whoever guesses correctly and a grand prize at the end of the year for whoever guessed the most pictures correctly. Sunshine Amy Valenzuela Education Amy Valenzuela I T t’s good to see Bruce Southern back home. And he’s really happy to be here. Keep up the good work, Bruce… After a very long battle with Multiple Sclerosis, Linda Weekes passed away on January 25th. And as her husband Paul said, “Linda’s in a better place.” he holidays are all over and while all the world was back in order, our little Kindergartners were having a grand party in Primo Tapia. Judy and Jack Westphal made tons of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. My brother in law donated beautiful big, red delicious apples, as well as oranges and a lollipop of tamarindo which he said the children would like and then suck on the orange. They received their wonderful pom pom caps and a bag of candy as well. Through the kind generosity of Sister Clare, each child had a brand new plush stuffed animal which they chose. I had big plastic bags for them and all went home "loaded." Thanks to all who were involved in making it a very special day for them. Robbie Molnar baked mini cupcakes and they were blue dough. Each child had two and they were the hit of the day. At noon the party was over and there were lots of very happy faces. Tuition is due and will be given to our scholars for next semester fees which are due at the end of January. Your membership gives us the revenue and so we thank you for sharing with them.
