D: Martin Scorsese, David Tedeschi | USA | 2014 | 95 min | G
Featuring: Robert Silvers, Timothy Garton Ash, James Baldwin,
Mary Beard, Michael Chabon, Noam Chomsky, Norman Mailer
and Susan Sontag
By award-winning director Martin Scorsese.
The 50 Year Argument, directed by acclaimed filmmaker
Martin Scorsese and his long-time documentary
collaborator David Tedeschi, rides the waves of literary,
political and cultural history as charted by its subject;
the influential publication The New York Review of Books,
America’s leading journal of ideas for over 50 years.
This provocative film explores the power of these ideas
in shaping history. The film weaves rarely seen archival
footage of cultural icons such as Gore Vidal, Susan
Sontag, and Norman Mailer; newly filmed interviews
with many of the Review’s current contributors
including Joan Didion, Michael Chabon, and Yasmine
El Rashidi; along with original vérité footage filmed in

Hot Docs 2014 Audience Award Winner
The students of Shanti Bhavan residential school
in Bangalore, India, imagine a future that defies their
“untouchable” caste. Ostracized and oppressed
by virtue of birth alone, the young men and women
of Shanti Bhavan’s Grade 12 class intend to break
a cycle entrenched for generations by becoming the
first Dalit students in India’s history to undertake
the national Indian School Certificate exams. After 13
years of preparation, the students nervously focus
on exam day. As pressure mounts, confidence wavers.
Inflation has made it difficult to attract good teachers
and questions arise as to whether or not the class is
ready for the exam challenge. Some students crack under
the weight of parental expectations, while others fear
bad luck will forever seal their fate. With their futures
hanging in the balance, the students look to one another
for support in this powerful testimonial from those
who refuse to be silenced. Michelle Latimer, Hot Docs

Fanon’s seminal work on the dehumanizing effects of
colonialism, The Wretched of the Earth, Concerning
Violence is both an archive-driven survey of the most
daring moments in Africa’s liberation struggle, and
an exploration of the mechanisms of decolonization.
This unique blend of archive and essay re-introduces
Fanon’s humanist, post-colonial vision through a
cinematic journey that brings the viewer face to face
with the subjects of Fanon’s writings; people for whom
his words were not just rhetoric, but a harsh reality.

THE SEARCH FOR GENERAL TSO
D: Ian Cheney | USA| 2014 | 71 min | STC
Official Selection, Tribeca Film Festival 2014
“Finger-lickin’ good.” – Variety
The Search for General Tso is a mouth-wateringly
entertaining film that travels the globe to unravel
a captivating culinary mystery. General Tso’s
chicken is a staple of Chinese-American cooking,
and a ubiquitous presence on restaurant
menus across the United States. But who was
General Tso and how did his chicken become
emblematic of an entire national cuisine?
Director Ian Cheney journeys from Shanghai
to New York to the American Midwest and
beyond to uncover the origins of this iconic
dish, turning up surprising revelations and
a host of humorous characters along the way.
Told with the verve of a good detective story,
the film is as much about food as it is a tale
of the American immigrant experience.
Director Ian Cheney and producer Jennifer 8.
Lee will be in attendance to introduce the film
and answer questions at select screenings.
Single tickets for The Search for General Tso are $15 (Bloor members: $12) and can be

THE SINGHAMPTON PROJECT
D: Jonathan Staav | Canada, Germany, France | 2014 | 62 min | STC
Renowned Canadian chef Michael Stadtlander teams up
with French landscape artist Jean Paul Ganem to create
seven gardens where they grow, harvest, cook and serve
a seven-course meal over 20 nights for 800 lucky guests.
The Singhampton Project provides a rare look at how hard
it is to raise good food—especially during the driest
summer in 65 years.

TORONTO PREMIERE
Cinema Politica Presents: OUT IN THE NIGHT
D: Blair Doroshwalther | USA | 2014 | 82 min | STC
This suspenseful doc follows the troubling story of four
black lesbians who are charged and convicted of assaulting
an attacker on the streets of New York. The film exposes the
entrenched homophobia and racism in both the U.S. media
and criminal justice systems, and ultimately champions prison
justice and intersectional justice as well as queer rights.
Special guests will participate in a post-screening Q&A.
