Gospel in our lives by our commitment to faithfully love and
serve the Lord and one another.

Change in Schedule In Mailing Of Church Envelopes
Due to many parishioners notifying the office that they are not receiving their church
envelopes on time, the envelope company suggested that we try mailing them on a
monthly basis instead of bi-monthly. This will take affect with the April mailing of
church envelopes. So, please be aware, that you will only receive one month at a time.
Lent & Holy Week Schedules have been mailed to all the parishioners of Divine
Mercy Parish. Please read the schedule carefully & mark your calendars.

, The Narrow Gate
When an ancient city was
fortified, a central gate was built wide
enough for carts and horses to easily pass
through. When the city was threatened,
the gate was secured and no one could go
in or out. Hidden in an unnoticed part of
the wall was an opening so narrow no one
could pass through wearing armor or
carrying weapons. It was often hard to
find and difficult to reach. Jesus used
this image of a city wall to help his
listeners understand the requirements for
passage into Heaven. Many will arrive at
the gates of Heaven, expecting an easy
"in" only to find the door securely shut.
To enter, we have to be fit enough to find
the way and shed the attachments of our
earthly life so that we can freely pass
through the narrow entrance. There will
be surprises on Judgment Day. Some who
think they are entitled to Heaven will be
turned away. Only those who work to
keep spiritually strong will find the way.

Do You Love God Or Fear God More?
Is your relationship with God dominated
by guilt and fear, or by love? Do you
worry how he thinks of you and dread
praying to him? Yet Jesus taught us to
always meet God joyfully in prayer and
worship and to be confident of his love.
Don’t fear God in the wrong way. It is
healthy to be in awe of God as our creator
and creator of the universe. But we
should never be afraid of God becoming
angry every time we make a mistake or
punishing us every time we fail. “But
you, our God, are good and true, slow to
anger, and governing all with mercy”
(Wisdom 15:1). God appreciates honest
effort.
Let God help you change. Most of us
have areas in our lives that need
improvement. If we ask, God will change
them. It isn’t always pleasant but even
transforming change is possible when we
allow God to work in our lives.
Don’t carry guilt. The problem with
guilt is that it can keep us from God.
Instead, use it to take responsibility for
sins, make amends, and start fresh – then
let the guilt go. Catholics are blessed to
have access to the Sacrament of
Reconciliation. Use it often so you can
meet God joyfully in love and peace
which is what he prefers.

Q&A Are We Still Required To
Fast Before Communion?
The Code of Canon Law states: "One
who is to receive the Most Holy
Eucharist is to abstain from any food
or drink, with the exception only of
water and medicine, for at least the
period of one hour before Holy
Communion" (Canon 919, par. 1).
People who are in ill health or who
would put themselves at physical risk
if they abstain from food or drink
should seek the advice of their
physician about whether or not to fast
before Communion.
Technically, chewing gum doesn’t
break the fast but it isn’t necessarily
appropriate during Mass. What do
you do with the gum when it’s time
for Communion? If you swallow it,
you are violating the fast. (And you
should never stick it under the pew!)
Fasting before receiving the Eucharist
reminds us of the great difference
between earthly food, which sustains
only perishable life, and the food of
the Eucharist, which is key for eternal
life. By observing the fast we
approach Communion with a physical
and spiritual hunger.

ustedes necesitan tal ayuda.

OUR LENTEN OBLIGATION
Church law considers every Friday and the season of Lent as penitential days and
times. The practice of penance is a part of our faith and Christian life. When we do
penance, we imitate Jesus, who Himself recommended it as necessary to His
followers, and gave them the example of His prayer and fasting.
The Lenten obligation, as determined for Catholics in the United States by our
bishops, requires that fasting be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The
law of abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.
Who must fast? All Catholics who are between the ages of 18 and 59. The
obligation ceases when one begins his/her 60th year on his/her 59th birthday.
Who must abstain? All Catholics who are 14 years and older.
What does fasting mean? The observance of fasting means that those obliged may
take only one full meal on the day of fast. Two lighter meals (not equal to another
full meal) may be taken to maintain strength according to one's needs.
What does abstinence mean? The law of abstinence forbids the eating of meat,
including poultry. Voluntary abstinence refers to refraining from lawful pleasures in
a spirit of penance. Can anyone be dispensed or excused from fast and/or
abstinence? Individuals for a just cause may be dispensed by their pastor or by a
priest with the faculty to do so. In our Diocese all priests may dispense individuals
who are committed to their pastoral care. Those who are ill or have a similar serious
reason are excused from the observance of fast and abstinence.
Catholics are reminded that they should not lightly excuse themselves from this
obligation. Are there other obligations which we should fulfill? Catholics are
obliged to fulfill what has been called their "Easter Duty." They are required to
receive Holy Communion during the Easter time. In the United States this obligation
can be fulfilled from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (February 22nd
until May 31, 2015). Those conscious of serious sin are reminded of the obligation to
confess their sins once a year. Catholics are also encouraged to make Lent a time of
more intense prayer and to practice almsgiving and other works of charity. Parishes
are encouraged to continue participation in Operation Rice Bowl.
Reconciliation Breathed Into Life By Christ
The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation was born on Easter Sunday Night
when Jesus came through the locked door, breathed on the Apostles and said,
“Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you forgive are forgiven, those sins you retain
are retained.” It began with the breath of Christ. Baptism is a start. Baptism
forgives all sins committed to that point. Sins committed after Baptism can be
forgiven through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. When we sin, we harm ourselves,
someone else, the Church (by diminishing the holiness of the Church), and the
community. It’s necessary to face our sin, confess it, make amends for it, and avoid
its repeat. It’s not just for mortal sins. It’s imperative to seek forgiveness for
mortal sins through this Sacrament but regular Confession is like having a spiritual
check-up. Without it, our sense of sin starts to blur. And that is dangerous.
Contrition is more than regret. God cannot forgive sins without our contrition.
Contrition looks toward the future. It helps us improve as disciples.
Las celebraciones de la Cuaresma Como saben, el Miércoles de Ceniza es el
